AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIPS These were held at Anglican Church Grammar School, Brisbane this weekend and were an outstanding success. Since inception in December 1998 the standard has probably risen by about 200-300 rating points per player. Girls Primary 1st Worongary (Qld) 16/20, 2nd Essex Heights (Vic) 13.5, 3rd Chapman (ACT) 12. Open Primary 1st Essex Heights (Vic) 14/20, 2nd St Peters (SA) 13.5, 3rd The Gap (Qld) 11. Girls High 1st PLC (Vic) 17.5/24, 2nd Abbotsleigh (NSW) 15.5, 3rd St Stephens (Qld) 13. Open High 1st Anglican Church Grammar (ACGS) (Qld) 15.5/20, 2nd Sydney Grammar (NSW) 14.5, 3rd University High (Vic) 14. The tussle for the open high schools event was an outstanding competition. At the end of the first day University High looked the likely winners having defeated ACGS 2.5-1.5. Radford (ACT) caused a stir by holding Sydney Grammar to 2-2. Early today Sydney Grammar unexpectedly defeated University High 3-1 to set up a final round clash between ACGS and Sydney Grammar who were equal on points. Smerdon (ACGS) defeated Lip on board one, McPhee (ACGS) defeated Li on board four, Chan (Sydney Grammar) defeated Olm-Milligan on board three leaving the Davidovici (ACGS) v Tian game to decide matters. In the time scramble Tian had slightly the better of a drawish ending but could not convert when Davidovici defended very accurately for the draw to retain the title. Congratulations to Churchie on their win. David Smerdon scored 5/5 as did Chan. Here is the critical penultimate round game between Michael Lip and Denis Bourmistrov. For once the stories were run early in the news and ran for two minutes rather than the usual 40 seconds. ABC Radio also ran the story around the nation. ABC News Radio followed this up by inviting listeners to email their thoughts on whether chess is or is not a sport. So please email newsradio@your.abc.net.au and let them know why chess should be treated as a sport in Australia. This needs to be done immediately to have any effect. FAIRFIELD SUMMER CUP 1st= Stephen Solomon, John-Paul Wallace 5.5 3rd= Gary Lane, Tim Reilly 5 5th-8th Stanislav Berezovski, Angelito Camer, Tomek Rej, Ian Rogers 4.5 9th-15th Romeo Capilitan, Ilija Ilic, Haris Muljadi, Ronald Scott, Duncan Tidswell, James Watson, George Xie 4 56 players, 6 rounds In this tournament, a little piece of history was created: for the first time ever, after many years of trying, Stephen Solomon defeated Ian Rogers! This was in their Round 5 game, and Stephen went on to share first place with John-Paul Wallace after they drew their individual last round game. In a king and pawn ending with several pawns each, Wally and Solo took the safe option of agreeing to a draw when down to their last five minutes each. They thus each received $650, relegating Gary Lane and Tim Reilly to equal third after Lane won their individual game in Round 4, but lost to Wallace in Round 5. In another outstanding result, junior Tomek Rej drew with Grandmaster Ian Rogers; well done Tomek...
