The big surprise of the tournament was the win by 16 year junior Tristan Stevens over Srbo Zaric in the 6th round. Tristan played his ussual Smith-Morra Gambit against Zaric and played in the style of Alan Goldsmith - his coach - to break through for a convincing win. In the fifth round Srbo beat rival Bob Cowley to seemingly win the tournament. Srbo had taken a half point bye in the fourth round to leave him half a point behind Bob. The third seed was Amir Amini who finished on 5 to finish third No Name Loc Title Total 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 Cowley, Robert 2088 6 11:W 10:W 7:W 13:W 2:L 3:W 4:W 2 Zaric, Srboljub 2201 im 5.5 15:W 12:W 3:W 0:D 1:W 4:L 8:W 3 Amini, Amir 1694 5 8:W 6:W 2:L 5:W 7:W 1:L 12:W 4 Stevens, Tristan 1488 4.5 14:L 21:W 16:W 0:D 18:W 2:W 1:L 5 Utturkar, Ashwin 1370 4.5 9:L 19:W 6:W 3:L 13:D 20:W 14:W 6 Lutley, Philip 1525 4.5 22:W 3:L 5:L 0:D 16:W 18:W 13:W 7 Irvine, James 1553 4 16:W 14:W 1:L 9:W 3:L 13:D 11:D 8 Eckermann, Andrew 1314 4 3:L 23:W 10:D 11:D 17:W 14:W 2:L 9 Short, Andrew 1569 4 5:W 13:L 15:W 7:L 10:W 12:L 18:W 10 Farnik, Kym 1529 4 20:W 1:L 8:D 12:D 9:L 0:W 19:W 11 Turcaj, Pavel 1372 4 1:L 20:W 12:L 8:D 15:W 19:W 7:D 12 Peake, Michael 1540 3.5 21:W 2:L 11:W 10:D 14:L 9:W 3:L 13 Haydn, Gavin 1442 3.5 19:W 9:W 18:D 1:L 5:D 7:D 6:L 14 Altmann, Carl 1300 3.5 4:W 7:L 21:W 0:D 12:W 8:L 5:L 15 Cooke, Tristrom 1405 3.5 2:L 22:W 9:L 0:D 11:L 17:W 20:W 16 Heitmann, Syam 1254 3 7:L 24:+ 4:L 0:D 6:L 21:D 23:W 17 Han, Tian Chen 834 3 0: 18:L 22:W 20:W 8:L 15:L 0:W 18 Heitmann, Surabhi 909 2.5 0:D 17:W 13:D 0:D 4:L 6:L 9:L 19 Chaudhary, Shreyas 2.5 13:L 5:L 0:W 0:D 22:W 11:L 10:L 20 Mitra, Druva 2 10:L 11:L 23:W 17:L 0:W 5:L 15:L 21 Selvanderan, Shane 508 2 12:L 4:L 14:L 0:D 23:W 16:D 22:L 22 Pfeiffer, Andy 980 2 6:L 15:L 17:L 0:D 19:L 23:D 21:W 23 Odhavji, Vishal 1 0: 8:L 20:L 0:D 21:L 22:D 16:L 24 Hohl, Norbert 0 0: 16:- 0: 0: 0: 0: 0: Information provided by Peter Hughes/Philip Lutley/Scott Colliver ------------------------------------- MINGARA MAY MAJOR ------------------------------------- Kevin O'Chee is $600 richer and adds the Mingara May Major under 2000 to his list of tournament wins (he shared first at Toukley in March) Kevin dropped only half a point to Gideon Bratten in the 5th round. It is probably the biggest correspondance site on the web! Anyway, they are holding a chess 'olympic games' and have opened the tournament up to anyone (not just paid members such as myself)... As the captain of the Australian team (and Australia's most active player on that site - I didn't say best though!), I would like to invite anyone (everyone?) to come and join for the tournament - it is a team tournament, so there won't be a whole lot of games, and the timing is very open (usually between 5-20 days per move as a maximum)... We want to represent Australia as a winning nation just as it is in real life - so as many people as possible to join! Anyone interested in joining can just signup, or send me an email... If you signup, my id is 'meke' - I will be happy to guide anyone through the site and get them in the team... All players welcome (and all will get a game or 4!) - no age or performance restrictions... Think about it - I am a 1400 player, and probably not improving much, but enjoy every moment of it so come and join in!
