OLYMPIAD SELECTIONS Michael Gluzman has appealed against his non-selection in the Australian team for the upcoming Bled Olympiad. He has asked that his appeal be made public. "Dear appeal committee: I would like to appeal under ACF Selection Procedures by-law 10.3.2 That the applicant was clearly ranked such that no selectors could have reasonably given the applicant that ranking based on the information supplied to the selectors. I have a very strong opinion that Nick Speck should not be selected anywhere in top 7. Although I do not have materials the selectors have I beleive Nick had the only result: coming =1st at the Australian Championship. He came ahead of me by only 1 point. In order to prove that no selectors could have reasonably given the applicant that ranking I will argue that one result could not show that the particular player is stronger, weaker or equal. 1a I would like the appeal commitee to consider the results of the last FIDE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS when Anatoli Karpov was knocked out of the tournament in the first round. Peter Leko was knocked out in the second round. Does that mean those two player weaker than players finished ahead of them. Please note that in those examples the ratings of the above players are very high making it even more obvious that one tournament is not a consideration. 2. I would like the appeal commitee to go through Nick's games at the cmampionship. You will clearly see it that he was vey lucky in at least three games. I hope the selectors did the same in order to work out how he got his result. 3. I would like to point out that David Smerdon came 1st in 2002 Doeberl Cup with rating performance of around 2700. I want to point out that the DOEBERL CUP is FIDE RATED tournament with time control SIMILAR TO OLYMPIAD. He was only selected 8th! making it very inconsistent from selections point of view. Again I would strongly argue about the nature of one off result. David played in more tournaments and his results are clear indications that his Canberra result was just a luck. 4. I would like you to consider that all my performances at major tournaments ZONAL, AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP, LAST BOX HILL CHESS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP AND AUSTRALIAN MASTERS ARE VERY CONSISTENT. THAT IS WHY MY FIDE RATING IS 2405. 5. Talking to the selectors I was under strong impression that there is a bias. To make this appeal more fair I would like to have written statements from the selectors why they chosen Nick higher then number 8. I would like a copy of this email to be given to the selectors as well. 6. I would like you to consider the ACF rating system in order to understand why Nick has a high ACF rating. 7. To make this appeal more fair I would like to have all information submitted to the selectors forwarded to me. This may lead to finding out the reasons behind some selections AND MORE IMPORTANTLY give me information as I want APPEAL UNDER 10.3.1 There was a material error or omission in the selection process that has disadvantaged the applicant. 8. I strongly beleive that the ACF Selection Procedures by-law have to be changed. At the moment we are shooting ourselves in a foot and victims are THE AUSTRALIAN CHESS OLYMPIAD TEAM AND THE ACF. I was under impression from 1994 Moscow Olympiad that AUSTRALIA CAN COME IN TOP 10. Look forward to more organised chess enviroment in AUSTRALIA more opportunities for Australian citizens who wish connect their lives with THE GAME OF CHESS and wish a good luck to AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIAD TEAM in Bled." Sydney barrister and former ACF President Robert Colquhoun has been appointed Appeals Tribunal Convenor and he has appointed ACF Life Members Robert Jamieson and Peter Parr to complete the Appeals Tribunal as per the relevant ACF By Law. See the ACF Constitution and By Laws at http://www.auschess.org.au/newcon/. I understand that the Appeals Tribunal hope to make a decision by this Thursday. Gary Bekker has advised that an audit of the vote tally has revealed that the tied vote between IM Wallace and IM Wohl should have been resolved in favour of IM Wallace. The board order of these two players has now been corrected. ANU OPEN 27-28 JULY 2002 $3,000 in prizes! WORLD YOUTH FESTIVAL HERAKLIO, CRETE 14 TO 25 NOVEMBER 2002 I understand that due to the change of dates of this event and exam commitments at this time, IM David Smerdon has been forced to withdraw as the Australian Under 18 represenative. I believe that Denis Bourmistrov will now become the Australian Under 18 representative, but I'm yet to receive confirmation from Brett Tindall on this. Full details at www.greekchess.com/wycc2002. PROPOSED NATIONAL CLUBS TEAMS COMPETITION As far as I'm aware Kerry only received one email of feedback (which