ACF Bulletin # 185 - 6 October 2002 IN THIS ISSUE Olympiad Sponsorship, ACF Presidency, ACF Admin Fee, World Youth Festival, Australian Junior Championships, Australian Clubs Team Championships, 2002 Grand Prix, Tweed Heads Open, Gosford Open, Laurieton November Open, Box Hill Open, 22nd Fisher's Ghost Open, Laurieton September Open, Correspondence. OLYMPIAD SPONSORSHIP (BLED, SLOVENIA 25 OCTOBER TO 11 NOVEMBER) Australian Women's Olympiad team captain Jason Lyons has been doing an outstanding job on organising sponsorship for our Olympiad teams. He has secured a grant from the NSW Premier's Department for $7,000 (for the whole team, not just NSW players) and is close to finalising a sponsorship deal with Ansell to promote their Checkmate brand condoms. These two sponsorships together will bring the Olympiad Appeal to over $20,000, which will be the most substantial support yet for our Olympiad teams. Jason, who on his emails describes himself as actor, chess tutor, english & drama teacher, camp leader, theatre manager and sports addict, has been active with radio interviews with Adam Spencer on Triple J and Alan Jones on 2GB and has organised media through the Sydney Morning Herald Column 8 and the sports pages of the Sun Herald. Jason also signs off his current emails with: Moments when you should sense DANGER in a game of chess: 1. Your draw offer sends all the people watching your game into uncontrollable laughter. 2. There has been a change in the pawn structure. Your opponent has 8 and you don't have any. 3. You have a won position and your opponent has a gun. Jason is one of the real characters of Australian chess and we very much value his leadership. Full details of the Bled Olympiad at www.35chessolympiad.com. ACF PRESIDENCY Nominations for the ACF Presidency close tomorrow. We do have at least one nomination. I'll make a formal announcement in next week's bulletin. ACF ADMIN FEE FOR 2003 In last week's bulletin I advised that a council motion had been passed that the admin fee be scrapped for 'all junior' events. This only applies to rapid events. The actual motion that was passed was: "That the Admin Fee be set at 25 cents per player per game on the main list, 25 cents per player per game on the rapid list for events involving adult players, and a free service for 'junior only' events." WORLD YOUTH FESTIVAL HERAKLIO, CRETE 14 TO 25 NOVEMBER 2002 - MONA LEE On behalf of the children and their parents who attended the coaching in Canberra, I would like to thank the Oliver family for their generous sponsorship and hospitality. They all learnt a lot and enjoyed themselves tremendously. Thank you also to the coaches - Ian Rogers, Darryl Johansen and Laszlo Hazai. Editors note: On behalf of the Australian chess community, I would again like to thank the Oliver family most sincerely for everything they have done to try and further junior chess in Australia. I would also like to thank Mona Lee for all she has done this year in managing both the (three) Children's Olympiad teams in Malaysia and the upcoming trip to Crete. There is an enormous amount of work involved and we are all very grateful. Webpage for the World Youth Festival: http://www.greekchess.com/wycc2002/.
