reminder that GM Zong-Yuan Zhao will compete in the
World Cup which commences on 28 August in Khanty Mansiysk, Russia. His first-round opponent is is GM Evgeny Tomashevsky (Rus), rated 2707.
The tournament consists of two-game knockout matches with rapid tie-breaks
where necessary. See link for more information on the
FIDE site. Invitation from Argentina ACF
President Gary Wastell advises that Gustavo Salaberry, a participant in this year’s Australian
Open in Sydney, has invited an Australian player, FM or untitled, with a
rating between 2200 and 2375 to take part in a tournament to be hosted by the
Club Atletico Banfield,
in Argentina. Gustavo
writes: Last January, I had the
opportunity to visit your wonderful country, together with my Australian
wife. I entered the Australia Chess Open held at The North Sydney Club and it
was a great event. I am very grateful for the treatment and support that the
organizers, the chess authorities and colleagues afforded me. With the aim to increase links
between our countries, using chess as way, I would like to let you know the
following: My club, Club Atlético Banfield is a sports club, founded 115 years ago and is
quite well known, particularly in First Division soccer. It has a long
standing sports history, including a strong chess group. Outstanding players
have come from it, like Miguel Angel Quinteros, Damián Lemos, Fernando
Peralta and Julio Bolbochán. The objective is to provide an
opportunity for an Australian player (FM or untitled) with a rating between
2375 and 2200 to take part in the tournament we are hosting on 29 August to 5
September 2011. The participant will have homestay organised for the length of the tournament and
may stay some days beyond it.
He/she would only have to organise their travel to Buenos Aires and
transport, including from the Airport and to the tournament, will also be
organised. In terms of language, some of us
speak ok English and I am sure we will be able to communicate effectively. Best regards Gustavo Salaberry Links

register interest, please email ghsalaberry@hotmail.com with cc to gwastell@netspace.net.au Australian players overseas As
reported in the previous newsletter, FM Moulthun
Ly, IM Andrew Brown and FM Junta Ikeda played in the Dutch Open in July. Moulthon scored 6/9 and reportedly took his rating above
the 2400 mark which completes the requirements for his IM title; Andrew and
Junta scored 5. See link for the tournament
site or link to figjamchess for reports on the Dutch Open and World
Juniors in Chennai, India. FM
Max Illingworth is touring Hungary and participating in the August First Saturday GM Tournament (from August
6-15), the August Kecskemet GM Tournament (August 20-29), and the September
First Saturday GM Tournament (September 3-12). See link for reports. IM
Alex Wohl scored 6.5/9, half a point behind the
winner, in this year’s Wine Open, or Open International des Vins du Médoc, in
France, an event he has twice won previously. See link for the tournament site or link to doubleroo for reports on this and other events including
the Condom International. First prize in the Wine Open is the winner’s
weight in wine. 2011 Biel tournament GM
Magnus Carlsen (Nor) won this event, a six-player
double round robin from 18 to 29 July in Switzerland, with 19/10 (the 3/1/0
scoring system was used) from GM Alexander Morozevich (Rus) 17. See link for the tournament
site. 2012 Chess Oscar Magnus Carlsen also won the 2010 Chess Oscar, which is an award
voted on by chess journalists. The Oscar has been presented annually since
1967 when it was won by GM Bent Larsen (Den), with a break from 1989 to 1994.
See link for a report on chessvibes. 2011 Sparkassen
Chess Meeting, Dortmund This
event in Germany (21 to 31 July), another six-player double round, was won by
GM Vladimir Kramnik (Rus)
with 7/10 from Le Quang Liem
(Vie) 5.5. See link for the tournament site. 2011 India Global Internet Speed
Chess Tournament Grassroots
Chess Promotions (India) is running this tournament in four rating groups on
20-21 and 27-28 August. First prize in the Open is
60,000Rp (about $Aus1,280) and in the other groups
$45,000Rp plus other prizes down to tenth in every section. See link for the tournament
site. 2011 British Chess Championship and
Fashion Awards The
British Chess Championship in Sheffield was overshadowed by a debate about a
T-shirt which ECF President CJ de Mooi was
intending to wear for the prize ceremony, though he ultimately didn’t
present the prizes. See
link for a report in the Guardian.
Apparently GM Michael Adams won the event in a rapid tie-break match against
GM Nigel Short; frequent Australian visitor GM Gawain Jones was equal third. 2011 Mind Sports Olympiad This
tournament, now up to its fifteenth edition, will be held at the University
of London from 20 to 29 August. The schedule
includes chess variants such as transfer, shuffle chess and Diving Chess, in
which players are required to stay under water while deciding on their moves,
as well as problem solving. Presumably normal chess is also contested though
this is not entirely obvious. See link for further
information. |
Previous
editions of the newsletter featured a request by John Roycroft
for information on a chess set. The message is repeated below. John has
kindly given ACF News permission to reproduce a recent article of his which
appeared in Chess Life (USA): Reward
(negotiable!) to whoever first puts me in direct contact with the present
owner of a 100-year-old complete chess set, Staunton pattern, exceptionally
large, magnificent, weighted, and a joy to heft. The set (without board) has
an astonishing pedigree/provenance -- two keywords: CUMMINS and JACKSON.
The owner (m. or f.) purchased it privately in NW London UK (Harrow area)
about 2007 and subsequently emigrated to Australia, presumably to a major
town. (S)he may not play chess, but will show the
set. There may be a (classical?) musical connection, so please circulate this
among all your musical acquaintances. The two keywords are the vital
attention grabbers! Contact: John ROYCROFT (googlable on ROYCROFT CHESS) roycroft@btinternet.com John Roycroft |
