ACF Bulletin No. 107 - 11 March 2001

IN THIS ISSUE

Oceanic Zonal, National University Teams Competition, ACF Grand Prix 2001,
The Italo-Australian Club 39th Doeberl Cup, The Sydney 2001 Easter Cup

OCEANIC ZONAL

Arrangements have been finalised to stage the zonal at the Radisson Resort,
Palm Meadows, Gold Coast from Sunday 22 April to Friday 27 April 2001. The
new FIDE time controls will be used which allows the event to be completed
in six days. This will make the event more accessible to those who can only
afford to take one week off work. The official organiser is Graeme Gardiner
on behalf of the Australian Chess Federation.

The Open event will be run as a swiss tournament. In the time available I
have not been able to source a sponsor and therefore a small 'round robin'
would not be financially viable.

Full details are as follows:

Open 9 round swiss (18 to 30 players)
Women 10 player round robin (or 6 player double round robin)

Sunday 22 April Round 1 - 10am Round 2 - 5pm

number of titles which can be awarded without the prior approval of the
joint chairmen of the Titles Commission is IM 1, FM 2.

The winning male and female qualify for participation in the relevant World
Championship Cycle events.

Chief Arbiter: Gary Bekker Assistant Arbiter: Charles Zworestine.

It is hoped to transmit all games live to the internet.

NATIONAL UNIVERSITY TEAMS COMPETITION

There have been some big steps made towards the organisation of an
Australian University Chess Championship in the last couple of weeks. The
biggest problem left is getting teams to attend. So if you know the e-mails
of any chess players at university, or anybody who could be helpful in
this regard please e-mail Allan Richards at: inter_uni_comp@hotmail.com

Would tournament organisers please note that it is imperative that you get
results into Norm Braybrooke as soon as you have held your event. Both Norm
and his predecessor Ingrid Thompson have been caused an unnecessarily large
amount of work in repeatedly chasing very late results.

Please support the South West Open being held in Bunbury on the weekend of
17/18 March. Please note once again that the new Grand Prix Supervisor is
NORM BRAYBROOKE <chessnut@windsor.net.au>. I'm sure that he would love to
hear from new events. Norm's webpage is at:
