IN THIS ISSUE

Oceanic Zonal, ACF Tournament Coordinator required, News on Queensland Women's chess, PM to Visit Gold Coast Primary Schools Chess Championship, 2001 Grand Prix, Darling Downs Open, Latest Grand Prix scores after four tournaments, Ballarat Begonia Open, 2001 Tasmanian Championships, Hervey Bay Open, The 2001 University of Queensland Chess Challenge, Chess in Egypt.

OCEANIC ZONAL

Early response to the Oceanic Zonal has been most encouraging with 30+ enquiries, including 8 from women.

Would those leading players wishing to be considered as Australia's seeds kindly email ROBERT JAMIESON auschess@iaccess.com.au as a matter of urgency and certainly no later that this Friday 23 March.

Enquiries regarding the zonal should be directed to myself <ggardiner@somerset.qld.edu.au> or phone 07 5530 3777 (W) 07 5530 5794 (H). I have mailed out a number of entry forms but there are many FIDE rated players in Australia and the Oceania region for whom I do not have addresses.

ACF TOURNAMENT COORDINATOR REQUIRED

The only ACF position which is vacant at present is that of Tournament Coordinator. This role broadly involves taking bids for official ACF events, making sure that the bids comply with the ACF Handbook and making sure that a post event report is received also in accordance with the ACF Handbook. I would be interested to hear from anyone who feels that they would like to undertake this task.

NEWS ON QUEENSLAND WOMEN'S CHESS - RUSSELL MOWLES

I would like to advise of a new chess website <www.mowleschess.com>. The aim of the website is to promote Women's and Girl's chess in Queensland as well as provide a history of Queensland Women's and Girl's chess including state tournament results, interstate records, games, player profiles etc. In addition the site will provide Saint Stephen's College (Coomera, Gold Coast) and the Coomera Junior Chess Club with a facility to view the years programme, tournament results, history and games. Approximately 40 pages have been completed and I anticipate over 120 pages in total, once all the data has been compiled and uploaded.

PM TO VISIT GOLD COAST PRIMARY SCHOOLS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS

I recently spent an hour or so with ACF Patron Tim Fischer when I picked him up and dropped him off at Coolangatta Airport for the Somerset Literature
Festival. He gave me some useful advice including how to get a one pager in front of the Prime Minister when he visits the Gold Coast Primary Chess Championships this Wednesday. This is purely coincidental as the PM will be addressing a community gathering at the Robina Town Centre Community Hall which had already been pre-booked by the Gold Coast Chess Club. I expect to get a couple of minutes with the PM (if I'm lucky).

2001 GRAND PRIX

Please note once again that the new Grand Prix Supervisor is NORM BRAYBROOKE <chessnut@windsor.net.au>. I'm sure that he would love to hear about new events. Norm's webpage is at: http://crcchess.topcities.com/GP2001.htm. We continue to appeal to chess organisers in Victoria and WA to give players in those states the opportunity to earn Grand Prix points.

BALLARAT BEGONIA OPEN - BAS VAN RIEL

He has done it again..! GM DARRYL JOHANSEN won the Ballarat Begonia long weekender for the 12th time. Very convincingly, he scored 6.5/7 allowing only a draw in the last round against joint runner-up IGOR BJELOBRK.

Although we were down on numbers (79) compared to last year, the top was very strong with 9 players above a 2000 rating including 3 (grand-) masters.

Again, the tournament proved very popular amongst the juniors.

In the third round proceedings were hotting up with a crushing win of Bjelobrk over Baron. The 4th round saw the match between defending champion, MIRKO RUJEVIC and Johansen, decided in favour of the latter, and a win by Bjelobrk over GUY WEST, who incidentally had a bad run. By round 5, most of the favourites had lost some (half) points with STEWART BOOTH in second spot. But he too was also rolled by Johansen in round 6, and a group including Bjelobrk, RUJEVIC, Booth, BARON, SANDLER, and ANDERSON were fighting for the runner-up prices. This was shared at the end by Bjelobrk, Rujevic (who won from Sandler in a tense battle), and Baron who beat Booth in a long, final game. CHRIS FENWICK had a good tournament and finished 5th on 5.5 points.

The B-group was won by local hero P. COOK (5), the C-group equally by D.SCHEPISI, A. GHOBRIAL and Z. LOJANICA (on 4) First prize of the D-group was equally split between the juniors D. LINDBERG and S. FERRIS.
