OLYMPIAD APPEAL (CREDIT CARD PAYMENT ACCEPTED) Once again I urge the Australian chess community to give our Olympiad team full support by donating to the Olympiad Appeal. Unlike some high profile sports, Australian chess receives absolutely no Federal Government funding. Unfortunately the ACF is not in a position to provide financial support to our team so they depend on your generosity. For the first time the ACF is able to offer credit card facilities. Please just provide your credit card number, expiry date, name of cardholder and amount of donation by email to the ACF Treasurer, Norm Greenwood at normg@bigpond.com.au. Alternatively please send your cheque payable to the Australian Chess Federation to Norm at PO Box 1840 Hornsby Westfield NSW 1635. 2003 AUSTRALIAN OPEN The 2003 Australian Open has been awarded to the NSWCA/Brian Jones partnership. It takes an enormous amount of Paul's time to make it that way. Paul believes that the webpage could be better still with some assistance. If you are prepared to assist Paul with making the webpage even more interesting by giving some of your time each week, please email Paul at broekhuysep@hotmail.com. 2002 BOX HILL CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT - TREVOR STANNING One hundred and twenty-seven players have participated in the Box Hill Chess Club Championship for 2002. Eleven players with FIDE ratings over 2000 entered for the Championship. Three of these became Club members for the first time to play in the event. Darryl Johansen has a GM title and has won many Australian events; Mirko Rujevic gained an IM title recently; and Scott Wastney comes with a New Zealand title to his name. A year ago the Box Hill Chess Club was missing a top echelon of players who could provide an on-going challenge to juniors John Nemeth, Sam Chow, Domagoj Dragicevic and Denis Bourmistrov. In 2002, we certainly have that top echelon present. However, the big story of the tournament is that junior Denis Bourmistrov defeated seed #1, drew with seeds #2 and 4, and defeated seed #5. What next Denis? Do you want us to work to have some of the Super GMs present? An exciting final evening saw Michael Gluzman defeat his round 9 opponent, Ascaro Pecori, and Denis Bourmistrov draw with his opponent Scott Wastney. Michael and Denis have tied on 7.5/9 and will need to play-off for the Championship title. Equal third, on 7/9, were Mirko Rujevic and Darryl Johansen. Scott Wastney was 4th on 6.5/7. Nine other players with FIDE ratings in excess of 2000 finished out of the placings; these included Vic Kildisas, Milenko Lojanica, John Nemeth, David Small, Marcus Raine, Domagoj Dragicevic, John Nemeth, Mike Woodhams, and Sam Low. The organisers of the event experimented with an interesting approach to acceleration of pairings in a large tournament. All players in the top half of the draw are given a permanent bonus of 2 points in the cross-table right from round 1. This has the deliberate effect of ensuring that Swiss Perfect pairs players in top half against each other and players in the bottom half against each other; in essence, a Division A and a Division B. After a few rounds, the better performed players in Division B started to be paired against the lower ranked in Division A. One benefit is automatically avoidance of the undesirable games where there is a rating difference of 600+. A second benefit is that Division B top performers are able to score 6 or even 6.5 points out of 9 rounds, thus making the Division B results much more reliable for prize money distribution. Division B players cannot win Division A prizes as a condition of entry to the tournament. For the statistically inclined, the midpoint of the ratings cross-table was Rowan Fell on 1402. Four juniors used the event as a tune-up for their proposed journey to the World Junior later this year. They were Ruperto Lugo, Michelle Lee, Andjelija Zivanovic, and Denis Bourmistrov. The Club appreciates the effort by Gerrit Hartland to manage such a large tournament as DOP, and Phillip O'Connor's pairings and web-site at http://www.boxhillchess.org.au Full details of the tournament appear at the web-site, selected annotated games, and all games played. WORLD JUNIOR BOYS AND GIRLS UNDER 20 CHAMPIONSHIPS These will be held in India, probably in September or October. More details soon. DOROTHY DIBLEY SHIELD - CAROL HOLMES Round 1 of the 2002 Dorothy Dibley Competition was played on Sunday 19/5/2002. The New South Wales team continued the way they ended last year (when they won the competition by a record margin) by defeating Victoria 9.5 to 0.5 Unfortunately Victoria could not field a full team of 10 players (5 Women & 5 Girls) and conceded 4 points on forfeit (2 on the Women's boards & 2 on the Girls' boards). The NSW Girl's scored 5-0 & the Women 4.5 ACT narrowly defeated Queensland 5.5 to 4.5 with the ACT Girls winning 4-1 and the Queensland Women winning 3.5-1.5 South Australia and Western Australia had a 5-all draw (SA won the top 2 Women's Boards, with WA taking the next 3, with SA taking out the Girl's 3-2). The next round has been split, with Victoria v ACT and WA v NSW playing on Sunday June 16 and Queensland v SA on June 23. Maybe some of the members of the State Associations can help out with organising and helping on the day in some capacity. (e.g. helping on the 'phone, making moves, etc.). 2002 GRAND PRIX Organiser: Norm Braybrooke 19 Trafalgar Drive Kippa-Ring 4021 Email . This programme is ideal for all club organisers for tournaments of all standards. It is particularly useful for the efficient running of events with large numbers of competitors where rounds need to follow on quickly, one after the other. It is also very useful for quickly producing all necessary records. Swiss Perfect has also helped the ratings officers in their task of efficiently producing ratings lists. There is a reduction in the admin fee for tournaments submitted using Swiss Perfect. To date, 85 licences have been issued to states and clubs right around Australia. I estimate that there are around another 100 clubs in Australia that have not taken advantage of this offer. Even though some of these may be quite small, the Swiss Perfect programme would give clubs an important tool to enable them to increase their numbers. A reminder that the owner of Swiss Perfect, Robert Rozycki, has approved free use of relevant state licences by all schools in Australia. Australia: ACF. Robert Rozycki's Swiss Perfect website is at www.swissperfect.com CORRESPONDENCE ALEXANDER AICH Graeme, How we can promote Chess as a Sport has preoccupied me from time to time. Recently I found myself contemplating on what other sports do to promote themselves and get some publicity. I made a startling observation. I believe I have found a way to emulate other sports to make the world more aware of Chess. Other sports do it so why not Chess. I'm talking about nude calendars. It doesn't have to be the full Monty, just sufficiently erotically suggestive to stimulate a bit of interest. And Chess has the perfect motifs to make it a bit kinky. We have 6 pieces - King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight and Pawn. We could devote 2 months to each piece. Our models can be real chess players. A scantily dressed Ian Rogers holding a sceptre and wearing a crown perhaps. Or maybe John Paul Wallace sitting astride a magnificent steed with a thrusting lance. There must be someone out there with the necessary photographic and marketing skills to pull this off. Regards Alexander Aich
