QUEENSLAND: 38TH PENINSULA OPEN
---------------------------------------------------------------
49 players travelled to Redcliffe for this ACF Grand Prix tournament over
the Labor Day Weekend 3-5 May, top seeds being IM Stephen Solomon, David
Stephson and WIM Anastasiya Sorokina. One player was from NSW, Bill Ross
of Coffs Harbour.
Rd. 1 Results were to plan (higher rated winning) except for Junior Sam
Long (Redcliffe Club) who played Tony Weller (Redcliffe Club), 300 rating
points higher and won.
Rd 2. Upset wins to Paul Horwood (1015) against Bob Goodwin(1437), and
draws by Michal Szabo (1486)against Jacob Edwards (1875) and Sam Long
(1397) against Leo Wilkinson (1619) (or perhaps Leo did well being a piece and
pawns down at one stage).
Rd. 3 . New to over the board, Agus Daryando (unrated, has internet rating
1250) beat Mark Stokes (1551), Ryan Sullivan (1161) beat Mike Dyer (1551) and
draws were obtained by Juniors on boards 1 & 2, where Phacara Wongwichit
(1671) drew with Stephen Solomon (2306) and Casey Barnard (1623) drew with
Anastasiya Sorokina (2197). Lower down Nick Kospartov (1401) drew with Wayne
Davidson (1604) Kelvin Finke (1123) drew with Sam Constantin (1513) and
unrated Rishabh Bhandari drew with Regina Grenfell (1012).
David Stephson and Alaun pardon won their games to lead the field on 3/3.
Rd.4. David Stephson won the Board 1clash to go clear of the field on 4/4
chased by Stephen Solomon Phacara Wongwichit (who beat Anastasiya
Sorokina (2197) and Jacob Edwards 3.5/4. Mid field ross Mills (1310)
defeated Wayne Davidson (1604) with draws to Anthony Solomon (802) against
Sam Constantin, Kelvin Finke (1123) against Michael Szabo (1486) and Mark
Stokes (1551) was lucky to escape with a draw against Hans Maul (1120).
Stephson v Solomon and Wongwicht V Edwards in Rd.5 will change the leader
board.
Rd. 5. A draw on board 1 and a win to Edwards on Board 2 sets up Edwards vs
Stephson to give us a winner, a draw and wins to Alain Pardoen, Tony
Weller, and Casey Barnard gives us 2 on 5.5/5 and 4 on 4/5 which should set
up an interesting rds 5 and 6 on the top boards. Still we have upsets Robert
Hvistendahl (1439) beating Keith Macleod (1482).
Rd.6 Heading for the winning post Stephson leads on 5.5 from Barnard and
Solomon on 5 with Barnard v Stephson on Board 1 and Sorokina v Solomon on
Board 2. Behind them are Wonwichit, Edwards and Hvistendahl on 4.5
striving for a final 5.5 and a share of the cash . Sam Long contines to
upset his club mates with a won against Mark Stokes and young Kelvin
Finke showed agin he is better than 1123 rating with a win against Wayne
Davison 1604.
Rd.7 David Stephson won a hard battle against young Casey Barnard to take
1st place 6.5/7 with Stephen Solomon 2nd 6/7 and Jacob Edwards 3rd. 5.5/7.
Final standings will be posted on the Redcliffe web page later this week
http://crcchess.topcities.com/CRCC.html . The best performance of the
unrated players (i.e without an ACF rating or no known overseas rating)
was Agus Daryando on 3.5/7 .

Best Regards - Norm Braybrooke

LETTERS
---------------

We are not going to waste the time of readers nor take up significant space
refuting the claims of David Richards in the previous Bulletin by
responding in detail.

However all of the following issues raise significant concerns regarding
his methodology.

1) The number of times he says one of his assumptions is a source of bias
is a concern.
2) If he was so good as to use Ian Routs spreadsheet it was a shame he
didn't use the RD values suggested on Ian's web page.
3) Use of the rpfm indicator from Swiss Perfect is a major problem since it
can be significantly wrong as a performance indicator and therefore
introduce errors in subsequent calculations.
E.g. A 2400 rated player draws with another 2400 player and beats a 1000
rated player. Swiss Perfect says this is an rpfm of 1893 when in reality
the rating performance is 2400.
4) Given the 1995 tournament was well before the Glicko system was
introduced it would be interesting to know how he calculated the Glicko RD
values. Given previous discussions with him and his understanding of the
Glicko system this raises serious doubts that they are suitable and are
therefore highly questionable.

However of most concern is his mixture of ratings from various rating
systems such as the ACF and QJRL ratings. Only Glicko ratings should be
used for the calculation of Glicko performance, just as only ELO ratings
should be used to calculate ELO performance. Given that the ELO system
would have allocated significantly lower ratings to the juniors, the
expected scores would have differed significantly. To arbitrarily assign
ratings from various systems as he does proves absolutely nothing, except
his lack of understanding of the fundamentals of rating systems.

We could list other problems but the above makes all his calculations and
conclusions highly questionable and pretty much worthless.

As Paul previously suggested the ratings discussion should be taken up on
the ACF Bulletin Board instead of taking up space in the Bulletin.
