Ayris, S.Zaric, Song Yang, A.Goldsmith, R.Valenti etc. (20 players). The results of the Checkmate Weekender were: 6.5/7 I.Rogers 6 D.Johansen 5.5 Song Yang 5 S.Solomon 4.5 G.Lane, M.Chapman, S.Zaric, K.Skeldric, E.Teichman etc. (71 players) Another good result for Ian Rogers but junior Song Yang was probably the outstanding performance of the tournament. At the conclusion of the Koshnitsky Chess Festival in Adelaide there was a party attended by about 50 chess players which was in full swing when I rang for a report. Ian Rogers opened a huge bottle of champagne that was given to him when he achieved his first IM norm at Brisbane 1979. EVELYN KOSHNITSKY BEAUTY PRIZE $500 Just a reminder that Evelyn has donated $500 for the most beautiful game played in the Garry Koshnitsky Memorial Festival which commenced back on 7 June. Entries close on Sunday 20th August. The entry fee has been waived to encourage more entries. Get your entry in to the judge Robert Jamieson, email to:auschess@iaccess.com.au ********** AUSTRALIAN OPEN RAPID PLAY, MELBOURNE AUGUST 5/6. This event attracted a very strong field of around 110 players and was played at Deakin University in Burwood. Congratulations to David Cordover and Troy Edwards who did an excellent job in organising this event. David hopes to hold it again next year. Here are some examples of interesting positions from the tournament. D.Smerdon - C.Depasquale /8,8,1R5p,2p2pk1,2Pr4,5PK1,7P,8,/ Smerdon has been defending an unfavourable rook ending and took a chance to swap off rooks. Play continuedŠ 1 h4+ (Ian Rogers suggested 1 Rc6 Rxc4 2 f4+ Kh5 3 h3=) 1 ŠRxh4 2 Rg6+ Kxg6 3 Kxh4 f4 4 Kg4 h5+ 5 Kxf4 Kf6 6 Ke4 Kg5 7 Ke5 h4 8 f4+ Kg6 9 Ke6 Kg7 10 Ke7 h3 11 f5 h2 12 f6+ Kg6 13 f7 h1=Q 14 f8=Q Qe4+ 15 Kd6 Qxc4 16 Qe8+ Kg5 =. Did you see where Depasquale missed a win? (answer at the end). S.Solomon - L.Sandler /6Q1,4q3,1p2p3,p1p1k3,P1P2p2,1P3P2,4K3,8,/ This is an absolute Solo classic! Solo is defending a queen ending a pawn down when his opponent decides to construct a help mate in the middle of the board. 1Š Kd4?? 2 Qh8+ e5 3 Kd2! Qg5 4 Qh1 1-0 (The threat is Qa1 mate). A.Martin - D.Smerdon /2q4r,p2Rnkpp,1p3p2,8,Q2N4,8,PP3KPP,8,/ Smerdon has been in big trouble after a bad opening and Martin finds a very pretty check to finish him off. 1 Nc6 (this allows the pretty combination but objectively best was 1 Qb3+ Kf8 2 Rxa7 +-) Re8? (1ŠQxd7 2 Ne5+ fxe5 3 Qxd7 Rc8 =) 2 Rxe7+ Rxe7 3 Qc4+!! Re6 (if 3 Š Kf8 4 Qg8+!!) 4 Ne5+ fxe5 5 Qxc8 and White won. Answer: Depasquale could have won with 8ŠKh6!
