Depasquale needed a win to gain the IM title and launched a ferocious king side attack. Johansen maintained control of the position, gained counterplay on the queenside and eventually invaded down the c-file to win the game. On board three, FM Mirko Rujevic eventually gained control of the seventh rank and squares near FM Greg Canfell’s king to clinch victory and the IM title. Canfell will no doubt be disappointed, given his excellent performance earlier in the tournament and the fact that he only needed a draw to gain the IM title himself. IM Gary Lane defeated Brian Jones on board two and clinched second place, but that was not enough to prevent Brian Jones from gaining the FM title. Peter Green had a lengthy draw with FM Eddy Levi to also gain the FM title on count back ahead of an unlucky Lee Jones. Green finished only half a point ahead in the tiebreak. Lee Jones missed out on a FM title in similar circumstances at last year’s Zonal Championship. We can only wish Lee the best of luck at the next Oceanic Zonal Championship, which is likely to be held in Aukland, New Zealand, during late 2004 or early 2005. Leading Fijian players, Dr. Sanmogam Goundar and Damian Norris split the point allowing Manoj Kumar and Rajnesh Parmeshwar to catch them for a four-way tie for the best Fiji player. WIM Irina Berezina beat WFM Narelle Szuveges to win the women’s event. In the battle for the WIM title, Catherine Lip surprisingly agreed to a draw in an equal position, knowing that she needed a win to take the WIM title from Lane. The draw result secured second place, and the WIM title, for Nancy Lane. Catherine Lip will gain the WFM title. Congratulations to all. Thank you to Dr. Virgilio De Asa, President of the Fiji Chess Association, for his tremendous work in organising and coordinating the tournament. Our sincerest thanks also to Homecentres and the Warwick Fiji for sponsoring and hosting this magnificent Zonal Championship event. Best wishes to GM Johansen and WIM Berezina. I am sure they will do Oceania proud at the FIDE World Championship event next year. For full details and games go to Gary Bekker's Oceania site http://www.auschess.org.au/oceania/fzt.htm. REUNIFICATION OF WORLD CHESS Resolutions of May 6, 2002 on the Unification of the Chess World - All parties and persons present at the meeting of May 6, 2002, in Prague have expressed their willingness to support the process of unification of the Chess World. - This process accepts the main principle that FIDE is the custodian and owner of the World Chess Championship title and that there should be only one federation - FIDE - recognized by the IOC and the world of sports representing the Chess World. - The unification process has to lead to only one undisputed World Champion recognized by FIDE. - The professional chess world requires a professional management body to be constituted on the basis of a business plan, which will be submitted by Bessel Kok and to be discussed and agreed with the World Chess Foundation and the FIDE Presidential Board within 90 business days after May 6, 2002. On approval of the business plan, FIDE shall issue a license (excluding Einstein Group Pre-unification events) to this body to manage professional chess as a profitable business. - FIDE supports the principles of unity plan (Annex A) presented by Bessel Kok and will cooperate to help with the acceptance of the principles on which the unity plan is based and the implementation thereof, by all players concerned, including the FIDE World Champion, and all organizers involved. - All parties and persons present agree to the principles put forward during the meeting with respect to the post-unification World Championship system. - All parties and persons present at the meeting of May 6, 2002 in Prague have agreed that they will do their utmost to achieve the unification of the Chess World. Made this day in Prague, May 6, 2002 Signed by: H.E.Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, FIDE President Bessel Kok Garry Kasparov Vladimir Kramnik Yasser Seirawan Alexey Orlov, President World Chess Foundation Other Grandmasters Prague Unity Plan: This Annex A document explains the plan to unify the chess world. Before discussing the unity plan, we must all realise that the current situation in the chess world makes it virtually impossible to offer a plan that will fully satisfy all interested parties, from FIDE, Vladimir Kramnik and Einstein TV (ETV), Garry Kasparov, the rank and file World's grandmasters and the Chess Commissioners Office for the First Cycle. Contracts have been signed, sponsors have made their commitments and the calendar of chess events does not encourage the staging of many and varied classical chess events to create a FIDE Classical Chess Champion. The plan for the First Cycle should be economical, efficient, marketable and reasonably acceptable to the world's chess players and fans. While the First Cycle is being staged, a firm agreement for the Second Cycle is agreed and its implementation and funding must begin as soon as possible. Currently, Vladimir