ACF Bulletin No. 80 - 27 August 2000 INSURANCE DEAL FOR STATES AND CLUBS I'm pleased to advise that the ACF has taken out a special insurance policy that not only covers the ACF but also allows any state or club that wishes to be added on at a very reasonable cost. The policy covers any type of ACF, state or club event including meetings, social days, tournaments, shopping centre events etc. The policy has been issued through CHRIS ZUCCALA, Vicwide Insurance Brokers with the following details: Public and Products Liability Insurance Limits of Indemnity: Public Liability $10,000,000 any one occurrence Products Liability $10,000,000 any one period of insurance Tenants Fire Liability $10,000,000 any one occurrence Premium: ACF $484 States $303 each Clubs with 100 or more members $242 per club Clubs with 50 to less than 100 members $182 per club Clubs with less than 50 members $121 per club Territorial Limits: Anywhere in Australia Excess: $250 for property damage claims only Insurer: Lumley General Insurance The above premiums include all charges (incl GST and Brokers Fee) All clubs, whether incorporated or not, would be most unwise not to have this kind of insurance. These days a minimum level of insurance is $5,000,000. I'm advised that $1,000,000 to $2,000,000 would be totally inadequate. To take advantage of this special offer, all you need to do is email NORM GREENWOOD with the following details: Name of club, number of current members, main meeting venue (if any), incorporated or unincorporated, any previous liability incidents, contact name/address/phone/fax/email, interested parties to be noted on policy (if any). You will then be contacted directly by the insurer, Chris Zuccala, who will advise you of the pro rata premium to pay to the common renewal date (31 August). ********** NATIONAL JUNIOR COORDINATOR I'm sad to say that after several years of outstanding service to the development of elite junior chess in Australia, MANUEL WEEKS is standing down. With the heavy voluntary workload required to carry out this position effectively, I can quite understand Manuel's need for a break. There is a strong possibility that Manuel will be spending a large part of next year in Spain. I very much hope that this will only be a temporary departure from Australian chess because Manuel has so much to offer. He has been a key part of the 'engine room' of Australian chess. The ACF is keen to hear from individuals who would like to take over the position of national junior coordinator. The main requirements for the position are: * To organise selections for World and Asian junior individual and team events. * To coordinate coaching and training of elite juniors around Australia. * To travel with the team to the World Junior Championships (this is preferred but not essential). Please email me ggardiner@somerset.qld.edu.au by Saturday 2 September if you are interested. The ACF Executive will appoint a replacement as soon as possible. ********** SYDNEY OLYMPICS PROMOTION FIDE and the ACF have organised a world-class rapid play and simultaneous exhibition during the Sydney Olympics. Events will be held at the Sydney Olympic Village on Monday 25th September and at the Buran Space Shuttle in Darling Harbour on Tuesday 26th September. Grandmasters A. Shirov, V. Anand, D. Johansen and A. Konsteniuk, will be involved in the events. The Olympic Village event will be a black tie, invitation only, function. However, the second day of activities at Darling Harbour will be open to the public. Games, on both days, commence at 6pm local Sydney time and selected games will be broadcast live to the internet via the FIDE webpage http://www.fide.com. ********** KOSHNITSKY BEAUTY PRIZE The winner of the Evelyn Koshnitsky Beauty Prize worth $500 for the most beautiful combination played during the Garry Koshnitsky Memorial Festival is GM Ian Rogers for his win against Zong Yuan Zhao in the Parkroyal International. I have valued Mike's advice in my time as ACF President and I'm sure he will be missed. Hopefully, he will still be heavily involved in chess. FRED MARIS is acting President until a replacement is appointed. ********** ELECTION OF NEW ACF EXECUTIVE A new ACF executive will be elected at the national conference to be held in Canberra on 7 January. The ACF Constitution requires 120 days notice of nominations for the new executive. According to my calculations this means nominations need to be into me by Saturday 9 September. Please feel free to send in a nomination for the entire executive (President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer) or just for one position if you are available to be included on someone else's ticket. ********** OLYMPIAD SELECTION COMMITTEE I was remiss in the last bulletin in not thanking the members of the selection committee. On behalf of the Australian chess community, I would like to offer my most sincere thanks for carrying out this onerous task. It is a huge responsibilty and requires a great deal of diligence. The purpose of this article is not to describe the spectacular scenery, the fantastic icebergs, or the teeming wildlife, but to share some memorable experiences I had during the voyage. Knowing that the ship's crew would be Russian and there would be spare time aplenty at sea between landings, I took a chess set and board in my luggage. At the welcome cocktail party in the Polar Bar on the first evening at sea, I introduced myself to Captain Alexey Zakalashnyuk and offered myself for chess combat with any member of his crew who felt like a game or two whilst off duty. A day or so later there was a knock on my cabin door, and the electrical engineer from Murmansk accepted my offer. Surprisingly he was the only crew member who did so, and he had not played since secondary school, but his love and knowledge of the game had remained with him. During the voyage we played many enjoyable games over many hours in the Dining Room, usually under the watchful eye of the Russian cook. During most of this time there was zero visibility outside because of thick fog, snow, sleet or darkness. Although my opponent spoke only a few words in English, we were able to "break the ice" and open a friendly channel of communication through our chess games. One interesting feature of my opponent's games was his invariable practice of playing both Rook pawns forward one square early in the opening, to prevent my Bishops from pinning his Knights. When I pointed out that such pawn moves delayed the rapid development of his centre, he explained that everybody at school had been taught to play like that! My most southerly landing was at the Ukrainian Antarctic Base, Vernadskiy, right on the Circle. We went in by Zodiac through drift-ice and swirling snow flurries, watched by leopard seals and crab-eater seals lounging on ice rafts. The Ukrainian scientists were studying global warming with out-of-date equipment purchased from Britain as part of what was formerly its Faraday Base. They welcomed our visit with home made vodka and a guided tour of the base. Somehow or other, I found myself taking on the local Ukrainian chess champion at the hand-made inlaid chess table in the bar, dangerously situated beneath a dart board. Fortunately, darts were put on hold. My opponent was from Kiev, and was very much stronger than the electrical engineer. We played 5 games over several hours, watched by all the Base members and visitors from the "Molchanov". The home-made vodka flowed freely. National pride was at stake! The end result was 2½-2½. Pride on both sides was saved. I enquired whether my opponent had played Club Chess in Kiev. "Street club" was his reply. This is similar to Hyde Park Chess in Sydney, on tables under the trees in the squares and meeting places in Kiev. And for money! I then understood why Kiev produced stronger chess players than Murmansk. My chess experiences in the Antarctic brought home to me what a wonderful international language chess is. ********** Very best wishes to all Graeme Gardiner ------------------------------------------- Graeme Gardiner President, Australian Chess Federation C/- Somerset College, Somerset Drive, Mudgeeraba Q 4213 Phone 07 5530 3777 (w) 07 5530 5794 (h) Fax 07 5525 2676 (w) Email: ggardiner@somerset.qld.edu.au http://www.auschess.org.au Chess - the clever sport!
