He was just 22. Rajnesh and another young accountant had just returned from Australia after attending a seminar and were on the way to Suva from Nadi Airport when their car collided with a concrete cement-mixer truck. Both of them and another female friend died instantly. Rajnesh was the Fiji Chess Federation's representative at the 1st Oceania Tournament held at the Gold Coast in 1999, and was one of FCF's entrants in the recent Oceania Zonal held at The Warwick in Fiji. He'll be sadly missed. ========= WA news ========= The 24th annual Yanchep/Two Rocks Allegro was a great success both in terms of participation (72 players) and social fun. The main winners were 1st Tristan Boyd (2101) and 2nd Bozidar Mandic (2232). Bob Pilgrim put in a lot of work to ensure this was a popular family day with a great buffet tea, plenty of drink (beer, wine, juice), many raffle prizes, rating prizes, mystery puzzle competition, and soccer games. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The Harris-Edwardes interclub competition was contested by 13 teams (4 players per team). Midland A won the 'A' grade for the 2nd consecutive year. Midland replaced one FIDE Master with another as Daniel Dwyer moved to Sydney earlier this year but Haydn Barber returned from the UK. The Midland A team of Haydn Barber (2369), Tristan Boyd (2101), Michael Wilkins (2032) and Jay Lakner (2001) defeated Fremantle 3-1 in the final. There was a surprise in the B grade final as Metro B1 (who had clearly won their division) unexpectedly lost 1.5-2.5 to Midland B. However, Midland didn't get it all their own way as Fremantle Juniors defeated Midland C 3-1 in the final of the C grade. - Rob Maris =================================== Australian Schools Teams Championships =================================== Presbyterian Ladies' College (in Melbourne's eastern suburb of Burwood) has formally accepted an invitation to host the 2002 Australian Schools Teams Championships on the weekend of December 14 and 15. Forms for the registration of teams and players are completed and will be distributed to State Associations tomorrow. A separate registration form will need to be completed for each team in each of the four tournaments, which are: * The Australian Secondary Schools Girls Teams Championship * The Australian Secondary Schools Open Teams Championship * The Australian Primary Schools Girls Teams Championship * The Australian Primary Schools Open Teams Championship. Sets of forms for each competition will be forwarded to each State Association with a request that they be forwarded to those directly responsible for the organisation of the teams. We understand that in some States just one person might be responsible for all the state's teams, while in other States arrangements may be different. The covering letter will ask that registrations be received by November 20. Proposed details governing the format, schedule, rate of play etc will be conveyed as soon as approved by the ACF and distributed in the coming weeks. Unless the ACF directs otherwise, these arrangements will be very similar to last year. Presbyterian Ladies' College has excellent facilities which will be very suitable for a most enjoyable and comfortable weekend. The school has a web site at www.plc.vic.edu.au/ The school's chess co-ordinator, Mr Peter Mansell, has undertaken to provide a range of accommodation options which he expects will include discounted rates at the nearby Deakin University. These details will also be distributed in the next couple of weeks. - Gary Wastell ============================ Xie dominating NSW Championship ============================ Junior George Xie has surged to a 2-point lead with 7/7 as the strong NSW Championship draws to a close: 7.0 Xie 5.0 Stead, Agulto, Samar 4.0 Goris 3.5 Canfell, Zirdum, Chambers 3.0 Camer 2.5 Safarian 2.0 Harp, Ginat 1.5 Capilitan, Cabilin ================== Olympiad website link ================== Check the official site at http://www.35chessolympiad.com/news/ for the latest news. Is it true that Fidel Castro beat Bobby Fischer in a chess game at some stage. If true, could you give me any details as to where I could find it written down - or on a website? Thank you in advance. Regards. Lee Clough University of Newcastle (If anyone has any information on this, please email me at broekhuysep@bigpond.com and I'll pass it on - Ed.) ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hi Paul, I'm writing to you as a recipient of the weekly ACF chess newsletter which you are now taking responsibility for. I just wanted to say congratulations and thank you for taking the time to keep interested members of the public such as myself informed of the developments in Australian and world chess. It is one e-mail which I look forward to every week. To that end, I also want to thank you Graeme for the great work you have put in to the publication. It has been much appreciated and good luck with your future chess endeavours. Regards, Tom Livanos. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ =================== Tournament changes =================== Contact details for some Newcastle Tournaments have changed: 2002/3 tournaments 8-9 Feb Newcastle Open Newcastle George Lithgow georgelithgow@idl.net.au 9-10 Aug Coal City Open Newcastle George Lithgow georgelithgow@idl.net.au And please note that the Hobson's Bay event listed below starts on a Saturday - not Sunday as stated in last week's bulletin. ================ Tournament Results ================ 2002 Tweed Heads Open (7 rounds) 1-2 Johansen, Darryl K VIC 3200035 2472 6 Wongwichit, Phachara QLD A 1596 6 3-7 Humphrey, Jonathan QLD A 1795 5.5 Solomon, Stephen J QLD 3200043 2358 5.5 Weller, Tony QLD A 1709 5.5 Sonter, Matthew QLD A 1724 5.5 Richards, David QLD B 1489 5.5 8-10 Kimura, Toshi QLD A 1705 5 Alkin, John QLD A 1551 5 Barnard, Casey T QLD A 1618 5 11-20 Pengelley, Justin QLD A 1746 4.5 Lovejoy, David QLD 1800 4.5 Davidson, Nathan P QLD A 1564 4.5 Skulte, Christopher NSW C 1304 4.5 Murray, Luke QLD B 1508 4.5 Lazarus, Benjamin QLD BC 1468 4.5 Fraser, Wayne G QLD B 1442 4.5 Egan, Bill ACT A 1595 4.5 Van Der Meer, Andrew QLD B 1477 4.5 Varela, Peter NSW A 1655 4.5 21-34 Anderson, Daniel C QLD BC 1348 4 Wongwichit, Chatapong QLD C 1298 4 Powell, Doug G QLD C 1316 4 Myers, John QLD 3200760 1859 4 Harris, Bruce QLD B 1452 4 Ly, Moulthun QLD EC 4 Buciu, Aurel-John QLD B 1498 4 Christy, Rhys QLD CT 1282 4 Hardy, Christopher QLD C 1240 4 Escribano, Jose NSW A 1636 4 Haron, Adric QLD DC 935 4 Forace, Lee ACT A 1561 4 Olm-Milligan, Dominic QLD E 4 Cooke, Steven L QLD BC 1399 4 35-42 Thompson, Cameron M QLD CC 1118 3.5 Tkac, Miloslav NSW BT 1367 3.5 Lam, Anthony QLD A 1642 3.5 Stewart, Craig A QLD B 1510 3.5 Boross, Gabriel QLD C 1344 3.5 Adams, Zane QLD EC 3.5 Haron, Peter QLD C 1079 3.5 Wilson, Graeme NSW C 1262 3.5 43-54 Finke, Kelvin QLD DC 1014 3 Evans, Amy L QLD CFC 1055 3 Kinder, Stephen QLD D 932 3 Orevich, James QLD C 1266 3 Hvistendahl, Robert QLD B 1445 3 Duggan, Howard QLD B 1428 3 Bender, Peter G QLD C 1178 3 Layton, Jessica QLD DFC 689 3 Lithgow, George NSW C 1327 3 Ford, Daniel QLD DC 838 3 Blundell, Jian QLD DC 776 3 Livesey, Geoff QLD BT 1539 3 55-62 Thompson, Ingrid QLD DF 837 2.5 Bantegui, Paolo QLD DC 918 2.5 Papajcsik, Elrick QLD DT 927 2.5 Yang, James QLD EC 612 2.5 Richards, Spencer QLD DC 894 2.5 Webb, Nicholas QLD D 844 2.5 Rynne, Tom QLD EC 615 2.5 Scott, Gregory QLD D 756 2.5 63-68 Kinder, Jessica QLD DFC 723 2 Rynne, Sean QLD EC 2 Mccarthy, Oliver QLD EC 587 2 Webb, Christina QLD EFC 2 Curtis, Shaun QLD EC 2 Humphrey, John QLD E 2 69-71 Thomas, Nigel QLD DC 952 1.5 Richards, Elliott J QLD EC 536 1.5 Soul, David NSW CT 1072 1.5 72-75 Trip, Max QLD E 1 Dunn, Peter QLD E 1 Roberts, James QLD EC 1 Treasure, Len NSW ET 1 =============== Grand Prix Update =============== With the end of GP tournaments in Queensland for 2002, the Queensland hopefuls will have to travel if they want to improve their GP scores. There are still 7 GP tournaments to be held: three Category 1 and one Category 2 in NSW and one Category 1 in each of ACT, TAS & VIC. OPEN Ian Rogers sits comfortably in the lead, with Stephen Solomon (2nd) and John-Paul Wallace (3rd) but 2nd/3rd could change with "margin" points available in NSW tournaments. David Smerdon could pick up 40 points to challenge for 2nd (from 5th) but with only a Cat.1 in Victoria