Kramnik and ETV have embarked on a cycle that will stage a tournament in Dortmund with seven top grandmasters and the German Champion GM Christopher Lutz. The Dortmund winner is to play Vladimir Kramnik in a match for the Classical Chess World Championship. We all realise that four top ten players are missing from the ETV cycle: Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand, Ruslan Ponomariov and Vassily Ivanchuk. Unity Plan: Although it would certainly be preferable to include all top 10 players in the First Cycle, timing and existing commitments and contracts appear to make that impossible. In the given circumstances and in the interest of the future of chess we will have to accept that the unity plan is far from perfect. The Dortmund winner will play the Classical World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik and the present FIDE World Champion Ruslan Ponomariov will play Garry Kasparov, the current World's number one rated player. The two match winners will play a reunification Classical Chess World Championship match in October/November 2003. The unity plan brings about a single unified Classical World Chess Champion within a one and a half year period. That opens the doors to a new World Chess Championship cycle inclusive of all the top chess players in the world. We realise that cooperation and support of all parties is necessary and that by setting aside personal interests we can achieve this goal. 2002 GRAND PRIX Organiser: Norm Braybrooke 19 Trafalgar Drive Kippa-Ring 4021 Email . Unfortunately I do not receive the magazine but assume from Paul's article that the magazine claimed that the clash of Cups was intentional. Those with a memory will recall that all this was discussed intensively three years ago. The only reason for the Sydney Easter Cup is that it is totally ridiculous to leave a city of four million people, of high ethnic content, with no chess over a four-day holiday - it has absolutely nothing to do with Canberra and nothing was targeted. As a new competitor I rebelled against this travesty. Go to Canberra I was told -- oh yeah great -- and what do I tell my young son expecting a decent parent, I could not be so selfish. This is the reason why the SEC is only held on the Saturday and Monday -- to allow for family life, we receive much positive response to this. As well it is ridiculous to expect people to cough up for travel, accommodation and entry fees when like myself they are still finding their legs -- so they are neglected. What other sport in Sydney does not have a competition over Easter -- name one!!! If blame must be attributed aim it at me not Bob Keast nor the N.S.W. Association, Bob just happens to be president (or secretary) of the Canterbury Bankstown Leagues Club Chess Club. Bob saw at the first SEC that the demand existed and being the nice and responsible guy that he is he fulfilled his responsibilities as the Presidnet of the NSW Chess Assoc. and became director of play. It was the pleasant memories our members had of the first SEC two years ago that drove us to push on, just as our highly successful 2002 competition will drive us to strive even harder next year, my goal is seventy players. Another travesty is that country N.S.W. players cannot be expected to compete in the so-called N.S.W. State Championships. How can they be expected to travel to Sydney weekly for a few months on end, my memory is of almost the exact same faces of the regular Sydney comps. This comp. should held over the Easter break when they come once only with all the associated disruption and expenses. The SEC's success points to a highly successful Easter State Championship. In chess I may be only to see a few moves ahead but even Blind Freddy can see the necessity of chess in Sydney over Easter and a larger state championship. Concerning Grand Prix registration, we wanted such so that players are not disadvantaged by attending SEC but it was out of concern for the long term viability of the Doeberl that the N.S.W.Assoc. decided against such status for the SEC.. Look at it this way, the City of Sydney currently being held in Sydney loses about half of it's entry fees in weekly venue rental, the SEC paid nothing, as well we were subsidised by the Leagues club so it was an excellent chance for Sydney players to get value for money in a delightful venue, and we could go home to our families every night! What better advertisement for chess could there be. Concerning Grandmaster competing at Canterbury Leagues Club for $250 yes you may laugh, but I have rejected offers of sponsorship of a $1,000 first prize so that we do not take players away from the Doeberl. If this issue becomes nasty I will put on the $1000 first prize -- but why don't you just realize that we must be doing something right to get nine players over 2000 rating in spite of the Doeberl offering thousands. What I found amazing was the good vibes in spite of a player having a harsh judgment against him -- and it was capped off with an excellent, enjoyable lightning comp. on the final night.