was positive) on this matter. We would like to hear from individuals who believe that they would be interested in organising their club to send a team for this event, especially if there was no state qualifying competition and any clubs could attend. Please email Kerry Corker kppc@ausinfo.com.au with your ideas/comments. A national finals week at Rydges Oasis Resort Caloundra www.rydges.com/oasis. Dates 22 to 26 Sept 2003 (three playing days and two rest days). (We can't keep everyone happy re school holidays because they vary around the country.) By staying in self catered three bedroom villas the total accommodation cost is around $120 to $150 per person for a five to seven night stay. There is more up market accommodation available for those who prefer. Players can stay for longer at the special rates if they wish. Relatives/friends can also stay for the same rates. Teams of eight with at least three females and three males. (One of the main aims of the competition is to encourage clubs to strive to involve more females in chess). Our proposal is for each state to organise its own qualifying competition but we are prepared to look at the idea of dispensing with state qualifiers and allowing any club to nominate for the national finals in the first year. Optional extra chess: Gold Coast Classic Grand Prix Cat 3 Sat/Sun 20/21 Sept 2003, Redcliffe Open or Tweed Open Grand Prix Cat 3 Sat/Sun 27/28 Sept 2003 (Redcliffe and Tweed haven't yet been asked if they would like those dates). NEW ZEALAND OLYMPIAD TEAM - BOB SMITH The New Zealand teams to compete at the World Chess Olympiad in Slovenia from October 25 to November 11 have been selected. They are: Men's team FM Alexei Kulashko (Auckland), IM Russell Dive (Wellington), Igor Bjelobrk (Melbourne), FM Bob Smith(Auckland), FM Scott Wastney(Melbourne), CM Tony Dowden(Dunedin) Women's team - Vivian Smith, Edith Otene, Evginia Charomova, Sue Maroroa (all from Auckland). The Men's Team Captain and overall Team Manager is ICM Michael Freeman (New Plymouth). The Women's Team Captain is Mark Van Der Hoorn (Wellington). Competition for the men's team was keen, with several players unlucky to miss out. New Zealand Champion Anthony Ker was unavailable, while FM Paul Garbett withdrew at a late stage. IM Russell Dive and CM Tony Dowden were included automatically as a result of their performances in the 109th NZ Championship in Christchurch. In choosing the remaining four players, the selectors - International Arbiter Bob Gibbons, ICM Michael Freeman and Arthur Pomeroy - put some emphasis on activity. The Women's Team is a blend of experience and youth. Several leading players were not available, and this has given some promising juniors a great opportunity. On board one Vivian Smith will compete at her 11th Olympiad - a NZ record - while Edith Otene is also a seasoned campaigner. But Evginia Charomova and Sue Maroroa are debutantes. 13-year-old Evginia is already the second highest rated female in New Zealand, and recently finished fourth equal in the North Island Championship (5.5/8). Going to the Olympiad will be a great learning experience for 11-year-old Sue Maroroa. She recently won the Waitakere Licensing Trust Junior Tournament with 5/5 and is the Auckland Girls Under 12 Champion. It promised to be a great event, what with the superb prize money (aided by generous sponsorship from the club) and excellent playing venue. Add to this the presence of IM John-Paul Wallace and visiting (from Coffs Harbour!) IM Zong-Yuan Zhao, and excitement and interest were assured... It all began routinely enough, with very few upsets in Round 1: a few scattered draws, and Richard Stokes (1306) beating Sam Molin (1786). Round 2, however, was more of an inkling of things to come, with three players rated over 2000 failing to win: Berezovski (2148) lost to Bogdanoski (1725), Capilitan (2068) lost to Baterowicz (1692) and Rose (2063) was held to a draw by Castor (1707). Most other results went with seedings, although the juniors started to wreak some havoc: Vaness Reid, Ben Harris and Edwin Wu all defeated players rated well above them. Heather Huddleston and Adrian Miranda repeated this feat in Round 3; but they were the only major upsets in this round. So the first day ended relatively routinely with 6 of the top 7 seeds leading on 3/3: it would all come down to the four games on the Sunday... Round 4 saw the top 3 seeds all win to share the lead on 4/4: Wallace beat Agulto in a longish game, while Zhao was more convincing over Camer and Samar defeated George Xie. Castor got to 3.5/4 by beating Pilja (1906), while the juniors struck again: Reid, Miranda and Wu all beat higher rated opponents, and Huddleston, Ben Harris, Angela Song and Justin Huang all drew with higher rated opponents. The interest, however, was at the top, where Round 5 saw the top two seeds