ACF Bulletin #190, November 11, 2002 ========== In this issue ========== * FIDE appointments * Olympiad * Smerdon triumphs in Victorian Championships * World Youth Festival * Australian Schools Teams Championships * Kiwis humble Aussies in Australasian internet Chess Challenge * Results: Victorian Championships, Box Hill swiss, Laurieton, Hobsons Bay, NSW Rapid, "Gay Games" tournament * Upcoming Tournaments: NSW Weekender, Box Hill swiss * Grand Prix * Letters ================ FIDE Appointments ================ A couple of Australians have been elected to FIDE positions at the recent Congress in Bled. Gary Bekker was chosen as the new Oceania President, while George Howard earned a place on the FIDE Ethics Committee. New Zealand's Michael Freeman missed out on a position on FIDE's Executive Council, but received a respectable 10 votes after lobbying by George Howard and Phil Viner. The people elected for our region were from Malaysia (Hamid), the Philippines (Abundo), the UAE (Albannai) and Altanoch (Mongolia). The latter was supported by Ignatius Leong. ===================================== Olympiad: Russia wins mens, China womens ===================================== Australia performed creditably in the Bled Olympiad, with both the men's and women's teams finishing on respectable scores. In the men's event, Ian Rogers provided able leadership with a strong plus score, while Australian co-champion Nick Speck proved a valuable addition to the team. In the women's, Laura Loylan scored many useful victories, including one over a Women's Grandmaster. All games and results from the event will be available on the ACF site soon. As well, team captains Manuel Weeks and Jason Lyons have provided extensive round-by-round reports at http://www.auschess.org.au/bled/Bled.htm Olympiad, Bled, Slovenia Leading final scores (14 rounds): Men: 38.5 Russia 37.5 Hungary 35.0 Armenia 34.0 Georgia 33.5 China, Netherlands, England 33.0 Slovakia, Israel, Yugoslavia, Macedonia, Switzerland ... 29.5 Australia Women: 29.5 China 29.0 Russia 28.0 Poland 27.5 Georgia 25.5 Hungary, Ukraine, Yugoslavia, Azerbaijan 25.0 USA, Czech Republic ... 22.5 Australia Round 14 results Australia 2 - Qatar 2 Rogers-Al Modiahki 0-1 Al Sayed-Johansen 0-1 Lane-Nezad 1/2 Al Tamimi-Gluzman 1/2 Women: Australia 1.5 - Cuba 1.5 Pina-Berezina 1/2 Ramon-Moylan 1-0 Phan Koshnitsky-Frometa 1-0 ======================================= Smerdon sensation in Victorian Championships ======================================= Young IM David Smerdon has scored another remarkable result, winning the very powerful Victorian Championship ahead of GM Johansen and several other IMs. Earlier this year Smerdon won the Doeberl Cup. See tournament results below. ================== World Youth Festival ================== The World Youth Festival runs from 14 to 25 November. Australia's team is: U/18 Denis Bourmistrov Girls Andjelija Zivanovic U/16 Zong Yuan Zhao (Reserve Tomek Rej) Girls Catherine Lip U/14 Vincent Suttor Girls Heather Huddleston U/12 Ruperto Lugo Girls Michelle Lee U/10 Daniel Anderson Girls Angela Song Amy Evans is also going, but as a private entry, and David Smerdon was initially selected as under 18 representative but withdrew ue to exam commitments. The event will be held at Hersonissos, Heraklion on the island of Crete. GM Darryl Johanssen and Manual Weeks will be coaching those of the team who choose to pay for coaching and preparation during the event. For details, see http://www.greekchess.com/wycc2002/ - Neil Anderson =================================== Australian Schools Teams Championships =================================== Information that may assist team organisers with accommodation and travel arrangements is now displayed at the Chess Victoria web site: chessvictoria.com Team organisers have been asked to ensure that teams are registered by November 20. - Gary Wastell =================================== Kiwis humble Aussies in Internet Challenge =================================== The team from New Zealand's South Island has won the ACF's Internet Challenge - though they may have to share first prize with the NZ North Island team :) NZ South secured at least equal first by taking a quick draw with Northern Territory in their final game. NZ North are still playing their game against Northern Territory and could make equal first if they win it. The tournament - which still has a few other unfinished games - has involved teams from every state and territory of Australia plus NZ competing over the internet at the rate of one move a day. Among the Aussie sides, Northern Territory, Tasmania and WA have performed particularly well. Congratulations to the Kiwis on their win. The competition was held on Thursday and Friday at the Novatel Homebush Bay Format : 7 round Swiss (seedings were alphabetic as most players did not have ratings) 1 hour per player. Players were also given the opportunity to "drop in / drop out" to attend other events. 30 players from 9 countries participated. It was a really fun event with a great group of participants - the only disputes centred on Bob Keast's dress sense :) Gay Games 2 Day Chess Tournament Men Gold: 6.0/7.0 Tigran Spaan NL Silver: 5.5 Arne Eilers UK, Amir Fallah CA, Dirk Langer DE Bronze 5.0 Michael Schemm US, Kevin Trinh US Women Gold: AU 4.0 / 7.0 Silver: Marianna Kiss Blander HU 3.0 / 7.0 The main event was followed by a 7 round lightning event (20 participants) Gold: Tigran Spaan NL 6.5 / 7.0 Silver: Arne Eilers UK 6.5 / 7.0 (on count back) Bronze: Michael Schemm US 5.0 / 7.0 Congratulations to the Gay Games Organising committee and the participants for running such a great event - Robert Keast ====== Letters ====== (Well-known US chess organiser John Fernandez is trying to get in touch with Australian player David Dick in relation to the New York Masters event:) Hi Paul, Great Bulletin!
