Warp wins National Computer Chess Championships:
The 2004 Australasian National Computer Chess Championships (NC3 for short) took place on July 20 as part of the Australian National University Chess Festival. This event has been run since 1998 and has provided the impetus for the development of a number of strong chess programs in Australia and New Zealand.
The event was held online - hosted on chess.tridgell.net - a chess server maintained by Andrew Tridgell which you can connect to it using any FICS complient client (such as Xboard) via port 5000.
Warp (created by Peter McKenzie of NZ) successfully defended its title as the strongest chess playing program in Oceania, but only after a 3 way blitz playoff against Desperado (David Blackman, Qld) and Knightcap (Andrew Tridgell, ACT).

Australian Clubs Teams Championships: This is proceeding at Caloundra, Sunshine Coast from Monday to Friday 27 Sept to 1 Oct. The event is being held at the Oasis Resort. Three bedroom villas sleeping 7 cost only $675 for 5 nights. That’s around $100 per person! And some of the Virgin/Jetstar prices are pretty good as well. The entry fee is $400 per team of 8 (min 3 females), that is only $50 per player for a week long tournament. More teams are most welcome. Perhaps a good opportunity for uni students? World News:
Fischer arrested, seeks political asylum: Bobby Fischer, via his Japanese website, has declared himself a political prisoner and is seeking asylum in a "friendly third country". He also claims to have been 'viciously attacked, brutalised, seriously injured and very nearly killed' during his arrest. Fischer was detained by Japanese immigration officials while trying to catch a plane to the Philippines. He may now be deported to the US, where he faces charges relating to a $US3.5 million match with Boris Spassky held in war-torn Yugoslavia in 1992, in breach of UN sanctions and a US embargo. If convicted he could face fines of $US50,000 and up to 10 years in jail.
