He's just won two tournaments: The Australian Young Masters and The City of Sydney - see below: AUSTRALIAN YOUNG MASTERS The Australian Young Masters concluded on the weekend. The event was a 10 player round robin for players under 20. Thanks to the sponsors of the event - NSWJCL, ACF, NSWCA, Australian Chess Enterprises, Ian & Cathy Rogers & UNSW CATS. The event finished in a tie between IM David Smerdon and Ronald Yu, who has been having a fantastic few months (he finished =1st in the City of Sydney on Sunday afternoon tied with Greg Canfell). Ronald Yu caused a stir by beating current Australian Junior Champion Tomek Rej, while Jonathan Humphrey and George Xie also showed why they in the group of players to beat. In the Junior Masters, Junta Ikeda grabbed the opportunities presented to him to win both his games. Jason Hu and James Watson also won both their games on day 1 with their tactics hitting the mark. The top seeds met early in the event, and draws resulted, so it will be interesting to see how they fare against the lower rated players. Day 2 Summary The Australian Young Masters event has been given a huge shake up by Ronald Yu! The 10th seed before the tournament, he showed no mercy after David Smerdon turned down his draw offers and later blundered, dispatching the favourite quite convincingly in the end. Leon Taylor missed a golden opportunity against Laura Moylan to get off the mark, but instead of consolidating he pushed for an attack that wasn’t there and lost. The NSW Junior Masters has evened up again, with the leaders all dropping points in round 4. The top seeds are also beginning to warm up, with the top three all winning their first games for the event in round 4. Day 3 Summary We now have outright leaders in both tournaments, with Ronald Yu leading the Australian Young Masters on 5.5/7 after scoring a win and a draw today, while James Watson leads the NSW Junior Masters on 5/7. Today both leaders will play their final games. If they win them both, then they will win the tournament, but last rounds have rules of their own! The Young Masters event will be FIDE rated and for Ronald Yu it will mean he will enter the international rating list as one of the highest juniors in Australia! Day 4 Summary Ronald Yu secured first place with a solid draw against Leon Taylor, and a crushing win over Ilya Zvedeniouk. David Smerdon kept in the hunt with 2 wins, while George Xie finished with 6/9 after a quick draw with Justin Tan. James Cronan’s win over James Watson has thrown the Junior Masters event wide open. It looked for a long while as though Watson would simply cruise home to take first place, but now he may finish out of the places! Any of 6 people can win the tournament now! Day 5 Summary (I'm not sure what happened here, except that the results are as described above! - paulb) xxxxx The supporting NSW JUNIOR MASTERS (under 18s - mostly) was won by Vincent Suttor with 6/9 in a close contest. Vincent Suttor and James Cronan were the top seeds. Vincent was the Australian Under 14 representative last year and James is the current Under 14 champion, yet it is was the experienced James Watson, young gun Junta Ikeda from the ACT and Jason Hu who took the early lead! This tournament promised to be an interesting tournament with players such as Girls Under 14 Champion Heather Huddleston, Australian girls Champion Angela Song and super young gun Raymond Song also playing! Standings: 1 Vincent Suttor 6 2-5 Junta Ikeda 5.5 James Watson 5.5 James Cronan 5.5 Raymond Song 5.5 6-7 Peter Varela 4.5 Heather Huddleston 4.5 8 Jason Hu 4 9-10 Arthur Huynh 2 Angela Song 2 Thanks to arbiter Charles Zworestine and help provided by Michael Lip and Lee Forace. All players seemd to think the idea was excellent, and the event went ahead without too many problems. Hopefully this can become a regular event on the Australian chess calendar, which will allow the top juniors from around the country (NSW was fairly heavily represented this time, mostly due to the short notice of the event) to get a solid tournament in before heading overseas, so as to get them used to something like the things they will experience. - Kerry Stead CITY OF SYDNEY There will be a play off between Greg Canfell and Ronald Yu over 2 games both to be held at St George Leagues Club on Tuesday the 29th April and 6th May Place Name Feder Rtg Loc Score M-Buch. Derek won with a score of 4.5/5 from Trevor Stanning on 4/5. The final round scheduled the two prize winners together and Derek made good his threat to play the Polish Opening on the rationale that his opponent would squander time working out how to respond. - Trevor Stanning BOX HILL CHESS CLUB NEW SEASON SWISS The Box Hill Chess Club's 2003 Tuesday New Season Swiss has been won by Peter Froehlich. 