No. 305, February 9, 2005
In this issue:
Oceania Zonal:
IMs Gary Lane and Irina Berezina-Feldman have qualified for the World Championship knock-out tournament by
winning the Oceania Zonal Tournaments (open and women's) in Waipuna, New Zealand.
Both were undefeated in the keenly contested events that featured large numbers of Aussies.
And six new titles should be awarded as a result of the competition:
IM: Paul Garbett (NZ)
The open had 60 players including 3 rated above 2400.
Some facts and figures on the Zonal organisation from Peter Parr's SMH column: "There are 17 countries in zone 3.2 (Asia) with 43 players rated above
2450 and 3 open qualifying places. Two players qualify from Zone 3.2a
(13 countries with 41 players above 2450) and one player qualifies from
the sub-zone 3.2b (Oceania) with 4 countries (AUS, NZL, FIJ, PNG) and 2
players above 2450 (Rogers world no.150 and Johansen world no.898).Lane
2439 is ranked 1308. There are 1160 players rated above 2450 (216 from
Russia)."
The games were broadcast live via the web page at http://www.auschess.org.au/oceania/zonal/tfd.htm. Further information, pairings, results and archived games are available from the main site at
http://www.globalchessenterprises.co.nz/. Games can also be seen in a single file at NetChessNews

Newcastle Open: A 7-round Swiss held on the February 5-6 weekend at the Panthers Club in Newcastle, NSW.
The NSWCA January Weekender had a record attendance of 77 players. The 7 round event resulted in a triple tie for first place between FM Erasmus Gerigk (GER
2288), Pedroy Tidoy (PHI 2226) and Ronald Yu 2092 each scoring
6/7. Gerigk won his first six games but lost to Tidoy in the final
round. Tomek Rej, Jason Hu and Edgar Bautista were 4th - 6th equal with
5.5 points.
Lloyd Fell (aged 86!) and Adrian Rose tied for first place
with 6/7 in the 39 player Summer Open Tournament at St. George Leagues
Club.
The ACF Council has unanimously approved some changes to the NECG junior chess squad arrangements. NECG (National Economics Consulting Group) generously sponsors chess training camps for top juniors. The changes are designed to finetune the training schedules.
Australian Championships 2005/2006 - Junior Championships 2006 - Call for Bids
In April 2004 the ACF Council called for bids for the Australian
Championships 2005/2006 and associated events, the Australian Junior
Championships 2006 and the Australian Schools Teams Championships 2005.
The only bid received was from the NSWCA/NSWJCL for the Australian Schools
Teams Championships 2005. That bid was accepted at the ACF Council meeting
on 11 October 2004.
This leaves the other events without a formal bid. I am anxious to ensure
that we have the situation clarified and any bids in a state suitable for
acceptance at the next ACF Council meeting to be held at Easter. By then
there will be only 9 months' lead time for the events.
The purpose of this notice is to call formally (again) for bids for the
Australian Championship 2005/2006 and/or the Australian Junior Championships
2006.
Bids are to be submitted in writing (includes email) by 5pm on Thursday 10
March 2005 to Jey Hoole, ACF Secretary
A form of application (in either PDF or Word format) that covers the matters
required by the ACF By-laws to be addressed is available by e-mail from me.
Should not all the required information be available by the deadline, as
much as is available should be supplied.
If any bid is submitted on the basis of the ACF running the event direct,
rather than granting its running upon application by a State Association,
attention is drawn to By-law 14 of the By-laws for ACF Tournaments which
provides that "the Council shall determine the State where a tournament will
be held with the approval of the State Association of that State". Any such
application should also give particulars of the proposed organising
committee as it is not to be assumed that the ACF would undertake that task.

We had quite a response to Joe Cummins' letter last week. Joe wrote: "I used to know an
ingenious chess problem, there are only a few pieces and the main feature
was that white has to mate in four moves. The mate is effected with white's
(only?) remaining man, a mere pawn ... Do you know the position/solution?" Here are the answers - Ed
....
Hi Paul,
Re letter from Joe Cummins re mate in 4 with one pawn:
Could Joe be recollecting the Mate in 5 position by W. Hagemann in 1939 in which White starts as Goliath and ends as David?
Meanwhile keep up the great work with the newsletter.
Kind regards,
Hi Paul,
I know that puzzle!!!
I goes something like .....
Answer: 1.Ra4+!! bxa4+ 2.Kc4 b5+ 3.Kc5 b4 4.axb4 mate

Paul,
Re Joe Cummins letter in bulletin 304. This may be the postion that Joe
has in mind:
White: K on g2, R on b3, P on h2
I found this position in "Winning Chess Tactics Illustrated" by I.A.
Horowitz. It is more likely to be a composed position than from an actual
game, however Horowitz does not quote a source.
Best Regards
