From: "Graeme Gardiner" To: Subject: ACF Bulletin # 154 - 3 March 2002 Date: Sunday, March 03, 2002 8:46 ACF Bulletin # 154 - 3 March 2002 IN THIS ISSUE Olympiad Appeal, Weekly ACF Bulletin, Australian Chess Stamp, Chess Press Clippings, Australasian Chess Online, UNSW Invitational, South West Open, Hobart Labour Day weekender, Hervey Bay Open, Darling Downs Open, NZ Chess, 2002 Grand Prix, Doeberl Cup, Sydney Easter Cup, Oceanic Zonal, Swiss Perfect, Insurance Policy for states and clubs, Correspondence. OLYMPIAD APPEAL FOR BLED SLOVENIA 27 OCTOBER TO 13 NOVEMBER 2002 - PLEASE DONATE NOW This is Olympiad year. Once again I would very much like to hear from anyone who has the time to help with the ACF Olympiad Appeal. Our players not only deserve the support of the Australian chess community, I'm sure it means a lot to them to know that we are all behind them. It would be nice to launch the appeal with a few sizeable donations so please dig deep. Let's get the ball well and truly rolling. Donations will be acknowledged in this email bulletin unless omission is specifically requested. Donations may be sent to the ACF Treasurer Norm Greenwood Box 1840 Hornsby Westfield NSW 1635. Your support would really be appreciated. THE WEEKLY ACF EMAIL BULLETIN I have added quite a large number of email addresses to the ACF email database over the last 3-4 weeks. If you no longer wish to receive this weekly bulletin, please just email me at ggardiner@auschess.org.au and I'll remove your name. All back copies of the ACF Bulletin are available at http://www.auschess.org.au/bulletins/acfbt.htm. AUSTRALIAN CHESS STAMP - ROY LAWRENCE The CCLA has for some years (but very on and off) sought to have a chess motif stamp issued by Australia Post but to no avail. The ‘best’ response was one in 1997 saying that the suggestion met the stamp subject criteria and it would be added to list of possible future subjects. The emphasis on our approach has been correspondence chess, a natural we thought, but it is chess that we would like recognised as a sport as so many others have. We have a list of other countries that have issued chess stamps and even the Hutt province of West Aust has done so. According to the latest Stamp bulletin the program for special issues is full for 2002. Why not 2003? One possibility is to seek commemoration of Purdy’s Correspondence World Championship which started in 1953. Is ACF interested in trying again? Contact: Roy Lawrence rmlaw@ozemail.com.au CHESS PRESS CLIPPINGS I have several large files of chess press clippings. It seems to me that it would be helpful when presenting sponsorship and/or grant proposals to be able to include impressive folders of chess press clippings for perusal. I should therefore be grateful if interested parties could forward to me copies of press clippings held, and any future clippings. I will then forward copies to ACF Publicity Officer Ashley Rambukwella and ACF Sponsorship Chairman Peter Wallman. The clippings may also help me to present more interesting information in this bulletin. Please send the clippings to Graeme Gardiner 11 Hardys Road Mudgeeraba Qld 4213. AUSTRALASIAN CHESS ONLINE Australian players are invited to take part in a free, three month trial of this new online playing service, a joint initiative between the ACF, the NZ Chess Federation and US company GamesParlor. Please go to www.auschess.org (no .au) and follow the instructions there. There are over 20,000 US chess players registered for this service. I understand that the European Chess Union may soon be joining up. ACF Webmaster Paul Broekhuyse is promoting/managing the online service assisted by administrators Michael Baron, Matthew Sonter, Ronald Scott and James Mackintosh. CORRESPONDENCE BAS VAN RIEL Dear Chess player, Just a reminder that there is only one week to go before the Ballarat Begonia Chess tournament will be held, i.e. during the Labour Day weekend of 9-11 March. There is still time to register or to make up your mind to play. It promises to be a great tournament in terms of numbers as we have already more registrations than before at this stage, and we also have run out of all our pre-booked accommodation. However, we are trying to find alternative accommodation for those who still need it. But it probably will become a bit more difficult so close to the (long) weekend, as many additional visitors come to Ballarat for the Begonia Festival. In the mean time, a great variety of players have entered already, ranging from the likes of the two Australian grandmasters, Doug Hamilton, Greg Canfell etc, quite a few juniors, to the casual club-players. The use of the Fischer clock is a novelty in our tournament, while Craig's Hotel, across the road, will continue to support us with discount drinks and meals. Additional information can be found at our website: http://www.auschess.org.au/ballarat/bccindex.htm Please contact us for bookings or further queries. We hope to see you all. Regards Bas van Riel BRIAN JONES Graeme In reply to Stewart Reuben's email in #153. I am both a chess player and chess organiser. I favour a serious game which lasts only about four hours (or less) and I know others who agree with me. Maybe Stewart should listen more to the rank and file!