23 players participated in a 9 round SWISS played at 60 minutes plus 30 seconds per move each Tuesday evening since 11/2/2003. Peter won with a score of 7.5/8 from Marcus Raine on 6.5/9. The best player in the bottom half of the field was Bruce Simpson who scored a prize with 6/9. The event proceeded with Gerrit Hartland as DOP, and Phillip O'Connor as the computer pairings officer. ACT: REPORT ON THE 41ST DOEBERL CUP by DOP Charles Zworestine "Good players make their own luck" - I know, it's been said before. But there's a reason for clichés like this one! Even the winner himself admitted at the closing ceremony: "I don't recall ever having been so freakishly lucky in the last round of a Doeberl Cup before". Then again, he's won it before. From which I'm sure you can all guess (if you don't already know) who the winner was; but if not, read on to find out… Right from the start it was clear that this was going to be an interesting Doeberl Cup. The 210 players across the three events (a record!) ensured a fantastic tournament atmosphere, while the 72 who played in the Open (also a record?) could expect many tough contests - especially from the 2 GMs, 6 IMs and 24 juniors in the event! Two visiting Malaysian juniors (the Shafruddin brothers) added even more spice to what already promised to be an intriguing tournament. And it did not disappoint: even in the first round, second seed John-Paul Wallace was held to a draw by local Ian Rout. This was perhaps the biggest surprise among many upset first round results, which included draws in Catherine Lip versus Arianne Caoili, Michelle Lee versus Denis Bourmistrov and Angela Song versus Joel Harp; Michael Wei beating Achim Gunter Hoffmann (those juniors sure can cause chaos!); Angelo Tsagarakis defeating Brian Jones; and Stephen Myers winning against David Hacche. Round 2 saw Danny Dwyer have a long and tough game with fifth seeded IM Peter Froehlich. Noteworthy was Froehlich's reaction when he was eventually offered a draw: "I'll tell you when it's drawn!". The game was drawn a few moves later. Jonathan Humphrey won against George Xie in the biggest remaining upset of Round 2. A much bigger shock in Round 3, as defending champion Smerdon miscalculated against Ed Agulto, losing a piece and eventually the game. Another recent Australian Junior Champion, Justin Tan, scored a good win over IM Guy West; while the current Australian Junior Champion Tomek Rej drew with Froehlich. With results being more predictable in Round 4, the cream had risen to the top by the time we got to Sunday. GMs Rogers and Johansen had both won their first four games on the Friday and Saturday to set up a Sunday morning showdown, while Gary Lane was also on 4/4 and Wallace was on 3.5. Darryl seemed to have a slight plus against Ian (at least to a novice like me!), but could not convert and had to settle for a draw; while Lane got to the outright lead on 5/5 by beating Wallace. The other noteworthy result was Ayvazyan's win over West to get him to 4.5; unfortunately, he got his comeuppance in the next round against Darryl. Bh5 1-0 Smerdon survived Solomon's attack material ahead and went on to win the ending, setting up a mouth-watering final round showdown with Rogers. With the scores going in to the final round being Rogers and Johansen 5.5 and Smerdon, Froehlich and Lane 5, this promised much excitement, and delivered: it was almost as good as last year! With Darryl unable to make any progress against Froehlich and eventually agreeing to a draw, Ian was happy with a draw; but Smurf wasn't! Indeed Ian offered David a draw 3 times, and was turned back every time; so he just fought on until eventually he reached the following position: Smurf (White) to move had pawns on e4, g2 and h2, king on e2 and bishop on e8, while Ian had pawns on a4, f6 and h6, king on d4 and knight on a3. In this position, instead of taking on a4, David fell for the only trap in the position, cunningly set by the wily GM: after protecting his e-pawn with Kf3, he was shocked by Nb5!, and had to resign some moves later. So Ian won the Doeberl Cup outright for the tenth time: how many more to come, I wonder? on the even boards in Round 1: second seed Quentin Reitmans drew with Mark Roberts, fourth seed Malcolm MacMillan drew with Brian Butler, and sixth seed Milenko Lojanica lost to Ivor Montague. Several draws at the top in Rounds 2 and 3 saw Oscar Oendy outright leader on 3/3 by the end of Round 3: a lead he never relinquished. He drew in Round 5 with Milan Grcic, but was still half a point in front after more draws on lower boards; then a win over Reitmans in Round 6 had him going in to the last round a full point in front. He duly drew his last round game with Michael Dunn to guarantee himself outright first on 6/7. Lojanica beat Ballarat stalwart Bas van Riel in the last round to claim outright second on 5.5; and several more draws resulted in a traffic jam for third place on 5/7. They made an impression even in Round 1, with Zhigen Lin drawing with 3rd seed Clive Lane and Jesse Maguire drawing with 4th seed David Jaksic; although an even bigger upset was the loss by second seed Andrew Fitzpatrick to John Humphrey (father of recent ex-junior Jonathan Humphrey!) on Board 2. With top seed Rick Carballo starting with 2/2 and then losing five in a row (!), it was left to some lower seeds to make the pace. Mind you, the juniors were still always