Letters

Hi Paul,

Firstly, let me say how much I appreciate all the work you put into the newsletter. It's certainly a highlight of my week when I receive it.

I read the article about Anand in the SMH. It appears to be an article by Peter Roebuck, not Peter Fitzsimmons, and based on an interview by another journalist. Perhaps you should contact Peter Roebuck and ask him to publicize chess activities, as he certainly seems to be interested in chess!

Finally, can you tell me when the next Australian Open/Championship is taking place? Same time this year, or is it every 2 years? I was unable to attend at Mt Buller, but hope to play next time.

Keep up the great work

Regards,
David Creedon

Thanks David. The "closed" and "open" Australian Championships are held in alternate years - so since 2005 had the "open", 2006 will be a "closed" championship. (Please note that there are various ratings-based divisions to accommodate players of all skill levels.) - PaulB

Topalov, Leko lead Corus supertournament: Official Site | View games - A | B games | C games | Rounds 1-2 annotated

Scores after 9 rounds: Topalov, Leko 6.0; Adams, Anand 5.5; Kramnik 5.0; Grischuk, Ponomariov, Bruzon 4.5; Van Wely, Polgar, Svidler, Short 4.0; Morozevich 3.0; Sokolov 2.5.

B scores after 9 rounds: Mamedyarov 7.0; Karjakin 6.5; Cheparinov, Stellwagen 5.5; Smeets, Carlsen 5.0; P.H. Nielsen, Stefanova, Onischuk 4.5; Kosteniuk 4.0; Nikolic, Ramirez 3.0; Nijboer, Ernst 2.5.

C scores after 9 rounds: Alekseev, L'Ami, Georgiev 7.0; Korotylev, Zhukova 6.5; Jonkman 4.5; Bosboom, Bosboom-Lanchava 4.0; Muhren, Spoelman, Negi 3.5; Mamedjarova 2.5; Pliester 2.0; Wempe 1.5.

Judit Polgar, returning to chess after having a baby last year, beat Peter Svidler in round 1 after he allowed his bishop to become trapped. Topalov accepted Ponomariov's pawn sacrifices and won the ending. In the B tournament, Kosteniuk won a great game against Onischuk, beginning with a striking sacrificial attack and ending with rook and bishop triumphing over rook (theoretically drawn, but difficult to draw in practice).

Bulgaria's Veselin Topalov crushed world champion Vladimir Kramnik in just 20 moves in round 2. Kramnik snatched a pawn early, but then found himself tied in knots as he tried to save his embattled queen. In other surprises, Leko beat world No 2 Anand. Adams beat Morozevich while Ponomariov beat Polgar.

Round 3 saw Leko beat Svidler, while Sokolov lost to Ponomariov, and Morozevich fell to Grischuk. Polgar and Kramnik had an exciting draw.

Adams scored an impressive positional win over Topalov in round 4, as Kramnik caught Sokolov in a mating net and Svidler was lucky to escape against Anand. Morozevich lost again, this time to Short.

Morozevich slumped to 0.5/5 after losing to Anand in round 5, while Bruzon beat Short to move into joint third position and other games were drawn.

And Morozevich blundered to lose to Bruzon as Kramnik beat Svidler, Anand beat Ponomariov and Topalov beat Short in round 6.

In round 7 Anand beat Bruzon to join the leaders, while Svidler beat Van Wely. In the B tournament, Mamedyarov reached 6/7.

A fine win over Bruzon in round 8 propelled Topalov into the sole lead. Short beat Sokolov, while Morozevich, who has suffered appalling form, scored his first win - over Polgar.

Topalov and Leko shared the lead after Topalov and Anand made a quick draw in round 9 while Leko caught up by beating Nigel Short. Morozevich seemed to have receovered form, scoring his second win, this time over Sokolov, and Svidler beat Grischuk.

This tournament in Wijk Aan Zee, The Netherlands, is probably the strongest event of the year. Only Kasparov is missing from the line-up, which includes Anand, Topalov, Kramnik, Leko, Morozevich, Adams, Svidler, Polgar, Grischuk, Ponomariov, Sokolov, Van Wely, Short and Bruzon. It's a Category 19 event with an average rating of 2721.

Montreal: Leading final scores after 7 rounds: Jakovenko 6.5; Mikhalevski 4.5; Hauchard, Nataf 4.0; Fedorowicz, Perelshteyn, Roussel-Roozmon 3.5; Lawson 2.5; Antonio 2.0; Hebert 1.0. Site | View games

Hamarat versus The World: ICCF World Champion Tunc Hamarat - a player who has never lost a single game with White - has challenged the "Rest of the World" to a friendly 2-game match. He will have White in both games.
The games (one started with 1.e4 and one with 1.d4) will be played on the ICCF Webserver and started on 10th February 2005 with the rule "10 moves/70 days".
The players on the "Rest of the World" team will vote on each move. The move receiving the most votes will be selected. Should 2 or more moves receive the same number of votes, the "Rest of the World" will be given 2 more voting days to decide between the tied moves.
Participation in this event is open to all players who pay an entry fee of 5 EUR or $7.00 US dollars via their National CC Federation or the ICCF Direct Entry (DE) option.
All fees collected will be transferred to the ICCF Development Fund. The money will be used primarily for development and system support of the ICCF WebChess Server.
It will be possible to join the "Rest of the World" team at any stage of the game.
The games may be seen "live" by all players and other observers at www.iccf-webchess.com Each player who voted for the selected move will receive 1 point per move. The player(s) with the most points at the end of the games will receive an ICCF Gold Book. The list of all entrants will be published on the ICCF webpage. - M. Samraoui
