The CVCC was once again successfully held at the Bendigo Chess Club with a
good turn-up of both old and new faces. Unfortunately a few regulars were missing
including Bas van Riel and the 2002 champ Stewart Booth. Stewart was unfortunately
laid up in hospital which is just about what it takes to stop him winning the event.
As far as I know none of us had anything to do with him being there and all
participants wish him a speedy recovery. In Stewart's absence Nigel Barrow
took first prize with a very solid performance, not dropping one game. In fact
Nigel is showing a Petrosianesque ability to avoid loss these days which should
inspire us all to lift our game. A loss to Jon Daivis in round 3 proved costly for
Scott Stewart who came clear second with 4.5. He played with his usual tactical
alertness as he put paid to Patrick Cook's efforts to join the leaders in the last
round. Another to fall on his own sword was Leigh Healey who could only draw
a Q vs K+P endgame against Ali Al-Amein (who played a touch above his rating
of 1350!) in spite of the assembled kibitzers telepathically shouting the winning move.
Jing Jia once again impressed all and will no doubt star in much bigger arenas
in the years to come. Actually, nearly all, Bill Stokie found the youthful ebullience
a little hard to take as he went down to Jing in round 2. Of the others David
Lumsden made a convincing return to chess with a solid 4/6 and will doubtless
improve as the rust falls away. As to the efforts of the top seed...one of the
advantages of writing the tournament notes is that you can ignore your own
mediocrity, so I will.

Bendigo Chess Club site
which has more information about the tournament.
We tried a faster time limit than normal (G60) and cutting breaks between
some rounds to produce an event similar to the 2-day 7-game format often
used in other states. A straw poll taken before round 7 showed that most of
the juniors loved the format, while most of the adults thought it had its
place, but alongside events with longer time limits. Certainly time
pressure was a factor in a large number of games, with numerous losses on
time and Article 10.2 rearing its head a few times (indeed some 10.2 claims
were so optimistic that they were actually rejected outright). Some very
complex positions clearly couldn't be done justice in a G60 game but
nonetheless there was plenty of good chess played.
An Accelerated Swiss was used due to the very wide range of player strengths
through the field. With acceleration there were several good games in round
1 but no actual upsets. Swiss Perfect was used, but overridden in round 2
because of accelerated pairings configuration issues and again in round 6
because of the common B3/C13 prioritisation problem.
No-one was surprised that Lim Yee Weng ran away with the event, 1.5 points
up before taking a last-round draw with Glen Gibbs. Resistance to the top
seed varied in quality with Nigel Frame and Chadwick causing trouble
(before rushing a drawn rook ending and missing an unclear tactic in time
trouble respectively) but Bonham and Slidizunas both losing quickly. Many
games between the top locals were drawn, especially those involving Glen
Gibbs, who despite being no fan of the faster time control managed a very
dignified +3=4-0.
The ratings divisions were changed to U1600 and U1400 due to entry numbers.
Milutin Ivkovic won the former and Joe Basic won the latter with another
excellent performance including 2.5/3 against players from the division
above. The junior prize went down to the wire after the favourite Thomas
Hendry got massively swindled while several pieces up against Billy Shaw in
round 6. Billy's luck ran out when the Swiss system sent him to board 2,
and a last-round win for Thomas saw Thomas win the prize by half a Bucholz
point.
6.5 Lim Yee Weng (FIDE 2274)
C Shaw received a 1-point bye, M Briant received a half-point bye.
- Kevin Bonham.
We are publishing these changes no so that players can see the effect plus
be able to see the change between these and the December 2003 ratings that
will be realeased by the end of November.
Note the following:
a) No additional tournaments have been processed since the September 2003
ratings.
Now overall the details are:
203 ACT players(or players who used to be ACT players) had their ratings
changed. Another 24 who have yet to have a published rating had their
internal rating changed.
74 Gold Coast players had their ratings changed. One other player had their
internal rating changed.
Another 1413 players had their ratings changed. Another 276 had their
internal ratings changed.
Of these 1690 players with published ratings only 96 had their ratings
decrease.
The reason these 96 had a decrase was due either to correction of a
previouly reported incorrect result or due to the change in the handling of
players rated over 2200.
Of these 96 there were 54 who changed by less than 5 points, another 18 by
less than 10 points. Only 14 are by more than 20 points.
32 of the 96 were rated above 2200 of which 10 changed by more than 20
points . For those rated below 2200 only 6 went down by more than 10
points.
Changes were also made to rapid ratings.
These ratings come into effect from November 1st.
The files report.zip and reprap.zip conatin updated reports. Note there are
no bussiest or topimp lists are these are irrlevant under the
circumstances.
Regards,
Bill Gletsos
Ratings Officer
Meanwhile, please enjoy the reviews by India's Professor Nagesh Havanur and Queenslander Bruce Littleboy.

