BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS 28 JULY TO 10 AUGUST Alex Wohl is now the official Australian representative for the upcoming British Championships which will be held in Paignton, Devon. Alex is currently playing in Ferrara, near Bologna, Italy. TASMANIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS 8-10 June 2002 This year's state titles, held in Burnie, attracted 19 players. Although the field was much weaker at the top than last year's, the middle sections of the draw were very competitive. After three rounds the defending champion Bonham, the 1998 champion Stubbs and Frame were leading. Frame was better out of the opening against Bonham and missed a combo which would have won a pawn, then in a favourable ending allowed a knight sac to force perpetual check ... which he avoided by walking into mate in 2 with 40 minutes left on his clock. Stubbs-Bonham in round 4 was a close game with chances for both sides but Black generally had the advantage and ultimately converted a theoretically drawn R+P vs R ending to gain a tournament-winning lead. Stubbs was a very worthy runner-up, while Chadwick and Slidziunas played well (the latter in spite of injury) and shared the pooled 3rd and U1700 prizes with Lazar Divkovic, who played indifferently due to illness, but was lucky enough to draw the bottom two seeds. Of the locals, Blaikie had a great tournament, winning the U1500 prize, and Cuff scored a fighting upset win over the rusty Frame, but the more fancied Andrew Todd and Phil Donnelly had disappointing results. The event was generally played in good spirit but there was a bit of aggro in the Harvey-Donnelly game, including an absence of handshakes and a brief verbal exchange arising from piece adjustment issues - a blunder shortly after spoiling an excellent game. Other players were distracted by the goings-on, and the pair have been warned to converse through the referee only should they be paired against each other in TCA events again. 6/6 Kevin Bonham (1849) 4.5 Mike Stubbs (1695) 4 John Slidziunas (UR), Charles Chadwick (1631), Lazar Divkovic (1626), John Blaikie (1490) 3.5 Nick Cuff (1478), Reg Harvey (1734) 3 Janice Martin (1410), Nigel Lewis (1540), Andrew Todd (1686), Nigel Frame (1808) 2.5 Graham Richards (1418), Phil Donnelly (1732), Cameron Harris (1597) 2 Tony Sturges (1391), Persa Divkovic (1066) 1.5 Zorka Radovanovic (UR), John Adams (UR) Full report on TCA website http://www.tased.edu.au/tasonline/taschess/ either now or in the near future. NORTHERN TERRITORY CHESS ASSOCIATION The NTCA, through their President Terry O'Neill from Darwin, has applied for affiliation with the ACF and this will be an agenda item at the ACF Council Meeting on Monday 24 June. If this is passed, for the first time the ACF will represent the whole of Australia. Terry advises that he and his team have been putting a lot into and enjoying the ACF Interstate Challenge http://www.auschess.org.au/interstate/istatemain.htm. The NT is one of the leading teams in the competition. I've also heard from Norm Taylor in Alice Springs. Norm teaches his own workshop at the Batchelor Institute, the tertiary school for indigenous people, both in Alice Springs and in the remote communities. He has also been given teacher aide status at his local primary school, Larapinta Primary, and hopes to start teaching at the other seven primary schools in Alice Springs shortly. Norm is also training people to teach his own chess course. In an article in the local newspaper, the Centralian Advocate, teacher Michael Jantzen said "I have seen definite improvements in the concentration spans and enhanced lateral thinking and analytical abilities of those students who have been playing". Ross Park Primary and Living Waters Primary have also introduced chess at lunchtime for their students. WORLD YOUTH UNDER 16 OLYMPIAD, 20 – 28 AUGUST 2002, KUALA LUMPUR Mona Lee will be finalising the Children's Olympiad teams and coaches over the next few days. This is your last chance to advise her that you would like to represent Australia in this event. Please contact Mona at if you are interested. I wonder why normal Accelerated Pairings, dividing the players into 8 sections were not used? The London tournaments of the 1970s used to attract over 200 players of all abilities. Six rounds were enough to sort out everybody and all players were eligible to win the top prize if they were good enough, or incorrectly rated or indeed completely unrated. Somebody who won twice against his rating could get to meet a top class opponent. Acceleration was always finished after round 4. One year there was the peculiar effect that a 2000 strength player led with 3/3. So what? He finished with the still terrific score of 4/6. The gms finished up leaders. One year there were 250 players and nobody reached 4/4.