going to be the most dangerous: Sherab Guo-Yuthok (1338) beat Roy Lai (1553) in Round 2, for example. But it was two players not so far out of the juniors, Lee Forace and Chris Skulte, who were equal leaders with Robert Hvistendahl (another junior!) on 4/4 after the first two days: an interesting finish was in prospect… Forace and Skulte drew on top board in Round 5, thus maintaining the equal lead after Hvistendahl drew with Luke Tobin on Board 2. They were joined on 4.5 by another junior, Jason Hu, who beat tournament veteran Anthony Keuning. When Hu put paid to Forace's chances in a long (but not drawn!) opposite coloured bishop ending in Round 6, he was on 5.5 out of 6 and his prospects looked good; but Skulte and Hvistendahl (who drew on Board 2) were breathing down his neck on 5, having been joined there by Arthur Huynh and Luke Tobin. In the thrilling final round, Huynh made things really interesting by defeating Hu on top board; Skulte joined him in equal first on 6/7 by winning the exchange and slowly grinding down Tobin, while Hvistendahl had to content himself with equal third (with Hu and Guo-Yuthok) on 5.5 after drawing with Forace. They are St George (Sydney), Universities of Sydney, Canberra, Gold Coast, Bullwinkle (Brisbane) and Suncoast. I have particularly asked Box Hill and Adelaide to make every endeavour to send a team. Six is great, eight would be terrific. All other clubs are, of course, encouraged to send teams. Ten would be awesome for the first year! We live in Melbourne, and any help you may be able to give me would be much appreciated. Kind regards, --Banda Dagher banda@deryan.com.au xxxxx The practice of giving cash prizes to juniors ought to be reviewed. Perhaps it is sending all the wrong messages, i.e. "Money is the Only Reward" and "We applaud of the Trickle-Up Effect and the Winner Takes All philosophies". Then again, it would be the height of hypocrisy to disallow it for juniors while retaining it for seniors. I propose that event organisers and promoters give some thought to Gift-Voucher prizes with big retailers or brand names. This could be used to squeeze out some sponsorship. For example: The "Tandy Chess Challenge". --Matthew Sweeney xxxxx Analysis of Rating Performance from The Gold Coast Classic Tournament Background There has been much debate recently about the relative merits of the Glicko and ELO rating systems. Despite strong claims and assertions, little critical analysis has been presented to support either side of the debate. This paper is an attempt to analyze the effect of the ratings system from results of The Gold Coast Classic Tournament. This tournament was chosen because of the availability of the relevant data, and it was possible to obtain information from the 2002, 2001, 2000 and 1995 tournaments for comparison. The initial analysis is a direct comparison of the ELO and Glicko systems, in particular how they reflect adult and junior performance. Comparison was also made of the adult and junior performance in relation to their outcomes predicted by their ratings, and how this has changed historically. Finally, the issue of adult participation rate was considered. The data is limited and serves as a pilot study. Nevertheless, it provides useful information on how juniors are being treated by the rating system and may help to identify ways in which improvements may be made in the future. Methodology Comparisons of junior and adult rating changes generated by the Glicko and ELO rating systems were made using the Glicko calculator on the web site http://www.netspeed.com.au/ianandjan/IansPage/ . Unfortunately the rating stability of the players 9/2002 was not available and so current stability was used to calculate Glicko performance. Although this is a potential source of bias it is unlikely that this would substantially alter the results of the survey. Juniors below 1000 were not included in this part of the study as the process was time consuming and it was felt little additional information would be obtained. The value of RD used in the calculation was as follows; !! 30 ! 70 blank 130 ? 240 ?? 360 No players in the analysis were found to have ? or ?? ratings. To compare adult and junior performances relatively and historically, the rpfm indicator in the Swiss Perfect program was used as a point of reference, and variations from predicted performance was recorded. Although a more sophisticated mechanism for comparison may be considered, this technique was simple (given the resources) and it was not felt to be a significant source of bias. Comparisons were made through the following rating groups; +1700 1400-1699 1000-1399 <1000 In the 1995 survey the rating group 1000-1299 was used in order to distribute participants more evenly. This would make little difference to the overall results. In some rating groups numbers were small, and this probably represents the main source of bias. A small number of participants were unknown to the authors, especially in the 1995 tournament, and these participants were omitted from the study. These were few in number and were unlikely