You can view one of his victories in Peter Parr's SMH column http://www.auschess.org.au/columns/columns.htm. Robert Keast 0417497258. robert.keast@didata.com.au. CORRESPONDENCE Hiya Graeme, I am writing this as my first contribution to the Chess Community in Australia. I have read the article and rebuttals regarding the need to develop a new constitution and that we need to have people whose sole responsibility is to the overall good of Australian Chess and not to any particular State. I have to say that this situation can lead to either a team of people that lead the Australian Chess Community into the future with swords glowing and songs being sung of those valiant or will lead to less than favourable dealings in the back alleys. By this I mean that to have an organization that is run solely for the good of the Community (Chess) as a whole is in itself the grand view. To have a group of people dedicated to lead us forward and have the best interests at heart, is what we all would like. Unfortunately, humankind is not that practical and I believe that the States would suffer because of it. For example, A major Chess Tournament is coming to Australia, part of the International Association and requires the ACF to prepare all the facilities etc for the event. The members of the ACF would obviously want to host the Tournament in a very visible location which means that it would be in either Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and I strongly believe that it would be held on the Eastern Shore. This is great but who is going to host it? The responsibility is huge and the liaison between the organisers and the host facility including accommodation etc can be and normally is a day to day running which deserves face to face negotiation. Who will run it? If the ACF is run by people that have no affiliation to the States then there is no reason for them to consider the States for the Tournament and therefore they would make the decision accordingly. Some will say that this is the best way but I disagree. Without the States there is no ACF; there is no reason to have a governing body as there is nothing to govern so the States are a very important and integral part of the whole. To ensure that both the States and the ACF are run with the best interests of all, I strongly believe that the following should be considered. 1) States run their respective organizations with their administration; this includes Junior Chess Leagues, The Australian Women's Chess League and the Correspondence Chess League of Australia. 2) These organizations HAVE to be affiliated to the ACF and are bound to follow the ACF laws and by-laws as set out by the ACF Commission. 3) These organizations are to elect a representative that speaks for and on behalf of their respective State or League and is appointed to the ACF Commission. 4) This representative, as a member of the ACF Commision, makes decisions for the ACF in regards to all matters and therefore is also representing their State in decisions being made. This is in no way a perfect solution but I believe it is the best way to work it. You have elected members of the organizations running their clubs and from them they go uplink. Clubs -> League -> State -> ACF. This will also ensure that matters like the Doeberl Cup and the Sydney Easter Cup are not contested in the manner they were. If there is to be a protest of the two running at the same time then the matter is taken to the ACF Commission for a ruling and their decision is final and binding and the matter is dealt with professionally. I hope that this novel I have just written was not long or fractured and you can all understand what I am saying. Regards Lee Akerman Tamworth With very best wishes to all.
