I would think this is something that could be decided on a state basis rather than a club basis. If states could provide this cover for their affiliated clubs, the state could then look at offering insurance cover to affiliated clubs who wish to have insurance cover. Eg, the state association could pay the $450 fee (or whatever it is) and then offer the cover to affiliated clubs for $50. The state may or may not make a loss/profit from such a venture but I believe it would be a good basis for covering the chess community with insurance. Clubs could either pay the levy or advise their state association in writing that they did not wish to have the insurance cover for their club. One spectator who trips over a chair at a tournament could potentially bankrupt a chess club without insurance. Litigation is becoming more common every day. Does the club then have any claim on ACF as an affiliated member of the parent body? I think the ACF should seriously investigate insurance and advise each state association of a state costing (total premium divided by the number of participating states/territories) for insurance to the chess community. I think it should be obligatory rather than optional for the states to be covered by insurance. GUY WEST: Thanks to Brian Jones for clarifying his position. I would maintain that one of the dangers of such editorials is shown however by his comment that I was not in his A team because of being inactive. In the three months prior to his editorial I had played 16 tournament games, losing only once, in the last round of the Vic Open, to the Rebel Tiger computer that won the event. I have also just played the first round of the Australian Masters (incidentally, defeating one of his selections, Zhong, in a silly game which I do not claim to mean anything.) This strong, eleven round tournament should, however, surely have a bearing on the Olympiad selection, but had not been played when Brian published his team. Results can take time to filter through to other states and only the selectors will be privy to all the relevant information. They should not be pressured one way or the other just before a selection. Brian's set of criteria for Olympiad selection is interesting, but is not current ACF policy as far as I am aware. The last time I heard anything, the policy was to finish as high as possible, using currently active players. If this has changed without me knowing I am happy to be corrected. One thing I see as important is that donors should know what the policy is, as if the Olympiad is to be regarded as a training ground for players with future promise, rather than the most important team event on the chess calendar, in which national reputation is the overriding consideration, it may affect their decision to donate, (either positively or negatively.) Donors are the lifeblood of our Olympiad effort, and deserve to be fully informed. Thanks to all the people who provided feedback on the 'ageism' issue. ********** Very best wishes to all Graeme Gardiner ------------------------------------------- Graeme Gardiner President, Australian Chess Federation C/- Somerset College, Somerset Drive, Mudgeeraba Q 4213 Phone 07 5530 3777 (w) 07 5530 5794 (h) Fax 07 5525 2676 (w) Email: ggardiner@somerset.qld.edu.au http://www.auschess.org.au Chess - the clever sport!
