Enquiries: Kevin Bonham k_bonham@tassie.net.au CORRESPONDENCE BILL JORDAN Graeme, After using an incremental time limit for the first time, I quite liked it. It seems an incremental time limit should be used whenever it's possible. I don't understand how FIDE came to choose 90 mins + 30 sec increment. Does anyone know how this decision came to be? My ideal incremental time limit would be a flat number of minutes per move. Given that players sometimes arrive late this is not practical, many people would lose on time on move 1. Since 1 hour is the traditional time someone has before they forfeit, a more natural limit seems 60mins + 60 sec increment. It doesn't seem logical to speed things up at move 60 (a la Torre), endings are just as difficult as middlegames, all moves should be equal. Arbitrary breaks at moves 40 and 60 should be removed not replaced. 90min + 30sec is too fast for one round a day. Either keep Aust Champs limits as they are or make the Aust Champs a 2 or 3 rounds a day round robin. I have heard that FIDE wants to introduce 40/40, then 20 minutes to finish. This is too close to rapid chess. We should have lightning, rapid and tournament, not lightning, rapid and rapid. Different people like different limits. With very best wishes to all.
