ACF Bulletin # 179 - 25 August 2002 Rather a quiet week! IN THIS ISSUE World Youth Olympiad, ACT Championships, National Universities Teams Championships, National Junior Coordinator, 2002 Grand Prix, Correspondence. WORLD YOUTH UNDER 16 OLYMPIAD I have heard from GM Ian Rogers, the coach of Australia's 12 players in this event, as follows: Leading scores after 5 rounds (28 teams, 10 rounds): =1.Ukraine, China 15; 3.India 14.5; 4.Indonesia 13.5; 5.Iran 13; 6.Uzbekhistan 12.5; ...=12. Australia A 10.5 (Bourmistrov 3; Rej 2.5; Lip 3; Lee 2); ...24. Australia C 7.5 (Cronan 3; R.Harris 2; Reid 1; B.Harris 1.5); 25. Australia B 6.5 (Suttor 2.5; Perkovic 1.5; Guzel 1.5; Mandla 1). I think I can't say much more since at the mid-way point we don't really know much - only that teams B and C will be tailenders and team A should finish mid-field. The event organiser advised of the following internet site for results. Unfortunately, so far no results have been posted. http://www.thechessnetwork.net/index.php?module=PostCalendar&func=view&viewt ype=details&eid=2 ACT CHAMPIONSHIPS For the latest progress on this event, please go to www.auschess.org.au/actca/, a site which is well managed by Peter Simpson. NATIONAL UNIVERSITIES TEAMS COMPETITION I'm a little disappointed that, to date, we have been unsuccessful in finding someone with the time and energy available to have a real go at getting this going. This project, in my opinion, should play an important role in developing Australian chess. An enthusiastic administrator should be able to get this event going. The hard part, again in my opinion, is to make personal contacts with appropriate university people in each state and ensure participants from each state (or at least several states). The actual logistics of organising the event should be a closed equation. So once again, I appeal for a volunteer organiser for this event. If it can't be for this year, next year would be fine. Please contact me on ggardiner@auschess.org.au. NATIONAL JUNIOR COORDINATOR - KERRY STEAD I am looking to get a series of matches between NSW juniors and juniors from other states happening over the internet. To begin with, I thought it might be a good idea to start with Victoria and South Australia. Depending upon the success of the event, other states can be brought in, or it could be expanded to incorporate adults in something akin to the old telechess matches. However, before getting carried away, initial matches need to be organised. The format I had in mind was a 10 board match, with 6 Under 18 Open boards, 1 Under 18 Girls board, 2 Under 12 Open boards and 1 Under 12 girls board (though this is by no means fixed). Games would be played on Sunday (though obviously they would have to be scheduled to avoid pre-existing events like Dorothy Dibley Shield), probably starting in the early afternoon, although I suppose it will depend on what works best for the organisers and kids. Time control all moves in 60 minutes with 30 seconds per move (again just a suggestion, and open to change). As for where to play the events, ICC seem happy enough to host such events (www.chessclub.com), and it has the advantage of being (I think) the server that has the greatest number of active Australian members. What is required at each end is 10 computers with internet access. NSW has at least two possible venues where there are 10 computers with internet access available. I think Adelaide may be in a position to host such an event at the moment at the chess centre. Hopefully something can be found in Melbourne for Victorian players (if something like this does not already exist), possibly in an office that is not used on Sunday, a school, or any other place where there are suitable facilities for such an event. At the moment, the matches would be limited to 10 boards, however if there is sufficient interest, perhaps this could be expanded to allow a more participatory focus (rather than quality), with a shorter time control and players taking turns on the 10 boards [eg: if there are 30 players from NSW & SA, then could start with NSW 1 v SA 1; NSW 2 v SA 2; ... NSW 10 v SA 10 at 60+30sec/move. When that match was complete, could then have NSW 11 v SA 11; NSW 12 v SA 12; ... NSW 20 v SA 20 at say 15+5sec/move, and so on until all kids got to play a game against someone. This format could also be used if there were greater numbers at one end, so that some kids would play 2 (or more games), so that every kid plays at least once]. If you have any further question, queries, or are able to offer assistance in getting this up and running, feel free to email me, or if you wish to have a look at ICC, my account there is Hip-HopBandit.