to affect the overall results significantly. In some situations, junior participants were recorded using their Queensland Junior Ratings rather than ACF ratings. It was not possible to identify these players and may represent a source of bias. As most juniors have Queensland Junior Ratings generally much higher than the ACF list, this would tend to raise the expected performances of some juniors. Results Table 1. Year 1995 2000 2001 2002 Differential 75 180 244 304 Discussion Table 1 is a direct comparison of the rating changes generated by the Glicko and ELO systems, from the results of the 2002 Gold Coast Classic Tournament for players rated over 1000. From the results, both the adult and junior populations are treated far better in the ELO system than the Glicko System. For every rating point a junior gained an adult lost 2.2 pts in the ELO system but 6.26 pts in Glicko. Although the average rating points gained by the junior population under the Glicko system was 1.0, one junior player received 113 rating points – the remaining 26 juniors on average lost 3.2 pts. In both systems the rating points lost by the adults was greater than that gained by the juniors rated >1000. This occurred because these juniors were generally represented with very stable ratings on the ACF list. In addition, junior participation was over 70% and “compaction” is occurring about a much lower mean. It is possible that juniors rated < 1000 with little rating history may have been beneficiaries. Tables 7 & Graph 1 are an attempt to compare adult and junior performance historically, using the Swiss Perfect rpfm indicator simply as a point of reference. Deviation from expected rating performance is recorded through ratings groups. It is clear that for any given rating, juniors are out-performing adults. This was a consistent trend seen through all the tournaments analysed and through all rating groups. In 1995 the performance differential was 75pts overall, in 2000 it had increased to 180pts and last year was 300pts, indicating significant deterioration of junior ratings relative to their performance. It is clear from the results that juniors are being consistently under-rated by the ACF (and probably Queensland Junior) rating list in comparison to their adult counterparts and the gap has been widening dramatically in recent years. In most rating groups (table 2-5) it would now appear the differential is currently at least 200 points. Only in the 1000-1399 group was the differential less, and this may have been due to the small number of adults represented in the sample. Only 4 adults in the 2002 tournament were able to perform above their rating. Given the rate of differential change it is likely that the situation continue to deteriorate. The comparison of the ELO and Glicko systems suggest that both rating systems fall well short of representing this dynamic change. The junior participation rate in the 2002 Gold Coast Classic was over 70%, compared to the Australian average of 27%. In this situation, to use the language of the ACF rating committee, “compaction” is occurring around a much lower mean, and as adult participation declines (table 6) so the problem becomes intractable. Little evidence was found to support Professor Glickman’s intuition that the predictability of rating performance was increased in those players with more stable ratings (see footnote). In fact players performed more closely to their predicted ratings around the population mean, which is simply a consequence of the Bayesian methodology used. The dynamic effect of RD had little relevance to players rated over 1000 because they were generally seasoned players with stable ratings. Players with lower ratings and limited chess histories may have been beneficiaries, but there may be better ways introduce them into the rating system without risking destabilizing the ratings of seasoned players. Conclusion Given the high rate of junior participation at ACF tournaments held on the Gold Coast, our analysis suggests they are unlikely to be treated fairly in the ACF rating system. Indeed it would seem that the only way our juniors are likely to be rewarded is to travel to tournaments where junior participation rates are much lower! The Gold Coast is currently a dynamic and vibrant centre for junior chess, but we been struggling to maintain this interest into teenage years, and our adult club has been in decline over the last few years. With the opening of the Gardiner Chess centre, we have a golden opportunity to recapture our adult base and provide the structure for our junior to continue their competitive chess. To help realize our ambitions we need a rating system that is permissive, rewards effort and is above all fair! - David Richards UPCOMING LOCAL TOURNAMENTS BOX HILL FIDE-RATED EVENT April 29, May 6, 13, 20, June 3, 17, July 1. 10 player round robin Player selection by invitation following expressions of interest gbekker@mira.net RIPPONLEA CHESS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP Starts May 1, 7.30pm, 7 rounds Chess Ideas, level 1, 83 Glen Eira Rd.
