Clive Lane 1 Hereford St Glebe NSW 2037 (02) 9660 0445 email: clivelane@bigpond.com IN THIS ISSUE Gold Coast Open, Australian Masters, World Youth Under 16 Olympiad, Box Hill Chess Club, Northern Territory Chess Association, next Saturday on SBS, Grand Prix, Noosa Open, Queensland Open Championships, Olympiad Appeal, Koala Open GOLD COAST OPEN I'm writing this bulletin with Wendy and I having just shared a convivial meal and glass or two of red with good friends Ian and Cathy Rogers, Gary Lane, Andrew Allen, Charles Zworestine and Lee Forace. The Gold Coast Open for the first time went a step down the Doeberl Cup path by splitting into 'Open' and 'Under 1600' sections. This experiment was a success with 26 players participating in the open section and 87 in the under 1600 section. The main advantage was that both events were very competitive virtually from round one. Ian Rogers, who lost to Michael Gluzman in round three, fell over the line to win the open section on 5.5/7 from Gary Lane, Stephen Solomon, Andrew Allen and Erik Teichmann all on 5/5. Erik Teichmann had a clear two pawn endgame advantage over Rogers in the final round although Rogers had the two bishops. Rogers hung on for the draw. Although Rogers said that he was very lucky to win, he did have to play the 2nd to 7th seeds. Final scores: Rogers 5.5/7 Lane, Solomon, Allen, Teichmann 5/7 Smerdon, Weller 4.5/7 Gluzman, Abylkassov, Kimura, G Oliver, Saavedra 4/7 26 players Casey Barnard won the under 1600 section with a score of 6.5/7. Final scores: Barnard 6.5/7 P Wongwichit, Stewart 6/7 Rakauskas, Hvistendahl 5.5/7 Stokes, Hart, Karita, Jempson, Van Der Meer, Harris, Chelebichanin 5/7 87 players The Fischer time control of 40 minutes plus 30 seconds a move was great for the players but not so good for the smooth timetabling of the event. For example, the Allen/Kimura game went for over 100 moves and held up the event for quite some time. It is quite likely that for the smooth running of a weekender a Fischer time control of 60 minutes plus 10 seconds a move is more appropriate. NORTHERN TERRITORY CHESS ASSOCIATION, ALICE SPRINGS Norm Taylor has pointed out that I was slightly over enthusiastic in my reporting on his current situation in Alice Springs. Norm has been cultivating and fostering good relations with the Batchelor Institute and the schools concerned. He has, with a friend Mike, a class on a Wed Lunchtime and on a Friday pm at Larapinda Primary. He will be starting next term at Ross Pk as a teacher's aid teaching chess and at Living Waters with lunchtime chess with a view in the long term to teaching it as an elective. He said he has an offer in at Batchelor, they are considering it and will, if there is a good response, employ him as a teacher of chess with his own workshops to teach the students who come from the communities to stay for either one or two weeks. Hopefully they will take the message to their communities then and maybe they will be able to have chess in the communities eventually. Hopefully that is an accurate portrayal of the Alice situation. NEXT SATURDAY ON SBS Pat Byrom advises that the FIDE Grand Prix, Dubai will be shown next Saturday on SBS at 5pm for one hour. ALEX WOHL IN ITALY Alex Wohl has finished 29th in a field of 93 in a strong tournament in Lido Estensi, Italy, gaining a few rating points.