battle out a long draw after Wallace could not convert a slight endgame advantage against Zhao. This enabled Samar to take the outright lead on 5/5 by beating Castor, but Wallace and Zhao on 4.5 were both close behind and ready to strike; and there were a heap of players on 4, including Stead (who upset Berezovski) and veteran Lloyd Fell (who stunned Adrian Rose). Come Round 6, and we thought Samar may finally get his comeuppance - instead, he beat Zhao in an outstanding game (see below)! So Raul was still leading on 6/6 going in to the last round, with only Wallace on 5.5 (after beating Fell) able to catch him. Tomek Rej's excellent win over Camer catapulted him into contention on 5/6, although a large group on 4.5 were close on his heels. One of them, Zhao, put an end to Tomek's dreams in the last round with a crushing victory, leaving him equal third with George Xie and Agulto. But the interest was on top board, where Wallace needed to beat Samar to catch him and win the $750 first prize outright. He tried hard as Black; but Samar was as solid as he had been the whole event. The practice of having State Championships, Club Championships and even strong weekend tournaments rated by FIDE has become increasingly popular within Australia over the last year or so. Already this year, more than a dozen Australian tournaments have been submitted for FIDE rating, helping to boost the number of Australian players with international ratings to just over 200. If you would like to see your State Championship or Club Championship FIDE rated, please contact the tournament organisers and let them know that you think it would be a good idea. In the future, the minimum FIDE rating will be reduced to 1800 and having tournaments internationally rated will become even more popular. Having a FIDE rating provides international recognition, and may allow entry into restricted tournaments. To have a tournament FIDE rated, organisers will need to ensure that there are at least four FIDE rated players entered into the tournament and they will be required to pay a FIDE rating fee of 50 to 100 Swiss Francs ($60 to $120). Organisers must also be aware that in addition to submitting the tournament results to their local ACF ratings officer, they must also submit a copy of the tournament results to the ACF's International Rating Officer. Tournament results must be reported to FIDE within a two week period after the tournament concludes. Reports which are submitted extremely late will attract an additional 100 Swiss Franc ($120) penalty. Current organisers of FIDE rated events are reminded to submit their tournament reports promptly to Gary Bekker, gbekker@mira.net, to avoid any late fees. Further information about forthcoming FIDE rated events within the Oceania zone, which includes Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Fiji, is available from the web site http://www.auschess.org.au/oceania/. I encourage all chess players and tournament organisers to consider having their events FIDE rated and look forward to seeing your names added to Australia's growing list of internationally ranked players. IA Gary Bekker ACF International Ratings Officer gbekker@mira.net CORRESPONDENCE MAL MURRELL Dear Graeme Keith Farrell had a stroke on Wednesday morning. He is paralyzed on his right side. He has very slight movement in his right foot and hand. The prognosis is good. He is expected to regain full movement. He is in Gosford Hospital, ward 17. Keith has made a lot of friends in the chess community and I am sure they will want to know how he is going. Keith has been involved in chess administration for the past 20 years at club and state level. He is currently in his second term as the NSWCA Country Representative. He was NSWCA webmaster (1999-2000). He has been on the committee of all the NSW central coast clubs and is currently Central Coast Leagues Chess Club President. I visited him last night. He seems to be in good spirits. He hasn't lost his sense of humour. He made a crack about travelling in circles to get to the phone to call the ambulance and dialing the phone with his phantom hand. Thinking the phone wasn't working he crawled to the back door and was found by his next door neighbour who called the ambulance. It would be nice if he arrives home to find some well wishing emails on his computer. Keith's E-mail Address is kwarekf@optusnet.com.au. Regards Mal Murrell GERHARD RADOSZTICS Dear chessfriend, I hope I dont trouble you with this mail. But this is the only address I know in your country. I am collecting chess autographs and old cards with chess motiv. Maybe you know some collector in your country and you can give me his email address or his postal address, so that I can get in connection with him. Kind regards AMICI SUMUS Gerhard Radosztics, Austria radoiccf@aon.at With very best wishes to all.
