Entry fees and prize lists are likely to be finalised this week. The committee is confident it will offer prize lists and a scale of entry fees that will compare well with those of previous championships. A substantial discount is likely to be offered to those who enter early. Hopefully, the committee will have all entry fees, deadlines and prize lists finalised in time for inclusion in next week’s bulletin. Entry forms (contained in the championships program) are scheduled to be sent in bundles to numerous distribution points around Australia during the next fortnight. A list of those distribution points should be included in next week’s ACF email bulletin. It should include all the major chess centres, chess retailers etc. (Thanks to those States that have provided the requested addresses for suitable distribution points and people. Reminder to those States yet to do so.) Accommodation options at these two hotels will be detailed in the tournament program, to be distributed to all states at the end of October. Although the two hotels have different names and street addresses, they are actually in the same building. The Swanston Hotel has a higher rating than the Welcome Hotel. Both hotels are about 200 metres from the Town Hall. Inquiries and bookings can be made by contacting the hotels as follows: All Seasons Premier Swanston Hotel 195 Swanston Street, Melbourne Phone 03 9663 4711 (reservations-only local call rate number 1300 650 315) fax 03 9663 8191 email swanston@allseasonsmelb.com.au All Seasons Welcome Hotel 265 Little Bourke Street, Melbourne Phone 03 9639 0555 (reservations-only local call rate number 1300 654 966) fax 03 9639 1179 email welcome@allseasons-mel.com.au More next week. WORLD JUNIOR UNDER 10 TO UNDER 18 CHAMPIONSHIPS Best of luck to our whole team in the World Juniors which commences in Oropesa Del Mar, Spain this evening Australian time. I understand that in addition to Michelle Lee, Peter Jovanovic has also withdrawn from the team. The official webpage is at www.worldyouthfestival2001.com NEWS FROM ZONG YUAN ZHAO Hello Everybody, I had some success at last in Iceland! I managed to win an eight player round robin in rapid play. I finished with 6.5/7 which I´am pleased with. It wasn´t that strong a tournament but nevertheless it was quite exciting as I think I managed to save about 3 three lost positions!! Tomorrow I´m leaving the Land of Ice and Fire and going to Oropesa via London. Iceland was one of the most unique places I have ever visited and very interesting too. You get about four different types of weather each day including snow, rain, wind sunshine, overcast etc. I have visited the famous Blue Lagoon and the Waterfall and many other famous places around Reyjavik. That´s all for now but hopefully I can continue the good form to Oropesa. Best wishes to all, Zong-Yuan Zhao GRAND PRIX - NORM BRAYBROOKE (Norm's email address is chessnut@windsor.net.au and webpage http://crcchess.topcities.com/GP2001.htm) The progress scores after 32 tournaments have now been posted. For the Queenslanders amongst the leaders there are no chances to improve without interstate travel. NSW players have four more tournaments, VIC players have two whilst SA and TAS have one each in their home states. That is eight more chances for GP points. The following refers to first place only. Open: Stephen Solomon leads but could be overtaken by Darryl Johansen. John Paul Wallace can pick up "margin points" (J-P already has five GP points scoring results but could gain 5.5 points with better results in remaining tournaments). Under 2000: Kerry Stead seems to have this sewn up. Under 1600: Toshi Kimura has a slender lead. Lee Forace, Brendon Norman, Oscar Hellman and Romeo Capitilan have four NSW tournaments to make up ground. Perhaps they will spoil each others chances of catching Toshi . Junior: David Smerdon has a healthy lead and nearest rivals have only "margin" points on offer. Women: Catherine Lip is in a similar position to David Smerdon. Unrated: Chris Yu looks 'home and hosed'. Tournament Organisers, please submit your GP 2002 tournaments details. Just a reminder that we welcome more details of Grand Prix events for publication in this bulletin. May I encourage clubs and states to start planning their 2002 calendars now and let's see if we can come up with a record number of events for 2002. 9/10 Feb Newcastle Open Cat 2 George Lithgow 02 4943 3862 george.lithgow@bigpond.com 29 Mar to 1 Apl Doeberl Cup ACT Cat 3 Roger McCart 02 6251 6190 roger.mccart@anu.edu.au 22/23 June Gold Coast Open QLD Cat 3 Graeme Gardiner 07 5530 5794 ggardiner@auschess.org.au 10/11 August Coal City Open Cat 2 George Lithgow 02 4943 3862 george.lithgow@bigpond.com 21/22 Sept Gold Coast Classic QLD Cat 3 Graeme Gardiner 07 5530 5794 ggardiner@auschess.org.au It would be appreciated if states avoided two Grand Prix events being run on the same weekend in the same state. We are hopeful that Western Australia might enter several events in 2002 to give WA players an equal chance of winning prizes. TRIBUTE TO RATINGS OFFICERS The ACF is indebted to the national and state ratings officers who do a very fine voluntary job to what is a selfless task. I understand that the job requires at least between 15 and 30 hours work per quarter which is a significant commitment for busy people. We thank the following ratings officers: NSW - Steve Carratt (scarratt@bigpond.net.au) QLD - Mike Finch (100351.173@compuserve.com) TAS - David Christian (chri@trump.net.au) VIC - Milic Sucevic (milic@chessnet.com.au) WA - Fred Maris (chesssupplies@gidgenet.com.au) SA - Bernard Rigo (laind@connect.net.au) ACT - Jeff Wood (Jeff.Wood@cmis.CSIRO.AU) NT - Norm Taylor (oscarnorm@austarnet.com.au) ACF - Bill Gletsos (76702.3153@compuserve.com) and Graham Saint (amgray@matra.com.au) Basically the state ratings officers have to make sure all the tournaments submitted to the ACF ratings officers have the following: Player ID numbers for the participants. The type of tournament (Normal or rapid). Date the tournament ended. They need to add new players to the ACF master file with information such as: Surname, First name, State, Date of Birth, Sex, Club. They also need to amend player details where required and to avoid duplicates. The cutoff period for the next ratings list is 31 October. AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIPS 15/16 DECEMBER 2001 This weekend the Queensland Finals were held and the qualifiers were Open High: Anglican Church Grammar School. Open Primary: Worongary State School. The Queensland Girls Finalists had already been decided as follows: High: Saint Stephens College. Primary: Worongary State School. Ian Murray would like to know the qualifiers from other states as soon as they come to hand. At the recent ACF Council Meeting the following motion was passed: If the Girls Championships and the Open Championships are held on the same date or dates, a player shall not play for a team in both events. Full details were given in last week's bulletin number 136 http://www.auschess.org.au/bulletins/acfb136.htm QUEENSLAND VETERANS AND DISABLED CHAMPIONSHIPS - WENDY TERRY Just a reminder that the Queensland Veterans and Disabled Championships will take place next weekend. I have received twelve entries to date, with David Lovejoy being the top seed. David, of course, can win the tournament but cannot take the title, because he lives in Northern New South Wales. Don't forget entries close by 9:30am Saturday morning, 27th October, at Carina Leagues Club. So come along and enjoy a friendly well directed event. Please let me know if you intend to play. My new e-mail address is wterry@tectra.com.au or phone 07 3899 0485 and pay your entry fee at the venue.
