From: "Graeme Gardiner" To: Subject: ACF Bulletin # 167 - 2 June 2002 Date: Sunday, 2 June 2002 6:52 PM ACF Bulletin # 167 - 2 June 2002 IN THIS ISSUE Federation Group Australian Masters, 2003 Australian Open, 2004 Australian Championships, Olympiad Selections, ACF Webpage, Publicity for Chess, Tasmanian Championships, 2002 Grand Prix, NSWCA Queen's Birthday Weekender, Adelaide Queen's Birthday Weekender, Correspondence. FEDERATION GROUP - AUSTRALIAN MASTERS The field is starting to solidify with confirmed entries; IM Gluzman, IM West, (IM) Rujevic, FM Teichmann, FM Kagan, FM Levi and FM Baron. Interest has been shown by a variety of players including IM Sandler, FM Canfell, WIM Caoili and others. We still need confirmation from 2 more non-Australian players to guarantee an IM norm event. Could interested parties please contact cordover@chessworld.com.au for details on conditions. $500 appearance fee for IMs not from Australia. Dates: July 1st - July 12th Venue: Reserve Bank of Australia, Collins St, Melbourne Prizes: 1st $1200, 2nd $700, 3rd $400 The final few spots in the tournament will be filled soon so if you are interested please apply within the next week. 2003 AUSTRALIAN OPEN I have heard officially from Gary Wastell that the Mt Buller people have advised that they will not now be able to host the upcoming Australian Open due to a redevelopment of the venue. They have assured Gary that they were not aware that this was likely to happen when they negotiated with him. Accordingly, I have recommended to the ACF Council that the event be awarded to the only other applicant, the NSWCA, whose proposal is to hold the event at the Penrith Panthers Leagues Club. The proposal was developed by Brian Jones. I hope to confirm this venue in next week's bulletin. 2004 AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS The ACF would appreciate bids for the 2004 Australian Championships. Please email the ACF Tournament Director, Michael Baron if you are interested in hosting/organising this important event. OLYMPIAD SELECTIONS It is recommended that candidates for selection involve themselves in the Adelaide, Burnie, The Gap, Taree, Dandenong, Sydney, Gold Coast and Noosa events over the next four weeks in their final opportunity to impress selectors. Nominations close on 28 June. ACF WEBPAGE The ACF webpage is operational again www.auschess.org.au/. PUBLICITY FOR CHESS It is always good to hear of publicity for chess. David Cordover advises that he organised a story that went to air on Friday evening on ABC Stateline in Victoria. The story went about 5 minutes. It said some great things about the educational benefits and kids in schools learning. It didn't really get into competitions or its state as a sport or not. There was some interview time with David, Robert Jamiesion (as his mentor), a maths teacher at a school who said some good things and kids who were quite good too. "When I play football I like to imagine that I am a pawn in defence of the goals." "It flexes my brain muscles." and other good things. As David says "Can never get enough TV coverage for chess!" 2002 TASMANIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS 8-10 JUNE The Tasmanian Championships are on next weekend. Regards, Paul Huver STEWART REUBEN It is not always made clear that there are Smith & Williamson British Championship events which are suitable for all players. The Championship itself is open to anybody 2360+, U-21 2320+. U-18 2280+, U-16 2240+, U-14 2200+, U-12 2120+, female 2120+. There are several championships for players U-16 to U8 and over 60. The Major Open is FIDE Rated but almost unique in being for players of less than im standard. There are also events lasting from one week to one day. Torquay is a marvellous resort and the playing hall for 1000 players is excellent. It takes place 28 July to 10 August 2002. There will probably be an international 17-26 August. The British is 11 rounds and the second one 10 rounds. An opportunity then to need only one more norm.
