Here are a few upsets from the event. First up, young NewSouthWelshman
Justin Tan gets the better of Guy West:

21. Nb5 Qe5 22. f4 1-0

And a miscalculation cost IM David Smerdon the point in this game:

Seems to win a pawn because of Rd6 next, but ...

The point is that if the knight moves, Black has ...Nxe4

And finally, not an upset, but an interesting clash between two talented young players:

MELBOURNE CHESS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2003
The Melbourne Club Championships has concluded on the 14th March 2003
with a tie for first in one of the closest fought championships for years.
Perhaps most noteworthy is the fact that multiple winner, Guy West,
did not even place in the outright standings, owing to a shock loss to
Malcolm Pyke in round 6. The top rated player, Peter Froehlich from
Germany also failed to secure the first place, although was undefeated
to achieve a creditable 3rd with 7 points. And so it was left to New Zealand
and now Australian resident, Igor Bjelobrk and Eddy Levi, many times
participant to achieve equal 1st with 7.5/9. In the rating divisions,
Marcus Raine took out the Under 2000 prize and Mark Roberts took
out the Under 1800 prize both of them with 6/9, which incidentally was
also =4th. The one outstanding game in the tournament may have some
bearing on the Under 1600 prize and as such I can not comment on the
actual winner for that division.
The tournament was played with good spirit, though unfortunately club
stalwart John Hanks had to withdraw midway owing to ill health. There
were few forfeits overall and the newly adopted incremental time control
seems to have been accepted without any controversy.
Melbourne Chess Club now looks forward to the commencement of its
next tournament, the City of Melbourne Open on Monday 5th May at
7 pm, and to the Emmanuel Basta Memorial on the weekend of the 3rd
and 4th of May, entires closing at 9.30 am on the 3rd.
Enquiries: Malcolm Pyke on: (03) 9789 9727 or mobile 0408 150 196.

We hear that Steinitz chess club (North Rome) is trying to organise a
match against North Sydney chess club, to be played over 10 boards
on the internet. Sounds like it could be interesting!

STRATAGEM ACT UNDER 16 CHAMPIONSHIPS

Today saw the conclusion of the Stratagem ACT Under 16 championships.
The prize money was sponsored by Stratagem, Canberra’s Premier IT
personnel specialist.
Interstate visitor Heather Huddleston had a fantastic tournament winning
outright and taking home the $500 prize money. She couldn’t win the title,
which went to Michael Wei, as well as $400 second prize. A further $600
was pooled and split among four players in equal 3rd. Count backs were

AUSTRALIAN CLUBS TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Caloundra, Sunshine Coast,
29 September to 3 October 2003
Rydges Oasis Resort

We now have six confirmed teams for this inaugural event. They are St George
(Sydney), Universities of Sydney, Canberra, Gold Coast, Bullwinkle
(Brisbane) and Suncoast. I have particularly asked Box Hill and Adelaide to
make every endeavour to send a team. Six is great, eight would be terrific.
All other clubs are, of course, encouraged to send teams. Ten would be
awesome for the first year!
