TRIBUTES TO JACQUES ENGELANDER Tributes to Jacques Engelander appeared in yesterday's Saturday Age (Chris Depasquale) and Weekend Australian (Phil Viner). A tribute from Jacques' son John is shown on the ACF front page www.auschess.org.au. Peter Parr gives his tribute to Jacques here: During the 30 years I knew Jacques he was always involved in promoting chess-organising numerous simultaneous displays in shopping centres throughout Australia to raise money to send our teams to the chess Olympiads, and organising quality free venues with sponsorship for major tournaments. Jacques liked people. He met many hotel managers, club directors and business contacts and numerous successful chess events occurred thanks to Jacques. Jacques imported a very wide range of products from the Far East and was assured of a comfortable income as the distributor of Novag Chess Computers in Australia - a very steady and profitable business. Jacques donated many Novag chess computers each year for nearly twenty years to the Doeberl Cup Easter Weekend tournament and the Ballarat March weekender mainly to junior players. Jacques and Novag donated about $12,000 worth of chess computers to the World Junior in Adelaide in 1988 and together with Peter Wallman's major sponsorship the event was perhaps the most Important event ever held in Australia. It was the strongest World Junior ever. Jacques attended a number of chess Olympiads and was a major organiser of Euwe, Karpov and Spassky tours. He served in the Australian Army in Darwin during World War II. He learned chess in his native Holland when the game become very popular due to the young Euwe in the 1930's. He will be sadly missed. PENRITH NEWS FROM BRIAN JONES The official entry form for the 2003 Australian Open Championships at Penrith is now available. We have started to receive entries and, with an excellent venue, expect a good attendence. Panthers have confirmed that they will be Associate Sponsors, but we are currently seeking committments from a range of other potential sponsors in order to boost the prizefund and secure overseas players. IM Gary Lane and WIM-elect Nancy Lane have agreed to host the 2003 Chess Trivia Night at 7pm on Sunday 5 January 2003. Full details are available at www.chessaustralia.com.au/penrith. With best regards, Ignatius Leong CHILDREN'S OLYMPIAD KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA 20 TO 28 AUGUST Australia is now sending three teams to this important event. It commences on Tuesday. Unfortunately I've been unable to locate a webpage at this stage. We wish our teams all the very best. Team One: Tomek Rej, Denis Bourmisrov, Catherine Lip and Michelle Lee. Team Two: Vincent Suttor, James Cronan, Matthew Perkovic and Blair Mandla. Team Three: Rebecca Harris, Adam Guzel, Vaness Reid and Ben Harris. The team coach is GM Ian Rogers. Many thanks again to Mona Lee for organising all the logistics. MARKET RESEARCH Around 20 years ago I believe that REARK did research which showed that around two million Australians could play chess. As far as I am aware, that is around the limit of market research on chess in Australia. In the modern era, it would be most helpful if we had a lot more information upon which to base development decisions in Australian chess. I realise that this kind of professional market research can be very expensive. Do we have anyone in the Australian chess community who works in this profession and who would be prepared to conduct some meaningful market research on behalf of Australian chess on an honorary basis please? If so, please email me on ggardiner@auschess.org.au. Anecdotally, I'm surprised that a very high percentage of adults seem to me to be able to play a half decent game of chess. NATIONAL JUNIOR COORDINATOR Brett Tindall has advised that due to work and university commitments, he is unable to do this position justice. I would like to thank Brett for the work he has done to date in this very important role. I'm very pleased to say that Kerry Stead has kindly offered to give this task his full commitment. We wish him every success. I can think of few more important tasks than this in Australian chess. Brett has generously offered to help Kerry in any way he can given his heavy current workload. Kerry Stead's contact details are email kerrys@ihug.com.au and phone 02 9759 0336. Incidentally, I understand the World Under 20s will be in India sometime during November or December. WA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS - ROB MARIS FM Haydn Barber (2369) won the WA State Championship for the tenth time with an unbeaten 7.5/9, which included a draw with second placed teenager Tristan Boyd who finished just half a point behind. Haydn overcame 2001 State Champion Michael Wilkins with black in the last round - only a month previously Michael had comfortable drawn with Haydn in the Midland Club Championship. A further point behind Tristan were 5 players who shared third place with Natalie Mills taking out the title of 'Reserves Champion' (U1850). Although Rob Galvin and Mohammad Jahangirian both had well played draws with Haydn they only managed a total of 4/9 each! The time control of 90 minutes plus 40 seconds per move was well received by most of the 35 players. FIERCE FIGHT IN THE COAL CITY OPEN By DOP