ACF SPONSORSHIP COMMITTEE In a concerted effort to find a national sponsor for Australian chess, a sponsorship committee has been formed under the leadership of former ACF President, Peter Wallman. All members of the committee reside in Sydney. Peter Wallman, Ashley Rambukwella, Adam Spencer, Peter Koshnitsky, John Baker, Ewa Soltysik, Jason Lyons. An Olympiad Appeal is conducted bi-annually to provide funds for the Australian Men's and Women's teams to travel to the FIDE Chess Olympiad. Typically appeals raise about $500-$600 per player. Following discussion amongst the chess community, a proposal has been developed thus: That players be given an option, at the time of entering a tournament, to donate the sum of 20% of any prize winnings in that tournament to the 2002 Olympiad Appeal. This proposal requires the co-operation of tournament organisers. It is of course at the total discretion of individual players whether or not they donate a portion of their winnings to the Appeal. It is anticipated that many players would consent to such a contribution. The majority of players are at your tournament for love, not money. Earning a prize is recognition of a tournament well played, making players inclined toward a measure of philanthropy. Players are of course free to donate to the Appeal in the usual manner [details of this will be provided by the ACF in coming weeks]. If accepted, organisers would include an option on all entry forms [at the venue, mail-outs, and other advertising] to this effect. The only burden placed on organisers would be to determine which prize-winners had selected this option. This proposal in no way affects the budget of your tournament. It is hoped that all tournament organisers would view this proposal in a favourable light. Please indicate your response to this proposal as soon as possible in an email addressed to both myself jasongraham@yahoo.com and ACF President Graeme Gardiner ggardiner@auschess.org.au. For those tournaments with entry forms already prepared, we would ask that you request player's consent for such a donation at the venue prior to the commencement of your tournament [e.g. at registration]. Best wishes for a successful tournament, Jason Graham Lyons: actor, chess tutor, english & drama teacher, camp leader, theatre manager, sports addict. Note: The Gold Coast Chess Club committee has just approved a donation of $300 to the appeal. If you wish to make a donation to the appeal, please email Graeme Gardiner on ggardiner@auschess.org.au. Donations may be sent to the ACF Treasurer, Norm Greenwood at Box 1840 Hornsby Westfield NSW 1635. The names are needed for the Australasian Chess Online database, so that players are able to register for the service. Without the names, players can only register as "guests", which limits their enjoyment of the service. Paul has the Queensland list and expects to have the NSW list soon, but needs the other state's lists urgently. Please email the lists (numbered if possible) to Paul at rebpab@bigpond.com. In the past I have requested assistance with sourcing a reliable internet audio hook up method involving around 8-10 remote locations. I thank those who have made suggestions but we are still looking for a reliable internet alternative to the phone option. If anyone can assist with this it would be most appreciated.
