From: Graeme Gardiner To: Paul Broekhuyse ; Paul Broekhuyse Subject: ACF Bulletin # 166 - 26 May 2002 Date: Tuesday, 28 May 2002 9:23 PM ACF Bulletin # 166 - 26 May 2002 IN THIS ISSUE Australian Open, British Championships, ACF Webpage, ACF Public Liability Insurance Policy, 2002 Grand Prix, The Gap Open, Correspondence. AUSTRALIAN OPEN, MT BULLER The venue for the upcoming Australian Open is in serious doubt. More on this next week. BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIPS Chris Depasquale has had to withdraw as Australia's official representative for the upcoming British Championships due to be held in Torquay, Devon from 28 July to 10 August. Do we have anyone else who would like to be considered as Australia's representative for this prestigious event? Please contact the ACF Selection coordinator Gary Bekker gbekker@mira.net if you are interested. ACF WEBPAGE The ACF webpage www.auschess.org.au has not been updated for the last week or so whilst Paul Broekhuyse's computer visits the computer doctor. I understand the webpage will be updated very shortly. ACF PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE POLICY I have been advised by Vicwide Insurance Brokers that the game-participation exclusion clause has been removed from the ACF umbrella public liability policy. So the ACF deal is very good in the current insurance climate, and is well worth consideration. Premiums for a full year for $10 million cover are: Clubs with 100 or more members: $277 Clubs with 50 to less than 100 members: $211 Clubs with less than 50 members: $150 The cover is renewable on 31 August each year; premiums for cover taken out now until 31.8.02 would be calculated pro rata. Full details from Chris Zuccala of Vicwide Insurance Brokers on (03) 9569 1569 or via email on vicbrok@bigpond.com. 2002 GRAND PRIX Organiser: Norm Braybrooke 19 Trafalgar Drive Kippa-Ring 4021 Email . Webpage http://crcchess.topcities.com/GP2002.html One new event this week, the Queensland Open Championships on 13/14 July. More events from WA and Victoria would be much appreciated. I understand from Denis Jessop that we are likely to receive details shortly of two GP events in Canberra, the ANU Open and Tuggeranong Vikings weekender. A reminder that we welcome details of each event for publication in this bulletin. Unlike previous years, the tournament will take place at the JA Robertson Assembly Hall of The Gap State High School. The Gap Open chess tournament has been a standard part of the Queensland chess calendar for over 20 years. It will feature 6 rounds played at the rate of 2 rounds per day. Entry fees will be $35 for entries received by Friday June 7th, with a late fee of $10 to apply thereafter. For the purposes of prizes players will be split into divisions of approximately 12 to 14; prizes of $200 and $100 will be awarded in each division. There will also be a Junior Cadets Tournament for children under 12. The Cadets tournament will be staged on the Sunday only (9 June). It will be a 7 rounds tournament from 10.30am to 3pm with about 30 mintes allotted per game. Entry fees are $10 plus $5 for additional family members. Entry forms and further details for The Gap Open, or the Junior Tournament, may be obtained by contacting our club secretary Stuart Wilson on 3366-5104, or sending an e-mail to the club at: ajtetl@aol.com. CORRESPONDENCE PETER HANNA I don't think the Doberl Cup has serious survival problems but if perceived as having, consideration could be given to rotating on a Canberra - Sydney - Melbourne axis. Sydney and Melbourne contestants, after having a taste on their home turf and liking may then follow the circuit. Maybe extensive billeting could take place to encourage out-of-towners. Like many other facets of life - must evolve to survive. Peter Hanna NICK GIBSON Graeme, Comet Hill primary school (based in Bendigo) have been hosting the country central zone event for 5 years now, and the event has finally started to snowball. The number of teams entered this year has reached 30, and the pressure from the primary graduates for a chess competition at secondary level has seen a secondary competition (with 8 teams) in the country zone for the first time. Regards Nick Gibson (comet hill teacher/chess coach/tournament director/organiser/arbiter/promotions officer!) MANOJ VISHNUVARDHAN Respected Sir, I Manoj, father of Masters Arjun and Gaurishankar, who are the defending British international chess champions, national champion and national record holder of India humbly send this proposal to you for your kind and immediate consideration for sponsorship of this budding brightest stars of India, are in a difficult phase in the crucial formative stage of their development to become the proud of the nation. Even after becoming national and international chess champions, they are not having a laptop and desk top computers, chess software, international advanced chess books and the sponsorship for expensive international-grand master’s chess training. Even in these kind difficulties, we have started the international master’s chess training at Bangalore by the international master Raja Ravi Shaker IM. And the boys are getting coaching for the forthcoming British chess championship at London and world championship at Greece in Oct 2002. Unfortunately we did'nt get any good sponsorship to continue the training. So far we only received some small donations by few good peoples and all our funds (for training fee, Rs 150 ($ usd 3) per hour per student average 4 hours a day) has been exhausted and the training as well as other things have been stuck up in Bangalore. Even though government of Kerala has given one lakh each cash award to Arjun and Gauri for the great success in British chess championship, but the children could not make use that money for their requirements like purchase of computers, chess software’s, book etc because we had to give the liabilities of that much amount to the travel agent and others for the last London trip as it was not sponsored by any side. Hence I request you to support these genius children’s by the way of part or full sponsorship, to grow up in your great label as world beaters and youngest Grandmasters of the entire world. Kindly see the following attachments of their profile and sponsor a trip for the childrens to Australia to participate in any upcoming junior chess championship (under 10, under 12 etc) to prove their talents. And they would like to be there in Australia to play chess and study there. If you sponsor they have a really good chances of winning world junior championship at Greece on Nov 2002 Waiting for your kind reply Yours Truly Manoj With very best wishes to all Graeme Gardiner President Australian Chess Federation 11 Hardys Road Mudgeeraba Queensland 4213 Phone +61 7 5530 5794 Mobile 0438 305797 Fax +61 7 5530 6959 Email ggardiner@auschess.org.au Chess - the Clever Sport!
