ACF Bulletin No. 85 - 2 October 2000 Due to pressure of work, this is a fairly short bulletin. There will probably be a more informative bulletin issued next Sunday. ********** CHESS PROMOTION IN THE ATHLETES' OLYMPIC VILLAGE This event was arranged by FIDE some three months ago. I think it is fair to say that FIDE would have been struggling to put this on without the help of a few ACF people. I would like to thank MANUEL WEEKS and the NSW people who helped with transport and other matters, and in particular GARY BEKKER who went well beyond the call of duty in ensuring that the event ran smoothly from both a technical point of view and logistical matters, including transport. The late arrival of ALEXEI SHIROV, who endured a marathon 39 hour journey due to being offloaded from a flight from Europe, did not unduly affect the promotion. In fact we got started just a few minutes late and Shirov had the better of two hard fought draws with VISHY ANAND. ZONG YUAN ZHAO, a late replacement for WGM ALEXANDRA KOSTENJUK, carried out a very good simul which drew several interested athletes and others, both playing and watching. The Australian news media was a little thin on the ground apart from two journalists from the Australian and our chess columnists. TV crews from India and the BBC showed considerable interest as well as one of Spain's leading journalists, Leon Garcia. Speeches were made by KIRSAN ILYUMZHINOV (President of FIDE) and MARK HODLER, the IOC member responsible for the winter Olympics. Mark did give some cause for optimism that he was trying to get both chess and bridge into the winter Olympics. IOC Director of Sports, Gilbert Felli, also attended. In addition to Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, FIDE people who attended were DAVID JARRETT (Treasurer) and his wife VALENTINA, PT UMMER KOYA (Vice President), FLORENCIO CAMPOMANES and his wife, POLINA TSEDINOVA (Interpreter), EMMANUEL OMUKU (Executive Director), PETER KOSTELOV and SERGEY DONCHENKO (Technical Assistants). I understand that board member NOUREDDINE TABBANE and his wife arrived the next day. The party was completed by our chess stars, Alexei Shirov, Vishy Anand and his wife Aruna. The day following the chess promotion, we attended an official reception at Slovenia House where the 2002 Chess Olympiad, to be held in Bled, Slovenia, was launched. Later in the week Alexei Shirov gave a talk at the St George Leagues Club and GM NONA GAPRINDASHVILI gave a simul at the North Sydney Leagues Club. Nona, who I understand was the first female to achieve the open GM title, was with the Georgian Olympic delegation and attended the chess promotion at the Athletes Village. ********** GRAND PRIX Points based on best 5 scores Open 106 Players with points 1 Rogers, Ian NSW 91.5 2 Johansen, Darryl VIC 64.5 3 Solomon, Stephen QLD 54.9 4 Wohl, Alex QLD 49.5 5 Myers, John QLD 39.4 6 Rujevic, Mirko VIC 32 7 Reilly, Tim NSW 30.5 8 Zhao, Zong-Yuan NSW 28 9 Stead, Kerry NSW 26.83 10 Martin, Benjamin OS 28.2 11 Hornung, Michael TAS 25.33 U/2000 118 Players with points 1 Myers, John QLD 64.33 2 Rej, Tomek NSW 42.79 3 Coutts, Tama NSW 41.77 4 Zhao, Zong-Yuan NSW 41.56 5 Sheldrick, Kevin SA 36 6 Hornung, Michael TAS 27.33 7 Stead, Kerry NSW 26.83 8 Edwards, Jacob QLD 22.5 9 Murray, Bruce NSW 22.33 10 Bolens, Jonny NSW 21.86 11 Partisi, Dimitry VIC 21.3 11 Lojanica, Milenko VIC 21.3 U/1600 142 Players with points 1 Bowen, Leon VIC 37.5 2 Guthrie, Aaron SA 27.66 3 Greenwood, Norm NSW 26.65 4 Lip, Catherine NSW 26.12 5 Lea, Tom TAS 25.16 6 Carey, Doug NSW 24.5 7 Darvall, Anthony QLD 23.5 8 Wongwichit, Phachara QLD 22.45 9 Horwood, Melba QLD 21.12 10 Goodwin, Bob QLD 20.83 11 Mejzini, Jack NSW 20 11 Yang, Song SA 20 Unrated 88 Players with points 1 Snell, Bryce QLD 36 2 Horwood, Paul QLD 34.75 3 Wedding, Robin SA 28 4 Prilleltensky, Matan VIC 26.5 5 Varela, Peter NSW 22.5 5 Stojic, Dusan ACT 22.5 5 Stojic, Svetozar ACT 22.5 6 Lewin, Peter NSW 21.33 7 Gill, Geoffrey VIC 20 7 Rau, Christian ACT 20 8 Richards, David QLD 17.5 8 Takos, Adam SA 17.5 8 Palit, Vikram VIC 17.5 8 Edwards, Jon QLD 17.5 Junior 86 Players with points 1 Zhao, Zong-Yuan NSW 88.16 2 Xie, George NSW 59.66 3 Rej, Tomek NSW 50.66 4 Smerdon, David QLD 45.16 5 Chow, Samuel VIC 38.5 6 Murray, Luke QLD 38.33 7 Davidovici, Michael QLD 37 8 Lip, Michael NSW 31.5 9 Guthrie, Aaron SA 30.66 10 Skoric, Anthony QLD 22.91 11 Darvall, Anthony QLD 22.5 11 Varela, Peter NSW 22.5 Female 44 Players with points 1 Horwood, Melba QLD 61.5 2 Lip, Catherine NSW 56 3 Koshnitsky, Ngan SA 51.5 4 Szuveges, Narelle VIC 48.5 5 Jovanovic, Marija ACT 41 5 Sharamova, Eugenia NSW 41 6 Lee, Michelle VIC 33 7 Jones, Nancy NSW 29 7 Moylan, Laura ACT 29 8 Martin, Janice TAS 24 8 Steer, Joanne NSW 24 8 Zivanovic, Andjelija VIC 24 Tournaments Included - Newcastle Open Taree RSL Summer Open Labour Day Open South West Open Hervey Bay Open Ballarat Bergonia Open Darling Downs Open Doeberl Cup 35th Peninsula Open Hobson's Bay Open Adelaide Cup NSWCA May W/E Tasmanian Championship Queen's Birthday Open (SA) NSWCA Koshnitsky Mem'l Taree RSL Open Gold Coast Open Noosa Open ANU Open Mackay Open Basta Shield (Open results only at this stage due to computer crash) Adelaide Checkmate Weekender Australian Rapid Play Championships Whale Open Gold Coast Classic Tournament Results Not Included - VIC Open (awaiting results - possible computer crash problems) Nth Queensland Open NSWCA Open (August) Many thanks again to Ingrid Thompson who is doing a stirling job in this demanding role of maintaining the records.
