The RSL Club served the purpose very nicely and the event attracted a field of 85 players with an age range from 7 years to 92 years of age! Of the 85 players there were 27 Juniors and 14 Cadets. We were very pleased to have the services of Anastasiya Sorokina as our DOP. From a personal point of view I have proved to myself it is not possible to play and organise at the same time. However, I was very successful in giving upset prizes (at my expense) and bonus rating points to several juniors! The venue suited many of the younger players, who after beating me, were able to spend some time in the "Little Diggers Club" entertaining themselves with a variety of activities. Many thanks to Graeme Gardiner for his support and efforts in bringing a large Gold Coast contingent to our event. The WIN Television news team arrived at a most opportunistic time as Casey Barnard (Junior - 1669) had a 6th round win over IM Stephen Solomon (2344) in the biggest upset of the Tournament. There was a swag of prizes on offer including Open 1st to 4th; 1st and 2nd in 4 rating groups; best Veteran over 60; best Veteran over 70; best Suncoast player; best Unrated; best Female; best Junior; best Cadet; plus upset prizes and random draw prizes after the last round. Ian Rogers took out the top prize with 6.5 points (drawing with Stephen Solomon in round 5) 1st Ian Rogers (6.5) 2nd Erik Teichmann & Jacob Edwards (6) 4th Stephen Solomon; Jonathan Humphrey; Casey Barnard (5.5) For a full list of results and prizes check the Suncoast Club website at http://www.sunchess.aunz.org - Bob Goodwin GRAND PRIX PROGRESS SCORES Open Division Leading scores (total 80 players) 1 Rogers, Ian NSW 2581 76 2 Solomon, Stephen Qld 2344 44 3 Lane, Gary W NSW 2400 27.5 4 Cowley, Bob SA 2088 21 5 Stead, Kerry NSW 1981 21 6 Zaric, Srbo SA 2201 21 7 Teichmann, Erik Vic 2291 19.5 8 Edwards, Jacob A Qld 1851 18 9 Seberry, Ralph 2237 16.8 10 Sandler, Leonid Vic 2345 16 Under 2000 Division Leading Scores (total 86 players) 1 Edwards, Jacob A Qld 1851 32 2 Castor, David NSW 1788 24.92 3 Nemeth, John Vic 1939 20 4 Harp, Joel NSW 1908 19.33 5 Lubarsky, Kostia NSW 1644 19.33 6 Kildisas, Victor Vic 1786 16.75 7 Van Renen, Mike NSW 1932 16 8 Stead, Kerry NSW 1981 16 9 Yu, Ronald NSW 1774 16 Under 1600 Division Leading Scores (total 91 players) 1 Keuning, Anthony NSW 1517 28.33 2 Brown, Phillip NSW 1537 22.5 3 Ferris, Shaun Vic 1534 21.4 4 Hvistendahl, Robert Qld 1505 20.05 5 Jurd, Sebastion NSW 1496 18.5 6 Hoving, Eliot NSW 1329 16 7 Lam, Anthony Qld 1597 15.6 8 Karita, Sean Qld 1565 15.6 9 Fraser, Wayne Qld 1426 15.6 10 Ross, Bill NSW 1349 15.08 Juniors Division Leading Scores (total 45 players) 1 Barnard, Casey Qld 1669 22.5 2 Bourmistrov, Denis Vic 2086 20 3 Kimura, Toshi Qld 1697 20 4 Wongwichit, Phachara Qld 1782 18 5 Lubarsky, Kostia NSW 1644 16 6 Tan, Justin NSW 2108 16 7 Jager, Jesse 14 8 Lugo, Ruperto 14 Women Division Leading Scores (total 20 players) 1 Lee, Michelle Vic 1693 31.7 2 Hickman, Casey Vic 21 3 Rogers, Cathy NSW 1652 20 4 Lane, Nancy L NSW 1801 16 5 Szuveges, Narelle Vic 1720 15.7 6 Lauder, Natasha Vic 808 15.7 Unrated Division Leading Scores (total 41 players) 1 Boardman, Jeffery NSW 32 2 Kirshnei, Pedro NSW 32 3 Mitra, Druva SA 21 4 MacDonald, Chris Qld 20 5 Chaudhary, Shreyas SA 18 6 Kershaw, Max NSW 16 AUSTRALIAN TRANSFER CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS The tournament attracted 50 players and was won by Igor Bjelobrk and Julian McDonald, who went undefeated through the entire tournament. In the variation where White plays 2 e7 then Black plays 2 ... Ne4 preventing White from Queening because of the fork. If he promotes to a Knight then g3 wins. White's best is 3 Kd4 Nf6 4 Ke3 (otherwise ... Kf4 wins) Nd5+ 5 Kf2 Nxe7 6 Kg3 Nd5 and Black retains excellent winning chances. Later, if 6 e8=Q Qxf2 wins easily with the two extra Pawns in the Q ending. I would like to present the rest of the game as the finish was pretty: 8 Kd6 Qh2+ 9 Kd7 Qd2+ 10 Ke8 Kf6! White resigned as next move ... Qd6 is decisive. Thankyou Charles for an excellent report, and a great job as arbiter.
