The event was won by Stuart Fancy with a perfect score of 7 points. Imelda Flores was second with 6 points. Gerard Awai & Andy Soriano were third equal with 5 points each. SYDNEY EASTER CUP - BOB KEAST 52 players competed in this event held at Canterbury Leagues Club, Belmore. (Numbers were up slightly from the 48 of two years ago and 28 more than last year when the event was held at Parramatta – which shows a definite need for organised chess in Sydney over the Easter break without detracting from the blue ribbon event - the Doeberl Cup held at the same time in Canberra) The Canterbury Leagues Club provided both an excellent rent-free venue (Blueberry Hill room) and a guaranteed 1st prize of $250, which allowed a total of 18 cash prizes. The field was a good cross-section of rating divisions with 8 players >2000 and (with the exception of only 2 players between 1800 and 2000) a fairly even rating spread including 10 juniors under 15 years. First place was shared by Romeo Capilitan and Mariusz Jarek finishing on 6.0/7.0 and 3rd place (top seed) Fred Flatow 5.5/7. The outstanding performer of the tournament was young Kostia Lubrasky (1527 on the December rating list) finishing with 4.5/7.0. (his average opponent strength 1924!). Finishing =11th outright - his performance made him eligible for the following divisional prizes – Best junior, U1600, =U1700 and =U1800. Also of note was visiting (holiday) player Marcus Getta (FIDE 2096) from Germany who graciously allowed us to change the tournament schedule at the 11th hour (well 10:30am actually) to play the 4th round on Saturday night instead of Monday morning (he had tickets to the Opera House and “generously!?” accepted a 0.5 bye for round 4 in exchange for allowing us all an early night before work on Tuesday). After a perfect start (3/3) he showed his true form (following his “imposed decision”) by deposing Ed Agulto from outright 1st place in round 5 and a round 6 draw with top seed Fred Flatow left him in contention for outright 1st in the last round. Mariusz Jakek (1851), showing his full potential, foiled Marcus’ attempt to claim victory by defeating him in a hard fought last round battle. I sincerely hope Marcus enjoyed his holiday (and chess) in Australia as much as we enjoyed his company and great chess. (many thanks - mate!) But at an eventful 40th Doeberl Cup this past Easter long weekend, The Smurf himself, International Master David Smerdon, proved this theory wrong... The tournament began predictably enough, with the top 2 seeds, GMs Rogers and Johansen, both winning their first three games, as did Smerdon (although IM Gary Lane drew his first game with Joel Harp). But then in Round 4, things really began to happen! The top two boards both produced fascinating encounters, with Lane an exchange ahead and winning against Smerdon before he overlooked an in-between check in a massive time scramble, and eventually found himself two pieces for a rook behind and lost. In the meantime, Johansen lost a tough ending to Rogers after missing a forced draw by perpetual check. This left Rogers and Smerdon on 4/4 and meeting, with Smerdon White, in Round 5... And what a game it was! Smerdon at first seemed to only be playing for a draw, content to simplify and swap queens into a drawish ending. Or was it really drawish? Rogers obviously didn't think so, as he sacrificed a whole rook for a potential mating attack, even though he was then only left with 2 bishops and a rook (and pawns, of course)! David had to return a piece to ward off the attack, but then proceeded to outplay Australia's Number 1 in superb fashion, first swapping off one of the dangerous bishops, then grinding down Ian to win the ending an exchange ahead by forcing through his last pawn! David received a standing ovation, the only one for the whole tournament, as a result of this victory - it is still not often Rogers is beaten in Australia... But Smerdon was not finished yet. When he beat Johansen as Black in the next round, not only had he defeated two GMs in the one day (has this been done before in Australia?), and practically guaranteed himself first place (which he sewed up with a last round draw with Brett Tindall); but he won in only 21 moves! All in all, a great tournament for the Smurf. Meanwhile, Rogers guaranteed himself second with a final round draw with Lane, while Johansen finished out of the money after he could not grind down Doug Hamilton and had to agree to a last round draw. It all makes the Olympiad selections even more interesting, doesn't it? Things had settled down by Round 3, with third seed Dimitry Partsi sharing the lead with three underrated players, Laura Moylan, Irianto Austriadi and the usual ever-present junior, Ilya Zvedeniouk. When Ilya overlooked a simple tactic and lost early to Partsi in Round 4, it seemed over for him, especially when Partsi then went on to defeat Moylan (who had beaten Austriadi in Round 4) to take the lead by himself on 5/5. But meanwhile Oscar Oendy had been sneaking through the field, having conceded only half a point; and he stunned Partsi to take the outright lead on 5.5 going in to the last round. He could not handle Ilya, however, whose