The Sydney Games Centre Level 1, 195a Burwood Rd Burwood NSW (2 minute walk from Burwood Station - above Snap Printing) www.sydneygamescentre.com phone: 02 9715 3229 Contacts: Kieren and Chris. Quote from the web page: "The Sydney Games Centre (SGC) is the premier store in Sydney for strategic competitive games, providing not only the products but a dynamic place to play throughout the week. Collectible card games, miniature wargames, role-playing games, board games and even classic games such as chess are all welcome. SGC has tournaments every day of the week for games, as well as providing the latest and greatest in games, peripherals and service." The Sydney Games Centre is an affiliated club with the NSWCA and looking forward to becoming an active part of the Sydney chess scene by offering regular events and entering team events. The venue is particularly well suited to the promotion of junior chess in Sydney offering a venue accessibly at far better times than currently available though the established Leagues Clubs. The feature of this event is that although it is primarily for individuals, it doubles as a teams (of 4) competition, with the teams result decided by the sum of net ratings gain/loss as decided by the Swiss Perfect computer programme. Whilst the strong players are much more likely to win the main individual prizes, it is a little harder for them to win the teams prizes. This has proved a very popular tournament, especially since the teams content was introduced. Contact Graeme Gardiner ggardiner@auschess.org.au 07 5530 5794. CHESS MAN NEEDS MATE - CARMEL SHUTE Australian Senior Chess Champion, Paul Dozsa (or Pal, in his native Hungarian) needs a pal – or a few pals with a little bit of cash to spare. In return, Mr Dozsa has offered to play exhibition matches of speed chess or do promotion work. In January, Mr Dozsa, a South Melbourne resident aged 62, won the Australian senior championships. He was then selected by the Australian Chess Federation to represent the nation at the World Seniors’ Chess Championship in Naumburg, Germany, from October 20-November 3. The only problem is Mr Dozsa is a pensioner and simply can’t afford the fare or spending money. “My accommodation and food in Naumburg are covered but I need to get there. I’ve approached Qantas for the fare but haven’t heard back. If it was at all possible, I’d love to take a side visit to Hungary to see my brother, sister and niece whom I haven’t seen since I defected in 1964, though we do keep in touch through email,” he said. Mr Dozsa was then a professional chess player and he defected on tour in Austria. He found his way to Sydney after meeting an Australian embassy official who was a chess fan. Because he landed without a word of English, Mr Dozsa’s job opportunities were limited. He started as a kitchen hand, ending up one stage as a restaurant manager. He says his life has been affected by being used as a human guinea pig at the age of 18 in military research being undertaken by the Warsaw Pact. “So I’ve haven’t ended up with any money. I would love the honour of representing my adopted country of Australia at the world championships,” he said. Mr Dozsa situation came to the attention of Port Phillip Council when he sought assistance with accommodation through Kate Incerti, the housing support and information officer. Mr Dozsa estimates he needs $2000 and a return air ticket to fulfil his dream. If you can help with a donation, please contact Agnes and Tibor Romay on 9529 8343. John Riches ARDEN DILLEY Mr. Gardiner, My name is Arden W. Dilley and I am the president of the Miami-Dade Scholastic Chess Assocition and co-chair of the Junior Orange Bowl Committee's International Chess Tournament. We are hosting the Pan American Intercollegiate Championship which is only open to Colleges in this Hemisphere. However, if a country outside the hemisphere, the #1 school, University of Texas in Dallas, would like a side match. It is my guess that if many other schools would like to do the same. Someday, in the next couple of years, I hope to make this into a world competition. Meanwhile, our K-12 {4 - 19 year olds) competition is open to the world. We would like for you to send a team. I believe that we will get a Russian team and a Canadian team this year to go with the US, Ecuadorian, Venzuelan, Bahamian, Jamacian, and others who have been attending the past few years.
