Late last year he took on the position of Treasurer of Eastern Region Tennis Inc. which is the largest suburban tennis association in Melbourne. This gives him a new and challenging interest but does cut back on his available time. I would like to thank Robert most sincerely for carrying out this onerous and in some ways thankless task diligently and in a committed and impartial manner. I'm pleased to say that Gary Bekker has agreed to take on the task of ACF Selection Coordinator. Shortly, we will announce the procedures for 2002 Olympiad selections. In this regard I'm a little disappointed that I have had no offers of assistance with the 2002 Olympiad Appeal, either financial or administrative/promotional. Some support would be very much appreciated. AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS PLAY OFF JOHANSEN V SPECK The organisers of the recent Australian Championships in Melbourne have been offered first refusal for putting on this four game play off match. If there are any others interested in bidding for the play off, please email me ggardiner@auschess.org.au as soon as possible but certainly by the end of February. ACF WEBPAGE Paul Broekhuyse has been doing great work with the ACF webpage http://www.auschess.org.au/ which is looking particularly dynamic at present. A Swedish site is calling for nominations for the world's best webpage. Check it out http://www.schacknyheter.com/chessaward/english/index.shtml. SWISS PERFECT A reminder that the ACF is offering free Swiss Perfect computer pairings programme licences to all affiliated clubs. This programme is now widely used right around Australia for the administration of tournaments (from small to very large). Also, the ratings officers much prefer to receive the results in Swiss Perfect format via email attachment. So if your club does not have a licence, and you would like one, please contact me at ggardiner@auschess.org.au. You can view the Swiss Perfect webpage at www.swissperfect.com. The owner of Swiss Perfect, Robert Rozycki, has kindly offered free use of state licences to all schools in Australia. WORLD AND ASIAN JUNIOR SELECTIONS It is very gratifying to see such a large number of nominations especially for the Children's Olympiad which is a teams event. It is possible to put forward extra players in both individual and teams events, although the extra players do not normally receive the free accommodation and meals that selected players do. Brett Tindall sydneyacademy@iprimus.com.au is receiving nominations for the various junior events to be held this year. Please email Brett immediately if you wish to be considered for any of the tournaments listed, especially the Asian age events which are coming up very soon. I LIKE the Fide control. The only improvement I would support is Torre's suggestion of all in 60 plus a 1 minute increment till move 60, then 30 seconds. I have been playing under the FIDE control a lot lately and am quite used to it. Actually I now feel restless and bored when playing a longer control like in Hastings. That was 40 in 2, 20 in 1 and something, I think 30 to finish. The new FIDE control is more INTENSE. There is no time to 'settle in' no rest at move 40 or 60 and you need to think about things like bodily functions BEFORE you get to the increment. For those who think of chess as an intellectual exercise and like the easy life the FIDE control is not suitable. If, on the other hand you prefer to think of chess as a sport and a merciless struggle you will like the new control. Finally I would like to share a few tips for surviving in this more combatative environment. 1. Prepare well for your game. Think about what openings you might face and how you are going to respond. DON'T think for 30 minutes about open or closed Sicilian on move 2 or 3. You will need all the time you can get in the middlegame. 2. Train playing some 30 second a move games so you get a 'feel' for roughly how long 30 seconds is. Looking at the clock every 5 seconds might be hilarious for the spectators but does nothing for your concentration. 3. Last but not least, It is NOT possible to run to the toilet, take a leak and return to the board in 30 seconds. Atb, Alex With very best wishes to all.
