In the decisive second game, Yu once again resorted to his favourite Bird's Opening: R.Yu-G.Canfell (game 2 play off match) 1 f4 e5 2 fxe5 d6 3 exd6 Bxd6 4 Nf3 g5 5 g3 g4 6 Nh4 Ne7 7 d4 Ng6 8 Nxg6 hxg6 9 Qd3 Nc6 10 c3 Bf5 11 e4 Qe7 One of the consequences of From's Gambit (1.f4 e5) is that White gets a big centre. 12 Bg2 0-0-0 13 Be3 Bd7 14 Bf2 f5 15 Nd2 Qf7 16 e5 Be7 17 Qc4 Be6 18 Qb5 a6 19 Qe2 Bd5 20 Be3 g5 21 Bxd5 Qxd5 22 0-0 Rdf8 23 Qg2 Qxg2+ 24 Kxg2 Rh3 25 Rae1 b5 26 d5 Nxe5 27 Bd4 Ng6? A remarkable result for Yu, who also won the Australian Under 14 title in January 2002. More recently, he won the Junior and the Doeberl Cup lightning tournament. Congratulations! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NORTH SYDNEY LEAGUES CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Charles Ghenzer won this FIDE-rated event with 8/11, followed by WIM Biljana Dekic and Gareth Charles on 7. We also hear that the club plans a a 60-board match (!!) against St George Leagues Club this week. ---------------------------------- EMAIL EXCELLENCE ---------------------------------- Former Australian and British Junior champ Stephen Kerr continues to shine in the world of email chess, again topping the May rating list of the Internet Email Chess Group, which has 10,000 members in more than 100 countries. Kerr topped the previous list with 2615, but has now jumped to 2649 - more than 50 points above second-placed Dutchman Jan Schoonhoven. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NATIONAL COMPUTER CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2003 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As part of the Australian National University Chess Festival, the ANU will once again be hosting the National Computer Chess Championships (NC3). This event will take place on the evening of July 22nd. It is open to all computer chess programs in the following categories: A) Self developed programs (ie programs written entirley by the author) B) Modified programs (where the author has taken an existing program and modified it in a significant way). The competition is open to all developers world wide, although only programmers from Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Fiji and any other countries in the Oceania Zone are eligible for titles in the two categories. The event will be a swiss (depending on entries) and will be run online on a chess server, meaning competitors are not required to travel to Canberra to compete. For further details contact: Shaun Press Research School of Information Sciences and Engineering Australian National University (02) 6125 8828 (Bh) Shaun.Press@anu.edu.au ------------------------------------------------ LEAGUE WATCH SOFTWARE ------------------------------------------------ I have published an early Beta version of a new PC application called League Watch. It is a multi-sport, multi-system tournament management software. The early Beta versions have limited functionality, in particular with respect to chess. Eventually I hope to have the same level of support for chess as in Swiss Perfect plus the extra functionality that LeagueWatch will provide for all sports. This extra functionality includes tournaments with multiple sections, the knock-out system, multi-round round-robins, exchange of data over the Internet and more. The software can be found at www.swissperfect.com/lw . At this stage, I only recommend downloading the software to those who like testing products under development. The real purpose of this note is to encourage potential usrers to send me their suggestions regarding desirable features of the final product. Please email me or use the form at the Web site, whichever you prefer. E.g. A 2400 rated player draws with another 2400 player and beats a 1000 rated player. Swiss Perfect says this is an rpfm of 1893 when in reality the rating performance is 2400." Swiss Perfect says 1893 if you use Local Ratings with NO corrections. However if you use International Ratings with the defaults on or enable corrections in Local Ratings you will see that Swiss Perfect says 2400 in the former and 2393 in the latter case. It should be noted that by manipulating the options and the values of "corrections" you can arrive at just about any performance rating. The defaults in the "International Ratings" represent the standard values. While I'm at it I may as well correct Bill's statements in the ACF Bulletin 207 - Letters. "Swiss perfect has a number of bugs with regards to how it stores data in the .sco file. One of these bugs is that in some circumstances it stores the results of a particular round twice. Although this has no visible effect on the cross table or standings reports it would be a problem for the rating program which read .sco files directly if not for the fact that we trap all results where a player plays more than one game in any single round. Currently I believe that all errors generated by Swiss Perfect are handled correctly by the ACF rating program." Well done, Bill. But hang on ... what do you mean they have "no visible effect on the cross table or standings reports"? What are those bugs and errors then? The answer is they are not bugs at all. Swiss Perfect stores data in its own format (loosely based on the dBase III+ format, as I told Bill a few years back) and it knows which data is current, which is marked as invalid etc. etc. Last time I checked the definition of a software bug did not include "things that Bill does not understand".
