CHESS IS A SPORT For some years now, chess and bridge have been making similar pushes for inclusion as medal sports in the Olympic Games. An exhibition event for bridge was put on at Salt Lake City during the Winter Olympics. During the tournament, several Olympic officials visited the Hilton, where play took place. One of them, Marc Hodler, who spoke at the Sydney Olympics chess exhibition, has been leading the effort to help bridge gain a foothold in the Olympics. Hodler is a member of the Executive Board of the IOC. He has worked tirelessly to convince his colleagues that bridge belongs in the Olympics. "They think I'm a little crazy to press for that", he said, "and the people with the power to decide are not very favourable (to the idea)." Hodler said that if bridge is to join the Olympics, there are significant hurdles to overcome, not the least of which is the IOC rule which specifies that Winter Olympics sports must be played on ice or snow. He said there is another rule that once a city has been awarded the Games, no new events can be added for that year. That rule would seem to exclude bridge for many years into the future, considering that the Games have been awarded as far ahead as the summer of 2008 (Beijing). Hodler said, however, that a special committee of the IOC may soon consider adding another set of games - for indoor sports. That, he said, might allow the transfer of some sports from the Summer Games to relieve some of the pressure of organising competition for a growing number of athletes. Hodler said that the 2002 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia, drew more than 10,000 athletes, a nearly unmanageable number. By contrast, about 2,500 athletes showed up for the Salt Lake City Games. No matter what, Hodler said, he is not giving up. "We have made progress," he said. "The World Bridge Federation has been recognised (by the IOC) as a sports federation. That's a big step."
