You reported: The following motion was defeated: "That this National Conference agrees in principle to the replacing of the ACF Council with an ACF Commission comprising the ACF President and eight Commissioners elected by the National Conference and requests that the Council supplies the necessary constitutional amendments to the next National Conference to give effect to this resolution". I sincerely hope that those who defeated this motion do not weaken and change their votes in future. Chess in Australia must be organised democratically, and just remain under the control of the members. Through our state associations we must have the power to get rid of any official or group of officials if they are not doing what we want done. The officials must be elected by, and answerable to, specific groups of members. The present state system achieves this, but a system involving "commissioners" would not, unless there were one commissioner representing, and elected by, the players in each state. 2. Bill Gletsos wrote: "Jason states there is no transparency and we don't know how it works and then in the next paragraph says that he doesn't want to read how the Glicko system works and does not want to be insulted for his seeming ignorance. The complete condradiction of logic in those statements just floors me. It also makes it virtually impossible to have an intelligent discussion". I hope the Bulletin will not continue to be used for such personal attacks. This one is completely off the rails, as it is this statement by Bill, not the one by Jason, that is lacking in logic. It is perfectly reasonable for Jason to want a system that can be understood by all and sundry, even if at the present time he has no desire or need to ensure that he understands it himself. One day, when it seems that something weird has happened to his rating, he may see a need to go into it, and when that happens the system should be readily understandable. It is also reasonable for him to criticise the Glicko system on these grounds without having to know anything more about it, and for him to object to being insulted for his "ignorance" if at present he sees no personal need to understand the details of the Glicko system. There was no contradiction of logic in what Jason wrote; it all made good sense. I am happy with the Glicko system and do not know either Jason or Bill personally, so I have no axe to grind. I just do not like to see someone being pilloried in public unfairly. John Riches. (Norwood Chess Club, South Australia) SIMON FITZPATRICK Congratulations to Nick Speck who should have got to that level years ago. Now let's see what he can do in the playoff. Is that an IM norm for Nick? VLADIMIR FELDMAN (I took these notes from Vladimir during the Australian Juniors) Time Controls: Vladimir prefers the old system of 40/120, 20/60 followed by increments. He maintains that the more experienced players find it harder to adjust to the new controls. He also says that the first time control is important because it makes it easier to manage time. Ratings System: Vladimir is unhappy with the change to the Glicko system because the players were not consulted and players are not able to calculate their own rating. He believes that Swiss Perfect should be used for calculating ratings and also that once a system has been decided upon, the ACF should settle on the system and not change it. With very best wishes for 2002.
