Many players agree it is now one of the top Australian weekenders, with a strong social emphasis fueling the fun, exciting atmosphere. IM Stephen Solomon in red hot form from his Masters performance, won with 6.5/7 ahead of favourite GM Darryl Johansen (6/7, 2nd), despite some titatnic struggles. GM Johansen's loss to Victorian Milenko Lojanica allowed Solomon to take the lead, despite being a piece for a pawn down to local Bob Cowley, and drawing to Mehmedalija Disdarevic. Equal 3rd on 5.5/7 were Cowley, Srbo Zaric, Aaron Guthrie and Tristan Stevens. Further details at www.unichess.org - Andrew Saint Place Name Feder Rtg Loc Club Score M-Buch. Buch. Progr. LAJOS STEINER CENTENARY TOURNAMENT The Lajos Steiner Centenary Tournament was due to be held at Rose Bay RSL club on the weekend, but a venue booking problem forced the event to be postponed. Meanwhile, Peter Parr has drawn attention to the following game: "Steiner (1903-1975) competed in 7 Australian Championship tournaments (1936-1959) finishing outright first 5 times. He was the strongest ever migrant chess player to live in Australia. Steiner defeated four of the best players in the world (Nimzovich, Bogoljubow, Tartakower and Reti) at the Berlin tournament of 1928.
