It will be unlikely that I will answer emails during this period and there probably won't be a bulletin next week. GOLD COAST CLASSIC 1st John Paul Wallace 6.5/7 ($700) 2nd= Stephen Solomon and Sean Karita 6/7 4th= David Smerdon, Michael Davidovici and Nik Stawski 5.5/7 7th= John Myers, Michael Lip, David Lovejoy, Sam Constantin and Anthony Lam 5/7 10 players on 4.5/7 including Andrew Allen and Rene Olthof 81 players The teams event worked very well. Entrants placed themselves into teams of four. Team points were based on ratings points gained or lost as per the Swiss Perfect pairings programme. First Team Anderson +82 Nathan Anderson, Michael Davidovici, Sean Karita and Dion Sampson ($400) Time controls used were 40 mins plus 30 secs a move from the start (Fischer). This proved quite popular with many players. There were several long games of three hours plus and the tournament was very competitive. The downside was that it was impossible to predict round times or finish off play for the day, as a few games reached 100 plus moves. It is therefore hard to complete a weekend tournament, especially one with seven rounds. ACF COUNCIL MEETING The quarterly meeting was held last Monday by phone hook-up. The national conference will be held as usual during the Australian Championships on Sunday 6 January 2002. Time controls agreed for both the Australian Championships and Australian Juniors were 90 mins a side plus 30 seconds a move. CORRESPONDENCE Dear Graeme, I believe the most important decision made at the FIDE Congress was that, for events commencing on or after 1 July 2002, the Rating List will be extended down to 1801. FIDE's intention is to go down to 1001 eventually. They accepted my recommendation this be done piecemeal. This will help preserve the integrity of bona fide Rating System and be easier administratively.