Report by Chris BradleyHobart November Weekender
Tasmania:
Another bumper field of 30 players (Neville Ledger entered but was unable to
play) including 11 enthusiastic juniors was another strong sign that
Tasmanian chess is in at least decent shape.

1.5 Tim Hooks (UNR), Megan Briant (UNR)Ratings revamped
In line with an ACF Council motion made last year we have finally made the
corrections to the ratings for the ACT junior problem.
b) The changes effect ACT adults as well as juniors.
c) Changes also were made for members of the Gold Coast chess club.
d) All players outside of these areas whose ratings were effected were
changed even if the change was only 1 point.
e) No players rating based on the above was reduced.
f) The modification we implmented in September that affected players rated
over 2200 has been changed as further study showed we were too generous.
The new implmentation is statistically better than our original
implementation. This change caused some players ratings to increase and
some players ratings to decrease.Book reviews

Solution next week
Last Week's Solution:
Mate in 2 - Andy Sag
Solution: 1.Re5 (Threat 2.Nd3) 1 dc 2.Qf6 1 de 2.Qh6 1 Kxe5 2.Qxd6 1 Nc1 2.Bg3 1 Bxe5 2.Bd2 Comments: Economical setting with sacrificial "give & take" key (allows flight-capture Kxe5 in exchange for Kg5). Threat and 5 defensive variations. Technically a "Meredith" (less than 12 pieces).
Contributions are most welcome to this section!
As always we have done best in the younger age groups, where natural talent
can make up for a lot!
Raymond finished = 6th, but the bizarre second countback system saw him
pushed into 7th place by a boy he beat. A bit of hassling looks like seeing
him get a trophy. (medals for top 3 and trophies for 4, 5 and 6)
The place is now going wild, as a 1,000 children let off steam. 11 rounds without
a rest day has been grueling and saw a bit of fading in the last rounds.
Thank-you to our hard working coaches - Ian Rogers, Manuel Weeks and
Kostas Moutossis. Although Ian was a private coach, he also put in a large
amount of extra time helping the team generally.
Also thanks to Cathy Rogers - she was working as an arbiter and it was good to
have a friendly person inside.
The Greeks have been very friendly and we are looking forward to 2004 in
Heraklion in Crete.
Here the new junior champion dispatches two of his major rivals in fine style:
{Not the usual ...e5 treatment. Black goes for long diagonal pressure}
9.d5 Na6 10.Qd2 Re8
{Preparing to open the e-file}
11.h3 Bxf3 12.Bxf3
{White has the two bishops, but Bf3's not so flash with all those
pawns on white squares}
12...Nc7 13.Be2 a6 14.a4 e6
15.Rab1 exd5 16.exd5 Qh4!?
{An oomphy move by the queen, since it's difficult to chase away. Bg5
is met by ...Bxc3! and ...Rxe2!!}
17.Bg4!?
{But now Bg5 is a real threat}
( 17.Bg5 Bxc3! 18.bxc3 Rxe2! 19.Qxe2 Qxg5 20.Rxb7 Rc8 {and Black has
two pieces for the rook} )

kingside vulnerable}
18.Qxe3

18...Bd4 19.Qd2 f5 20.Be2 Ne5 21.b4
{White's only active possibility}
21...Ne8 22.a5?!

clear-cut attack happening on the other side. Better bxc5 immediately}

for white}

through to g4 and there's not much to be done. One possibility is }

Finally it is over and a fairly happy team. Definitely this is one of the better
performing teams in recent years - 10 children with 50% or better out of the
19 team members. Our overall % for the tournament was 48.5%.
All the kids are eager to play again next year (maybe not the parents!).

Earlier, Kramnik continued his superb form with a 2-0 demolition of Grischuk, who had no answer to the World Champion's solid positional play in both games. Anand and Svidler drew their two games, but the Indian won the blitz playoff, setting the stage for a last-round showdown with Kramnik.
At the start of the playoffs Kramnik beat Polgar and Anand triumphed over Ponomariov in the first knockout matches. Grischuk and Bacrot drew their two games but the Russian won a blitz play-off 2-0, and Svidler beat Topalov.
