QUEENSLAND UNIVERSITY OF
TECHNOLOGY
A few days ago I enjoyed joining Prof Anthony Maeder
and Dr Vinod Chandran
for morning tea at QUT and was
presented with a cheque for $8,000 as sponsorship for 10 DGT
Boards/Timers.
The ACF is most grateful to QUT for their generosity which will
enable the
ACF and participating states to provide regular internet chess content.
GOLD COAST
OPEN
107 players competed in the Gold Coast
Open this weekend. There was a four
way tie for first between IM
Stephen Solomon, IM Gary Lane, IM Zong Yuan
Zhao and Ian
Rout. Solomon emerged from a series of lightning play offs to
win
the title which he had previously won in 1993 and 1997. Number one
seed
Ian Rogers, who has been visiting the Gold Coast each
June since 1994, was
held to a draw with the white pieces by Zhao and in the
last round was
defeated by Lane.

This is the 9th consecutive year in which the Suncoast Chess Club
has held a
Grand Prix weekender in Noosa.
The Noosa Bicentennial Centre is
regarded by Grandmaster Ian Rogers as one
of the best chess venues
in
Australia and Noosa itself is hard to beat as a year-round
holiday
destination whether it be for a weekend
break from the hustle and
bustle of the city or for that well-earned 2-week
holiday with a friend or
the family.
This event regularly attracts over 70 players and is certainly one of
the
more popular tournaments on the
Australian Chess calendar. For more

BUNBURY CHESS CLUB - ALAN
PHILLIPS
Bunbury Chess Club in Bunbury Western Australia recently completed its
2001
Club Championship Tournament. It was an eight-round Swiss with
fourteen
players, including five juniors. The tournament resulted in Club
Champion
Julian Painter retaining his crown with an unbeaten
run. Notable in the
result was an excellent return of 4/4 by six-years-old
Michael Selby,
including a win over the Club's No. 3
Thomas Heidt [rating 1695]. This
giant-killer
who has only been playing for a couple of years is set for an
excellent chess
future. The final result: Open - 1st Julian Painter 8/0, 2nd
Thomas Heidt
6/2, equal 3rd David Pike, Phillip Larsen and George
Draganits
5/3; Under 1500 Division - equal 1st Cecil
Hopwood and John Murie 5/3,
equal 3rd John
Keppler and Alan Phillips 4/4, Peter
Selby [Senior] 1/7;
Junior Division - 1st Michael
Selby 4/4, equal 2nd Peter Selby [Junior]
and
Cameron Pike 2/6, Phillip Wych 0/8. The
tournament was held with good
sportsmanship all round and DOP Alan
Phillips reported only two absences in
the eight-week event.
This club is seeing the welcome return of juniors to its ranks, and
high
school chess is also starting to take off in the Bunbury area.
Recently
seventeen high schoolers took part in an inter-school event; the
first of
many to come. Moves are also afoot to start a Junior Club in Bunbury
to help
foster the game and give coaching to the many children who
play.
TERTIARY INSTITUTES CHESS CHALLENGE -
ANDREW GREENWOOD
The ANU chess team for Singapore departs on Wednesday for the 2001
Global
Tertiary Institutes Chess Challenge at Nanyang Technological
University.
Adrian Scott, who was originally named on the team, had to
pull out a few
weeks ago at short notice. Lee Forace
has replaced him and his
participation as a replacement team member has been
approved by the
organisers (this was partly because of the circumstances
regarding the
original withdrawal of Adrian). So the team stands
at:
Andrew Greenwood
Tom McCoy
Lee Forace
Nye
Griffiths
The tournament schedule is as follows:
Round 1: 30 June
Round 2: 1 July
Rounds 3&4: 2 July
Rounds
5&6: 3 July
Round 7: 4 July
Prize list:
1st Prize: S$ 3000.00
