2001 AUSTRALIAN UNIVERSITIES TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP

I appeal to everyone involved in Australian chess to help Allan Richards
publicise this important new event to all universities.

This years competition is going to be run under the Australian University
Games as part of their cultural program. As well as being part of a great
event, this will increase the festive spirit of the tournament, with many
social events to attend and people to get to know:

The Festival:

An Australian University Games Cultural and Arts Festival will be held for
the first time in conjunction with the 2001 Australian University Games.
This event is a joint initiative by the Australian University Games and the
University of Sydney Union to integrate existing university cultural activities, currently
being held in isolation, into the University Games program. The event will
showcase Australia's premier artistic talent in a weeklong program of
musical, intellectual, artistic and cultural events. The cultural program is
expected to attract an additional 1500 students and the wider community into
Sydney on top of the 6500 university athletes in Sydney to participate in
the Games. The festival will be held predominantly on-campus at The
University of Sydney.

The week-long activities will be integrated into the Games Program to
maximise attendances to the festival. While the cultural program is a trial
in 2001, the anticipated success of the event is expected to ensure that it
becomes a significant part of the Australian University Games Program in
future years. The 2001 Australian University Games Cultural and Arts
Festival aims to compliment the Games by presenting a spectacular national
forum for students, tertiary & secondary, across Australia to participate
and perform in.

ACF SERVICES

Swiss Perfect: It now appears that Swiss Perfect is being used very widely
right around Australia. This is certainly helping the ratings officers with
their duties and I believe will have many other benefits in due course. The
NSW President, Robert Keast, has a laptop computer with Swiss Perfect
already loaded available for borrowing by Sydney tournament organisers. As
Swiss Perfect will operate perfectly well on fairly old computers, several
people are purchasing second hand laptops for as little as $200-$400 mainly
for the efficient running of tournaments using Swiss Perfect. The ACF is
still offering free Swiss Perfect licences to all clubs and states in
Australia. Contact Graeme Gardiner graemeg@bigpond.net.au

Insurance: All clubs and states are invited to take advantage of extremely
cheap rates for Public Liability insurance which have been negotiated by the
ACF. Contact Graeme Gardiner graemeg@bigpond.net.au

Webpages: All clubs and states can save a good deal of money by using the
ACF's server and hanging their pages off the ACF site. This is a free
service. Contact Paul Broekhuyse broekhuysep@hotmail.com

Investment of funds: The ACF is trying to coordinate the investment of funds
at favourable rates by combining funds from clubs and states. If a total of
(say) $50,000 or $100,000 can be invested, then all participants will be
able to earn a higher rate of interest. If your club or state may have
surplus funds available for investment in a term deposit or cash management
account or similar, please let me know Graeme Gardiner graemeg@bigpond.net.au