will he have the time from his studies to travel? With only 19 points from margins available, Gary Lane is not likely to rise above 4th. U2000 Tomek Rej and Kerry Stead have 1st and 2nd places and could swap those depending on margins in NSW tournaments. They are followed by Tony Weller (QLD) and Aaron Guthrie (SA) - so again, if travelling is a problem, first and second seem headed for NSW. U1600 Phachara Wongwichit - with excellent results at the Gold Coast, Redcliffe and Tweed Heads - leads by 12 points. With Jose Escribano and Lee Forace (holding 5 GP tournament scores) restricted to margins, it looks as if Phachara will be rewarded for his outstanding performances this year. JUNIOR George Xie has a 10.5 lead over Tomek Rej who is also restricted to margins (max possible 4) so George looks home (unless David Smerdon picks up 2 Cat 1s.) WOMEN Catherine Lip holds a slender lead but can pick up 12 or 16 points which would see her clear. UNRATED Chester Soltysik leads. Kelvin Finke and Louay Al Zaher (both QLD) can pass him, but only if they can travel. Carlo Canuto (NSW) is best placed to upset Chester. The Grand Prix is part of the glue that binds Australian chess together. It is not at all unusual for players to travel interstate in a search for Grand Prix points. Grand Prix events tend to be better supported that non GP event. Good club/state management means good planning. May I appeal to all clubs/states to complete their 2003 calendar of events within the next couple of weeks and include an event/events in the Grand Prix calendar. We would particularly like to see Western Australia and Victoria include at least five events in order that players from those states have as much chance of winning the Grand Prix as those from the other states. Grand Prix supervisor Norm Braybrooke has done an outstanding job in administering the Grand Prix. I'm very much hoping that he will continue in the job for another year. Please enter your events in the 2003 GP calendar simply by emailing Norm Braybrooke at chessnut@windsor.net.au with a copy to Graeme Gardiner at ggardiner@auschess.org.au. I'll be experimenting with a few different formats: an HTML (Hyper-Text Mark Up Language - ie, webpage-style) email version; a PDF (Portable Document Format) version; and a downloadable, zipped (compressed) HTML version. (The plain vanilla text-email version will still be sent out for those who prefer it) The great advantage of HTML is that information can be presented in a way that's more attractive and easier to read. Photos and other illustrations can be included, and tournament results can be put into tables for easier viewing. *Downloadable* HTML has the added advantage that readers can play through collections of games on their computer, even when they're not connected to the internet. PDF, on the other hand, is the format of choice for printing out documents. Readers will be able to print out a more attractive version of the Bulletin - and eventually, other materials - for easy reading on the train or away from their computers. I hope to have samples of these new formats available on the ACF site soon: go to www.auschess.org.au ============================== .... And what it means for contributors ============================== The new versions mean that pictures, games (PGN) and illustrations will be in demand! So please, if you're submitting a tournament report or something else to the Bulletin, see if you can include a photo, a few games or anything else. It will help to make a more interesting publication. If you're a tournament organiser submitting a report of an event, please include the SwissPerfect files - these can be used to produce .html pages. Players of all levels and modes (over-the-board, correspondence, internet, problematists, etc) are welcome to contribute anything chess-related. There are hundreds of interesting games played in Australia every week, and other players would like to see them! All submissions for the Bulletin should be emailed to broekhuysep@bigpond.com and cc:d to ggardiner@auschess.org.au If you need to mail material, the address is: Paul Broekhuyse 19 Gill Avenue Avoca Beach NSW 2251 Best wishes till next time ...
