[incorporates NZ Championship] link (Date

Championships were held in the City of Ekurhuleni in Gauteng, South Africa
from 25 June to 4 July. GMs Gawain Jones and Nigel Short (both Eng) tied for
first on 9.5/11, with Jones taking the title on tie-break. Australia was
represented by GM David Smerdon who came third with 9, and Thomas Feng and
Tristan Stevens both 7. Rowan and Kevin
Willathgamuwa played in the B section, scoring 8 and 7.5/11 respectively.
See link for the tournament site. 2011 World Open FM Junta Ikeda and FM Moulthun
Ly participated in the World Open, a large Swiss event in Philadelphia, USA
from 28 June to 4 July, scoring 5 (=28th) and 4.5/9 (=39th)
respectively. Prior to this event they also played in the Philadelphia
International where they both scored 5.5/9, finishing equal fourth. GM Gata
Kamsky (USA) and GM Michael Adams (Eng) tied for first in the World Open. See link for the tournament
site. Oceania Titles In addition to the Australian
players’ titles already reported in ACF News (IM Andrew Brown, FM
Moulthun Ly, FM Gareth Oliver, WIM Emma Guo and WFM Megan Setiabudi), FIDE
has approved the title of WFM to Nicole Tsoi (NZ) following the Zonal in
Rotorua this year. Swiss Juniors Former Australian
Junior Champion under 8(2008) and under 10(2010) Peter Wallmueller just won
Swiss under 12 Championship! Leonid Sandler French cheating case A court in Verailles, France has
suspended sanctions against GM Sebastien Feller and GM Arnaud Hauchard. The
two, along with IM Cyril Marzolo, had been accused by the French Chess
Federation of cheating in the 2010 Olympiad in Russia. A Disciplinary Committee
of the Federation had imposed suspensions which were then increased by an
Appeals Committee to which they had appealed. The court decision is not a
dismissal of the decision but a suspension of the sanctions pending a court
ruling on the case, and enables the players to continue playing in the
meantime. FIDE itself appears to have made no ruling on the issue - GM Feller
qualified to play in the next World Cup by virtue of his result in the recent
European Championship. See link for a report on chessvibes. Rybka disqualified Another computer cheating case
– but this time by a computer program rather than with one. The International Computer Games Association (ICGA) has
disqualified and banned Rybka and its programmer Vasik Rajlich from the World
Computer Chess Championships for the four years 2007 to 2010 and demanded
that the program’s medals and prizes be returned. ICGA alleges that Rybka appropriated part of two other programs,
Crafty and Fruit, without acknowledgement, in violation of the rules of the
tournament. At this
stage there appears to be no response on the Rybka page – see link; also see link for a report on chessvibes or link for the ICGA page. The last two links include technical
documentation used in reaching the verdict. |
The July
FIDE ratings were released earlier this month. The leading Australians
(active players only) are shown in the next column. Magnus
Carlsen (Nor) has regained top spot with 2821 followed by World Champion
Viswanathan Anand (Ind) 2817, Levon Aronian (Arm) 2805 and Sergey Karjakin
(Rus) 2788. Boris Gelfand (Isr), who will play Anand for the world title in
2012, has moved to number 12 on 2746. A
rating of 2764 is necessary to be in the top ten, and 2649 for the top
hundred. Australia’s top player, GM Zong-Yuan Zhao, at 2570 is number
339. See here for the FIDE ratings page. |
