Barber wins WA Championships

Haydn Barber (2108) has won the WA state championships with 7.5/9.
Equal second were Boyd McCamon (2152) and Adam Haasse (2096)
6.5/9. 26 players took part.

Haydn Barber-Adam Haasse

Round 5

1.f4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.g3 Bg4 4.Bg2 Bxf3 5.Bxf3 Nbd7 6.c4 c6

Interesting is 6. ... e5. White can choose between the risky 7. cxd5 exf4 8. gxf4 and 7. d3 with unclear play.

7. cxd5 cxd5 8. O-O e6 9. d3 Bc5+ 10.Kh1 h5?

Aggressive and enticing, but this is the start of Black's problems. Simply O-O looks fine.

11.e4 dxe4 12.dxe4 e5 13.Nc3 h4?! 14.g4 g6 15.f5 Bd4 16.Nb5 Qb6 17.Nxd4 Qxd4

Possible is 17. ... exd4 18. Bf4 g5!? 19. Bxg5 Ne5 with some play for the lost material.

18. Qe2 Rc8 19.Bg5

Black's position does not look too bad but I believed that a patient build-up by White would eventually expose his inherent weaknesses. I was certainly not prepared to jump into some murky variation like 19. Rd1 Qb4 20. g5 Nh5 21. Bg4 Ng3+ 22. hxg3 hxg3+ 23. Kg1 Rxc1 or Rh2 followed by Rcc2.

19....Rc6 20.Rfd1 Qb6 21.Rd2 O-O 22.Bxh4 Rfc8 23.Rad1 Nc5 24.g5 Nh7 25.Qe3!

Heading for a3 and e7 to attack Black's back rank.

25....Na4?!

After 25...Nf8, White is a pawn up and has the 2 bishops but, maybe, no quick finish although 26. Bg3 followed by h4-h5 may be hard to meet.

26.Qa3 Nc5 27.b4 Na6

If 27. ... Nd7 28. Rxd7 Rc3 29. Qa5 Qxa5 30. bxa5 Rxf3 31. Rd8+ Rxd8 32.Rxd8+ Nf8 33. f6 and White will eventually manoeuvre his bishop to the a3-f8 diagonal and win the knight on f8.

28.b5! Rc3 29.Qe7 Rc1 30.Bf2 Rxd1+ 31.Bxd1 Qxb5

Other tries: a) 31. ... Nc5 32. Bb3 Qc7 33. Bxc5 Qxc5 34. Rd8+ wins
b) 31. ... Qc7 32. Rd7 Qc4 33. fxg6 Qf1+ 34. Bg1 Nf8 35. gxf7+ Kh7 36.Bg4 wins
c) 31. ... Qa5 32. Rd7 Qxa2 33. fxg6 Nf8 34. gxf7+ Kh7 35. Qf6 wins.
d) 31. ... Qa5 32. Rd7 Qxa2 33. fxg6 Qxf2 34. gxf7+ Kh8 35. f8=Q+ Qxf8 36. Qxh7#
In all these lines, the White bishops combine to keep Black at bay just long enough.

32.fxg6 Qf1+ 33.Bg1 Nf8 34.Rf2

Finally, the Black King falls into the mincer!

34....Qc4 35.gxf7+ Kh7 36.g6+ Kh6

It does not help to play 36. ... Nxg6, but it does give White the chance to under-promote:

37. f8=N+ Kh6 38. Qh7+ Kg5 39. Qxg6+ Kh4 40. Qg3#

37.Qh4+Kxg6 38. Rf6+

Here, Black resigned in view of Qh6# (Notes by Hadyn Barber)

Thanks to Rob Maris for the info.

Bologan triumphs in Dortmund

Germany: Rank outsider Viorel Bologan, a strong Moldovian grandmaster,
pulled off one of the upsets of the year by winning the super-strong
Dortmund event ahead of Kramnik, Leko, Anand, Bologan, Naiditsch and
Radjabov in a double round robin. Bologan lost just one game and
dominated throughout. Meanwhile, Teimour Radjabov - one the world's
youngest GM - also excelled by adding the scalp of Anand to his expanding
collection. The Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting also featured opens
and other activities, including a match between Baramidze and Belikov.

An innovation. White is unworried about ...g4 because of 15.Qxh6 gxf3 16.Rxe6+!! fxe6 17.Qxe6+ Kf8 18.Bh6+ Rg7 19.Bg6

14...Bf8 15. Qf5 Bg7 16. h4 Kf8 17. Qh3 Rh8 18. hxg5 hxg5 19. Qg4 c5 20. Bxg5 cxd4 21. Rad1 Bb7 22. Rxe6!!

18. Nxg5 d4 19. exd4 cxd4 20. cxd4 h6 21. Ne4 Rg8 22. Nd6 Nf6!?

A bolt from the blue! 21...Kxg6 is met by 22.Bxg5!! hxg5 23.Qxg5+ Kh7 24.Qh4+ or 22...Kh7 23.Bxf6! Bxf6 24.Qg6+ Kh8 25.Qxh6+ Rh7 26.Qxf8#. Meanwhile, white wins the exchange because of the dual threats of Nxf8 and Ne5 ... but it's not enough to win the game!

21...Nh5!? 22. Nxf8+ Rxf8 23. Qh3 Kg6 24. Raf1 d4! 25. Bd2 Bd6 26. Rg4 Bf4 27. Bxf4 Nxf4

Black has a great knight and the white rooks have little scope.

28. Qg3 e5 29. h4 Qe6!? 30. b3

I suppose the answer to 30.hxg5 is 30...h5!? keeping the position closed on the kingside eg 31.Rh4 Qxa2 with good counterplay, rather than the hyper-adventurous 30...hxg5!??! (or 30...Rh8!?) opening the g-file for white - and the h-file for Black, eg 30.hxg5 hxg5 31.Rxg5+ Kf7!? 32.Rg7+ Ke8 33.Re1!? (defending against 33...Rh8+ and Ne2+) Rh8+ 34.Qg5 Rxf3!? or 33.Qh4 Ng6!?

30...b5! 31. a3 Rh8 32. Qh2 Rf8 33. Qg3 Rh8 34. Rxf4!? exf4 35. Qh2 c4 36. Rg1 Rc8 37. bxc4 1/2-1/2

Great defence by Black.

Letters

Hi!
My name is Olimpiu Urcan, a 26 year old chess master from Romania and chess
historian. Also a chess columnist for Correspondence Chess News.
Can you help me with the email add of some chess historian from Australia? I
am doing some research on Singapore chess history and I would need an
Australian historian's assistance in some cases.
Thanks a lot.

With consideration,

Hi Paul
Just a query about the game Johansen - Lojanica from ANU Open in bulletin 228.

I'm not sure if anyone has pointed this out already, but after the
reported move 49 Rxa4?? black could have mated in one by 49...Qxg3. I
find it hard to believe both players would have missed this so I suspect
a clerical error in the bulletin, (unless I've replayed the game
incorrectly.)

It's also true as pointed out in the bulletin that 57...Qf3+ would have
won quickly for black, as would 61...c2, but those oversights are more
explicable than two good players missing mate in one.

No doubt the true story will emerge from someone who saw what happened.
Did Johansen fall victim to a guillotine finish or something?

Regards, Guy West.
