Just a brief, pre-Xmas  Bulletin.    Graeme Gardiner is now back in Australia after an interesting overseas trip which included the Chess Olympiad and a visit to the USCF.   He will give us a full report in the next bulletin (about 2nd January).
CORRESPONDENCE

Dear Officer,

We are representatives of the Chess Club of the Nanyang Technological
University of Singapore. This coming June 2001, we are organizing the Global
Youth Tertiary Institutes Chess Challenge (GYTICC) 2001.

We would like to invite teams from universities as well as other tertiary
institutes from around the world to participate in this tournament.

Your assistance is greatly appreciated. We wish to request for your help in
inviting teams from Australian universities. This can be done in two ways.
Either you could forward this email as well as the accompanying attachment
files to universities. Or you could email us the list of contacts that we
can approach.

Once again, thank you.

Australian Centenary of Federation Chess Festival
2001 Icon-Australian Open
28 December 2000 - 9 January 2001
Rydges Lakeside Canberra
ACT

Are there any Sydney players coming down for the Australian Open who could
assist with lifts for some titled overseas players who are coming into
Sydney airport?

This will obviously depend on the day people are coming down. At present, I
need people to help on the following days:

- GM Kunte (India), arriving 7:50PM on 26th December - can anyone pick up
from the airport and offer accommodation for one night and then travel down
the next day? Or, is anyone leaving that night at the time needed?

- IM Pisk (Czech) - Arriving 7:10AM 28th December. Is there anyone who
could pick up from the airport and go straight on to Canberra. This is the
day of the tournament.

- IM Heidenfeld (Ireland) - Arriving late afternoon on 27th. Is anyone
travelling on that evening who can pick up from airport?

- Also, Danish player Mortensen is looking for a car lift on the 27th from
Sydney but not from the airport necessarily.

Sorry to ask, but these players had trouble getting transfer flights
because of domestic demand.

People who are able to help should contact me urgently:

Regards, Andrew Greenwood

LATEST INFO

Things are really shaping up for a wonderful series of events.  Entries to
date for all of the events at Rydges Lakeside total over 200.  There are
currently  about 100 early entrants in the Icon-Australian Open, 40 in the
U/1600 Minor, 30 in the U/2000 Repechage and around 35 in the Open Rapid
and Open Lightning events.

For those not wanting to have the special experience of playing in the
Open, you should consider the shorter Minor (28-31 Dec) and U/2000 (2-7
Jan) events. There is great prize-money available for the club strength
player.  Over $20,000 in prizes will be handed out during the festival.  At
least $11,300 in prizes for the Open in many divisions, $2,500 the Minor,
$2,900 in the Repechage  and over $4,000 in the Australian Juniors.  There
is something for players of all standards.  Go to the web site for the full
prize list.  Open players can also play in the U/2000 "second-chance" event.

IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO ENTER!

I would make an appeal to those still thinking of participating to get your
paid entries in now.  At this stage, faxed entries and direct banking would
be quicker to avoid any mail delays over the Christmas period.  Entry form
can be downloaded from the website if you do not have it.  Those players
not entered yet arriving before 11AM on the day must contact the organisers
in advance.

Titled player update: Vladimir Feldman and his wife Irina have both
withdrawn from the tournament.  The organisers have accepted their reasons
given - namely, due to poor health.  However, if it is any consolation, I
can confirm that their recovery will be swift and timely for them to attend
the Australian Junior Championships on January 11, so people might catch up
with them there instead.

The confirmed player list stands at:

International Grandmasters:

GM IAN ROGERS (AUSTRALIA 2558)
GM ABHIJIT KUNTE (INDIA 2556)
GM ALEXANDER VOLZHIN (RUSSIA 2556)
GM DARRYL JOHANSEN (AUSTRALIA 2505)

IM WALAA SARWAT (EGYPT 2392)
IM MARK HEIDENFELD (IRELAND 2375)
IM GUY WEST (AUSTRALIA 2372)
IM MOHAMED EZAT (EGYPT 2348)
IM ZONG-YUAN ZHAO (AUSTRALIA 2341)
IM DAVID SMERDON (AUSTRALIA 2315)

Other visiting and titled players:

KAMAL EL AMARY (EGYPT 2113)
WIM CRISTINE MARIANO (PHILIPPINES 2093)
HENRIK MORTENSEN (DENMARK 2089)
WIM LAURA MOYLAN (AUSTRALIA 2076)

There is still a plentiful supply of accommodation.

- Fenner Hall still has many single rooms available for $120/week for
adults and $95/week for students.  Ring 02-6279-9000 to book and request
the Centenary Chess Festival budget rate!

- Rydges Lakeside still has rooms available, but you will have to book
quickly to get a room.  The rate is $130/night including full buffet
breakfast.  Ring 02-6247-6244 to reserve your room and request the special
rate.
