ACF Bulletin No. 79 - 22 August 2000 Many thanks to ROBERT JAMIESON for putting out the bulletin in my absence last week. He has advised me of a correction to the Adelaide Checkmate weekender scores: 6.5/7 I.Rogers 6.0 D.Johansen 5.5 S.Yang, S.Solomon 5.0 G.Lane, M.Chapman, S.Zaric, K.Skeldric, E.Teichman etc. (71 players) ********** OLYMPIAD TEAMS MEN'S Captain: Andrew Allen 1. Ian Rogers 2. Darryl Johansen 3. Alex Wohl 4. Michael Gluzman 5. Guy West 6. John-Paul Wallace 1st reserve: Zong Yuan Zhao 2nd reserve Leonid Sandler (There was an error in the original points calculation which incorrectly placed Vladimir Feldman ahead of Leonid Sandler in the original announcement) WOMEN'S Captain: Jason Lyons 1. Irina Berezina-Feldman 2. Ngan Phan-Koshnitsky 3. Biljana Dekic 4. Laura Moylan 1st reserve: Edyta Rozycki 2nd reserve: Natalie Mills Three players who missed selection have appealed to the ACF Executive over their non selection. The ACF Executive has ruled that all selection procedures as outlined in the constitution and bye-laws have been correctly followed. ANDREW ALLEN advises that there is a site up for the Olympiad with some preliminary details: http://www.istanbulchessolympiad.com/ ********** OLYMPIAD APPEAL Many thanks to all those who have supported the Olympiad Appeal both at state and national level. Please dig deep and show your support for our national team and send your donation to the ACF Treasurer NORM GREENWOOD, Unit 15, Horizon Towers, 208 Pacific Highway, Hornsby NSW 2077. Alternatively please advise of your pledge to me at ********** TRIP AROUND AUSTRALIA It was very good to talk with so many people on the round Australia trip. Many thanks to the state presidents for organising the meetings and to the Partis, Bekker, Poulton and Rogers families for putting up with Wendy and me. I'm hopeful that the Northern Territory will soon become the 8th state/territory to affiliate with the ACF. The proposed first stage of the financial restructure of Australian chess seems to be coming together at last although it still needs to be approved by the sub-committee and ACF Council. The biggest turnout was in Brisbane where over 40 turned out for a one day seminar which was very well put together by CRAIG ROSE and featured, among several other items, a very good presentation on Swiss Perfect by ROBERT ROZYCKI. For me, the highlight of the trip was the finale of the Garry Koshnitsky Memorial Festival in Adelaide. Checkmate Tournament organiser, ROLY EIME, summed up the series in the tournament bulletin as follows: Garry Koshnitsky 1907-1999 - Garry's contribution to Australian chess was unique in many ways - as a player (both over the board and correspondence) and as an administrator, talent spotter and mentor. He also had the great judgement to marry Evelyn and form one of the greatest partnerships known. The series of tournaments held round Australia this year have given all Australian chess players a chance to pay homage to his memory and to celebrate it in a way Garry would have approved - to get together and play great chess. Evelyn has provided the energy and know-how to conclude the series in fine style in the city she and Garry made their home for 40 years. ********** SYDNEY OLYMPICS PROMOTION The Sydney Olympics promotion seems to be coming together. Many thanks to GARY BEKKER and MANUEL WEEKS for giving up a great deal of time to work with the FIDE organiser PETER KOSTELOV, the SOCOG Venue Manager BRIAN VAN DEN HOGEN and the FIDE PR Company, Octagon on the logistical side of the event. At this stage, whilst the precise details have yet to be finalised, it looks like there will be a chess promotion involving VISHY ANAND, ALEXEI SHIROV, DARRYL JOHANSEN and media identities on Monday/Tuesday 25/26 September at the Olympic Village. Games are likely to be relayed direct to the FIDE website. ********** 2001 AUSTRALIAN CENTENARY OPEN/JUNIOR The organisation of the 2001 Australian Open and Junior is progressing well. Some preliminary information has been distributed to weekend tournaments. There will be an advertisement in the September edition of Australian Chess Forum. It is planned that early entries for the Open will close in early December. Early entry is $120 adult and $96 concession (junior, unwaged and over 60 years). Credit card phone/mailed payment will also be available - details to come. The Open will be FIDE-rated and also a Class-3 ACF Grand Prix event - the concluding event for this year's excellent tournament circuit. The Open will have a minimum prize fund of over $10,000, with a $3,000 first prize. Also bear in mind that two minor events (Australian Minor and Repechage) will run alongside the Open to make it easier for people to compete over a smaller number of days if work commitments are too great for play in the longer Open. The Australian Minor (U/1600 Swiss) will run between 28-31 December with mainly two rounds per day. The Australian Repechage (U/2000 Swiss) will run between 2-7 January with one morning round per day, finishing before the 2:00pm Open round start. U/2000 Open players will also be able to compete in this minor event. Early entry fees for these events are only $50 adult and $40 concession. These events will have generous prizes and offer good opportunities for club-strength players to travel to Canberra with a good chance of winning a prize. Entries can be sent to ACTCA Inc, PO Box 470, Erindale Centre, ACT 2903. Also, a text-only version of the website (http://www.auschess.org.au/centenary) is under construction for those wanting quicker access to the information. The list of accommodation options will be distributed with the tournament brochure and entry form to be distributed with Australian Chess Forum. A list of confirmed entries will soon be published after these have been finalised. The prize lists will also be notified again through the bulletin and also on the website and entry forms. Accommodation Thanks to EVELYN FITZPATRICK, there is now a comprehensive list of accommodation options for the 2001 Australian Open and Juniors. He has had the materials carbon dated by the Australian Nuclear Science Organisation Physics Division at 33,200 years and Sydney University are currently trying to identify the materials. He has compared the replica set with the original in the British Museum. David won the Captain's Trophy at the Darwin Chess Club in 1964 which was then the unofficial Northern Territory Championship. These days he restricts his chess to playing on the Internet Chess Club. If you think you may be able to help David, please phone him on 02 6679 3151. ********** CORRESPONDENCE DR JONATHAN SARFATI (FM): I concur with Richard Thorne here. I would go further and say there is no place for pseudo-mathematical 'tie-break' systems/countbacks in either Swiss or Round Robin. Really, I can't see that any of them have any more merit than a toss of a coin. If there needs to be a single winner, e.g. for a trophy or a qualification place, then a lightning playoff is preferable to a 'tie-break'. At least here, the prize is decided by some form of chess (?), rather than fancy maths underlined by dubious assumptions. Finally, there is *definitely* no place for using a countback to decide *prize money*, as happened recently in a Gold Coast tournament jointly won by David Smerdon and Craig Duxbury with 10.5/11, way ahead of everyone else. Smerdon was, in my opinion, unfairly done out of a share of 1st prize and the second prize money was much less. And the organiser's excuse 'we've always done it this way' just won't wash. By this 'reasoning', civilisation would never progress -- we can't use motorcars 'because we've always travelled by horse and buggy'. ********** Very best wishes to all.