Charles Zworestine Only 26 players turned up for the annual Coal City Open, one of two main weekenders held each year in the vicinity of Newcastle. What was the reason for such low numbers (8 down on last year)? Was it the occurrence of three GP weekenders relatively nearby in the previous four weeks (Fairfield, ANU Open and the NSWCA weekender in Rose Bay), resulting in many players being “chessed out”? Or was it the six round format (4 on Saturday and only 2 on Sunday), never too popular with the majority of players with whom I have spoken? Personally, I do not believe it was the time controls of one hour plus ten seconds per move from the start (of which I am in favour); but what do the players think of this? Whatever the reasons, it was a relatively small tournament that was held last weekend at the Club Nova Cardiff, a short distance from Newcastle. But small tournaments have a pleasant atmosphere all of their own, as many players will tell you. They are more friendly and intimate, and the players often seem to enjoy themselves more. After all, these are the real chess aficionados, and they form a very close-knit group. In this one the event proceeded smoothly and virtually dispute-free, as the players just got down to the business of playing chess; and there were some very interesting and exciting results… Mind you, nothing much very exciting looked like happening in the first two rounds, as every single game went according to rating (with no draws)! Local Dimitri Kavetski troubled Lee Jones in Round 2 – he could have forced a position where he had two pawns to one, which was probably drawn – but eventually lost a tough endgame. But it was Round 3 where things really started to happen. Our first three draws occurred, one on top board between fourth seed Johny Bolens and top seed Ronald Scott; but the real upset draw was achieved by Graeme Deacon (1499) against Jason Chan (1802). However, the bigger upsets were sixth seed Tomek Rej’s excellent win over second seed Lee Jones, and seventh seed Michael Lip winning a king and pawn ending against fifth seed George Xie. Meanwhile, Brian Jones joined Tomek in the outright lead on 3/3 by beating Bernard O’Riordan; but by far the most fascinating game of the round was between Catherine Lip and Lee Forace. An intriguing ending where Lee (White) had rook and two connected passed pawns on the sixth and seventh ranks (supported by his king) against queen and passed pawn on a3 (also supported by Catherine’s king) resulted, after various fulminations, in Catherine winning Lee’s rook but all the pawns promoting: two queens each! Unfortunately, Lee then managed to blunder BOTH his queens by interposing the wrong one in answer to Catherine’s check: losing 18 points in one move must be some sort of record… Sanity returned in Round 4, the last of the Saturday rounds, with the top board results being Brian Jones drawing with Tomek, Ronald Scott beating Lee Jones, Bolens defeating Kavetski, George Xie over Catherine Lip and Michael Lip winning against O’Riordan. The only real upset was caused by Doug Carey, who beat Jason Chan. This left us with four leaders on 3.5 out of 4 (Ronald Scott, Brian Jones, Johny Bolens and Tomek Rej), with a further three players on 3 (Michael Lip, George Xie and Brendan Norman); obviously, an intriguing day was in prospect on Sunday. What’s more, Round 5 did little to sort things out, as the top two boards (Rej-Scott and Bolens-Brian Jones) were drawn, enabling Michael Lip and George Xie to catch them by beating Norman and Deacon respectively. With six of the top seven seeds equal leading on 4/5, the last round was obviously going to be fun… And so it was, with excitement and one game going down to the wire. On Board 1 Scott made short work of Xie, who stuffed up the opening, to guarantee the top seed at least equal first. Tomek joined him after Bolens “sacrificed” the exchange against him for insufficient compensation, and Tomek hung on through all of Johny’s tricks to beat him. But could Brian Jones or Michael Lip join them? It appeared Brian (White) was winning quite handily, but Michael (fighter that he is) hung on and eventually forced a drawn ending in Brian’s time pressure. These two thus had to content themselves with equal third, while O’Riordan and Jose Escribano shared the Under 1700 prize after winning their last round games. Leading final scores/prizewinners: 1st = Ronald Scott, Tomek Rej 5/6; 3rd = Brian Jones, Michael Lip 4.5; 1st/2nd = Under 1700 Bernard O’Riordan, Jose Escribano 3. Regards, Kym Farnik DAVID LOVEJOY Graeme, You asked for comment on how Australia should vote in the FIDE election. My preference would be to vote for the new ticket. I don't know much about Mr Leong, but we know a great deal about Ilumzhinov and I would hope that no self-respecting organisation would vote again for a gangster when there is an alternative available. Cheers David Lovejoy JONATHAN SARFATI Hi Graeme I agree with Tim Reilly that Australia should get behind Ignatius Leong for FIDE president. There would also be many New Zealanders who appreciate Mr Leong's efforts to organise tournaments and help individual players. His services to chess date from way before the Khan of Kalmykia appeared from nowhere and destroyed the World Champs and real time controls.
