Olympiad: Australia's teams have fought valiantly against some very tough opposition in the past week at the Olympiad in Turin, Italy. After 9 rounds our Open team, which was ranked 50th, is in 54th position with 19.5/36. After a heavy loss to Denmark we bounced back to trounce South Africa. Then came a narrow loss to Albania, a narrow win over Luxembourg, another narrow loss to Qatar - whose team has been bolstered by the addition of GM Zhu Chen, who is married to one of Qatar's players. In round 9 we lost narrowly to Egypt.

Our women's team suffered some heavy defeats, losing 3-0 to Slovenia, Vietnam and Kyrgyzstan, but scored wins over Algeria and Guatemala. It is now in 53rd spot.

Women's captain Leonid Sandler writes:

Hello from Torino,
After the worst two rounds in our women's chess Olympic history - zero points out of 6 games - our team recovered, winning against Guatemala, which sounds a very easy opponent, but in reality I can tell you that general level of chess around the world is much higher than, let's say, 10-15 years ago. Again Ngan shined, winning her game with black pieces. Irina outplayed her opponent in very professional manner, and Laura played very actively indeed but her opponent found a series of strong defensive moves and managed to get half a point. Final scored 2.5-0.5 returned us to 50 percent score. I believe that draw for round 10 was a bit unkind to ladies team - we are playing very powerful team of Moldova comprising an IM and 3 WGM. Irina, Arianne and Ngan hopefully will be able to produce a good outcome. Tomorrow will be a rest day before the so-called business end of the Olympiad. There's not a lot I can add to discussions about our men's team. Just a few thoughts. In yesterday's match Alex Wohl shined again, winning his fourth game in a row - fantastic effort. Bravo Alex! Yuan somehow missed excellent chances to win the game, but his performance overall so is very impressive indeed. I did not see Gary's or Nick's games.

That's all at the moment,
From Torino,
Leonid Sandler

Notes
The number 1 selection in each category qualifies for the free food and accommodation that is provided by the host country under FIDE requirements. In the case of the Under 16 Olympiad Team, this benefit applies to the selections numbered 1 to 4 inclusive as the team comprises 4 players.

In the Under 18 Boys, James Obst was the number 1 selection but has opted to play in the Under 16 category in which he was also selected number 1.

The remaining players are listed in order of selection. They are all selected in that the ACF will endorse their entry but they will have to pay their own way if they choose to attend. The ranking order is shown because it is relevant for players in deciding whether to exercise their right of appeal.

The selectors were GM Ian Rogers, GM Darryl Johansen, IM Gary lane, IM Zhao Zong-Yuan and Geoff Saw.

I mention that the ACF Selection Procedures By-law provides for applicants for selection to be excluded if they are considered to be not strong enough. No applicant was excluded for that reason on this occasion.

Letters

Dear Sir/Madam,

My three boys and I love to play chess both on computer and live. I would love to watch a Grand Master Match on line in real time. Do you know which sites would cover some of the big tournaments especially if there was an online commentary as well.

Thanking you

Geoff Keiller

The Olympiad site at http://www.chessolympiad-torino2006.org/ has live games. Otherwise, the ICC at www.chessclub.com or FICS at www.freechess.org both feature grandmaster games, but you'll need to download software to view them. ICC has its own free Blitzin software, whereas for FICS I recommend BabasChess (google it). Hope that helps - Ed