convincing last round victory got him equal first place; he was joined there by Lojanica, who turned his tournament into the perfect Swiss gambit by beating Moylan and Partsi in the last two rounds to share first. This tournament was dominated by another junior, Victorian Shaun Ferris, who had taken the outright lead by Round 4 (with 4/4), had a rather lucky victory against Nathan Davidson in Round 5 in a messy time scramble to keep it, but thereafter never looked like letting it go. Forace never got close enough to play him after losing to John Baker in Round 5. A recent ex-junior, Arthur Huynh, was close enough when he played him in Round 6 (just half a point behind), but lost to put paid to his chances. Ferris had a last round draw with Tom McCoy to guarantee himself outright first with 6.5 out of 7, while Baker, McCoy and Huynh all shared second place on 5.5. The first zonal tournament was the Central Qld (South) championship, covering the Gladstone/Rockhampton/Emerald region, on 22 March. The event was incorporated in the Rockhampton City Games and qualified Tannum Sands State High School and Kin Kora State School (Gladstone) for the state finals. On 26/27 March there followed the first wave of the Greater Brisbane championships, from which first and second placegetters in A Grade would progress to the finals. The primary schools championships drew entries from 52 teams (230 players) in all grades, with Nundah State School (16/24) winning narrowly ahead of The Gap State (15½) – both schools go on to the finals. Indooroopilly State won B Grade and tied for first in C Grade with Fernvale State. In D Grade newcomers St Andrew’s Primary won with 20/24, a point clear of Wellers Hill State and Churchie. A Grade of the secondary schools championships was won convincingly by Churchie with 23½/24, despite the loss of David Smerdon on board 1 (now at university). Nudgee College and Kedron High tied for second, and were again tied after a playoff match, both then qualifying for the finals. Churchie also won B and C Grades, with Northside Christian College winning D. 20 teams (89 players) contested all grades. 2002 GRAND PRIX Organiser: Norm Braybrooke 19 Trafalgar Drive Kippa-Ring 4021 Email chessnut@windsor.net.au. THE GAP OPEN The Gap Chess Club, Brisbane has held an open chess tournament each year for more than 20 years. This year's event will be held on 8-10 June. For further details please contact Stuart Wilson . CORRESPONDENCE KERRY CORKER I would like to see an Australian Cities/towns Teams Championships played straight after the Australian schools teams championships for the following reasons: 1.A lot of our best juniors are already at the venue and save on transport. 2.Any school or business hosting the event gets another Australian Championship for the same cost. A few suggestions for format: 1.One GM per team maximum. 2.Two IMs per team maximum. 3.If three IMs then no GM. 4.One female per team minimum. 5.Two juniors per team minimum. 6.Eight players per team with two reserves allowed. 7.Players play in rating order: FIDE then ACF. 8.No grades to start with. The first year would be a round-robin or swiss if enough entries. 9.Top four boards to be FIDE rated. More if finances allow. 10.If no sponsor is found for the first year, $200 per team entry. 11.$1500 to the team finishing first. $200 to the team finishing second. 12.Teams to be city or town based but University or strong High-School teams are encouraged to enter. 13.Trophies only for board prizes to start with. 14.First year of competition losses covered by the ACF (see 16). In following years, host city/town/business/school to cover losses if any. 15.Competition to start in December 2003/2004. 16.For the first year I will underwrite losses up to and including $1,000 if most of the above-mentioned points are accepted. All points are negotiable of course. Why is such an event necessary? At the moment our good/aspiring players have the Zonal, the Australian Champs, and Doeberl Cup. This adds a fourth event to their calendar and sees teams chess for money in its initial stages. Of course the goal is a Bundesleague type event, but we have to start small. Kerry Corker PETER BENDER Hi Graeme, I love the idea of teams chess. Last year I had the opportunity of being interclub co-ordinator for the CAQ and the main thing that was brought home was the fragility of clubs in Qld. Most clubs have one or two staunch organisors and a handful of die hard players who may or may not play tournaments. It is my opinioin that in order to grow we need to bind clubs together with support mechanisms such as inter club tournaments and your idea could be a great vehicle. My only suggestion is to reduce the size of the teams to 2-3 players in each division as I feel that 80% of Qld clubs would not be able to field more than this amount of players, especially so if you go into divisions (which I think is another good idea). With smaller teams you get better atmosphere and more peer support to ensure the players don't drop out. I'd be happy to help with a Gold Coast team....we all know that it is from this region that the next IM will rise and are happy to take on all other teams.
