ACF Bulletin # 175 - 28 July 2002 (Please note that emails to me since Saturday morning have not been received as my mail server has been subjected to a malicious mail bombing campaign. This may take another day or two to sort out. Outgoing mail should be arriving ok - Graeme Gardiner) IN THIS ISSUE Gluzman Appeal dismissed, Olympiad Captains, Australian Junior Championships, World Youth Festival, Proposed National Clubs Championships, British Championships, 2002 Grand Prix, August Sydney Weekender, Rooty Hill Open, North Queensland Open, World Universities Championships. GLUZMAN APPEAL DISMISSED The ACF Appeals Tribunal has dismissed the appeal against the Olympiad non selection of Michael Gluzman. The reasons are given on the ACF webpage http://www.auschess.org.au/. OLYMPIAD CAPTAINS The ACF Council has confirmed the Australian Captains for the Bled Olympiad as follows: Open Manuel Weeks, Women Jason Lyons. Congratulations to them and commiserations to Vladimir Feldman and Bob Krstic who missed out. AUSTRALIAN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS IMMANUEL COLLEGE, ADELAIDE 11 TO 24 JANUARY The ACF Council have approved the conditions for this important event. My apologies, as I should have announced these details a couple of weeks ago but I inadvertently omitted this item. SACA is looking into changing the dates to 13 to 24 January (with two rounds per day in a couple of early rounds) in order to avoid the problem of following on too close to the Australian Open in Sydney which concludes on 10 January. This change will need to be ratified by SACA and the ACF. Some details from the successful bid: Accommodation available at Immanuel College for 98 boarders. Venue fully air conditioned. Time Controls Under 18 90 mins a side plus 60 secs a move (Fischer), Under 12 60 mins a side plus 60 secs a move (Fischer). Chief Arbiter IA (elect) Charles Zworestine. Organising Committee: David Bierton (Treasurer), Patty Chehade and Cheryl Reeve (Activities Coordinators), Roland Eime (IA), Alan Goldsmith (SAJCL), Julie Morrissey and Julie Obst (Accommodation), Joe Tanti (ACF), Robin Wedding (Bulletins). WORLD YOUTH FESTIVAL HERAKLIO, CRETE 14 TO 25 NOVEMBER 2002 Denis Bourmistov is confirmed as the Australian representative in the World Under 18s. Denis has been in great form this year and we wish him every success in this event. Full details at www.greekchess.com/wycc2002. PROPOSED NATIONAL CLUBS CHAMPIONSHIPS Kerry Corker and Graeme Gardiner have been refining their proposal to the ACF Council for the national clubs competition. A national finals week at Rydges Oasis Resort Caloundra www.rydges.com/oasis. What a great venue right next to the beach! The initial concept is a great holiday week of teams chess. The event will be FIDE rated if at all possible. Kerry Corker has offered to pay for this cost in addition to his offer to underwrite the event up to $1,000. In the first year we propose to open up the competition to any teams from around the nation. We have given an undertaking to the Oasis Resort to give them a definite confirmation or cancellation by 31 March 2003. Our minimum numbers are four teams from three states. If we get more nominations we will be delighted. State qualification events can be introduced if and when the event catches on. Dates 22 to 26 Sept 2003 (three playing days and two rest days). By staying in self-catered three bedroom villas the total accommodation cost is around $120 to $150 per person for a five to seven night stay. There is more up market accommodation available for those who prefer, but even this accommodation would be described as up market. Players can stay for longer at the special rates if they wish. Relatives/friends can also stay for the same rates. Teams of eight with at least three females and three males. (One of the main aims of the competition is to encourage clubs to strive to involve more females in chess). Optional extra chess: Gold Coast Classic Grand Prix Cat 3 Sat/Sun 20/21 Sept 2003, Redcliffe Open or Tweed Open Grand Prix Cat 3 Sat/Sun 27/28 Sept 2003 (Redcliffe and Tweed haven't yet been asked if they would like those dates). Jacob Edwards of the Bullwinkle Club writes: The mighty Bullwinkle Club will, of course, not be drafting in players specifically for the Australian Club Championships. The only membership rule for Club Bullwinkle is that, if you play for us once, you're in for life! (Which makes us rather selective in who we pick!) Plus, of course, we already have a fairly strong team available: 01. David Smerdon 02. Andrew Meldrum 03. Nik Stawski 04. Jacob Edwards 05. Jonathan Humphrey 06. Karina Mowles 07. Allinta Rose 08. Michelle Mowles Brian Jones, the organiser of the upcoming Australian Open in Penrith, also has shown strong interest in the event. One can imagine his team would include Lee Jones, Gary and Nancy Lane etc. Please register your interest with Kerry Corker kppc@ausinfo.com.au. BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS 28 JULY TO 10 AUGUST Australian IMs and Olympiad team members Alex Wohl and Gary Lane will be playing in the British Championships over the next fortnight.
